Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2024 (through January 27)

Another year, another year of tracking the best five-kilometer performances on the roads of Tallahassee, Florida.

So far, there has only been one 5K on the roads of Tallahassee on a USATF-certified course--Gulf Winds Track Club's 39th annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship on Saturday morning, 27 January 2024. After that race, the city's two fastest 5K performances for the year were from Dr. Ann Centner and Dr. Katie Sherron. You don't need a Ph.D. to run fast, but it apparently doesn't hurt. Dr. Centner won the race in 18:11, putting her at the top of the women's list. Dr. Sherron's 18:32 stands as the fastest time so far this year by a master runner. If you have an eye to the future of women's distance running in Tallahassee, you should look at the next two spots on the women's list--thirteen-year-old Charlotte Sikes ran 21:17 at Bowlegs, and twelve-year-old Alexis Mayfield ran 21:18. Both Sikes and Mayfield ran cross-country for Swift Creek Middle School during the previous fall.


Hawthorne Hay leads the men so far with the 18:41 he ran at Bowlegs, just ahead of the 18:44 posted by Maclay School's Charlie Wilson in the same race. Dr. Hong Guo-Yu went 18:58 at Bowlegs, which stands as the fastest time by a male master runner.

To be included on the list, times can't be from just any 5K race. Performances must meet the following criteria:
  • The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
  • The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
  • The race has to have published results
  • I have to see the results
With that in mind, it looks like the next chance to break into the rankings will be at the 35th annual Shamrock Scurry 5K on Saturday, 2 March 2024. After that, you might have to wait till the Gulf Winds Track Club's Springtime 5K on 6 April 2024, the Nene Fest 5K on 13 April 2024, or Gulf Winds Track Club's 49th annual Palace Saloon 5K on 20 April 2024.
