Chris Jones and Katie Sherron take top billing at the return of the Pine Run

North of Tallahassee, Florida, Tall Timbers was founded as a place to shoot quail. Later, it became a research station dedicated to the study of the role of fire in land management, with a particular emphasis on how prescribed burning promoted quail population.

Athletics was not part of the origins. Neverthless, on Saturday morning, 5 October 2019, more htan a hundred runners made a twenty-kilometer tour of the hill forestland of Tall Timbers. It was Gulf Winds Track Club's 41st annual Pine Run 20K, and Chris Jones won the 12.4-mile cross-country race, running 1:24:34. Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the 20K, placing 16th overall in 1:37:40.

The Pine Run is the only time each year that runners are welcome on the trail of Tall Timbers. In 2018, the athletes didn't even get that opportunity, because the race had to be canceled due to storm damage from Hurricane Michael. That same cyclone brought the 2019 winner, Chris Jones, to the region.

"I recently moved to Tyndall to help with the hurricane efforts," said Jones. "I've been busy."

Mickey Moore & Bryce Parry

Jones was leading nearly from the 7:30 AM start of the 20K. During the first half of the Pine Run a few runners were able to keep Jones in sight, but after that he broke the race open, going on to win by almost half a kilometer. If he made it look easy, it wasn't.

"It hurt, it hurt," said Jones. "It's nice that the weather's cooling off, but the hills, the hills! I wasn't prepared."

Jones' route to the Pine Run was unique. 26 years old, he hadn't run in either high school or college.

"I started running because I wanted to join the Air Force, and I needed to lose weight," said Jones. "Then after basic training I had a lot of time on my hands, so I kept running."

Hong-Guo Yu

Mickey Moore was the fastest master runner in the Pine Run, taking second overall in 1:26:29. Dr. Hong-Guo Yu, another master runner, was third overall in 1:26:51, just ahead of Florida State University undergraduate Bryce Parry (4th, 1:26:55).

Katie Sherron and Alyssa Moore were leading the women's field early in the race, running together with several other runners. That lasted for just over half the race.

"I don't know where Katie got away the group, but around seven miles I was feeling bad so I dropped back," said Moore.

Sherron forged on, finishing the full twenty kilometers just after Moore passed the nineteen-kilometer mark. Moore was the women's runner-up and 24th overall in 1:42:30. Laura McDermott placed third in the women's standings and 30th overall in 1:47:54. Sarah Dugas was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 39th overall in 1:51:30.

By 11:00 AM the last of the runners had cleared the Pine Run course, leaving Tall Timbers to the trees, the wildlife, and the researchers. The quail would have some peace of mind till next October, when the 2020 Pine Runners returned to run a few more miles and flush a few more coveys.

111 athletes finished the 2019 Pine Run 20K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
