Gulf Winds Track Club 2010 Distinguished Service Award

[ A short address I made at the Gulf Winds Track Club annual awards meeting on 16 January 2010. ]

I'm an old cross-country guy, so I've run cross-country a lot of different places. Golf courses, military reservations, school yards, horse tracks, city parks, state parks, experimental forests, river levees, and so on. But on two different continents, I never ran anywhere that was just a cross-country course. Usually, the moment the race was over you were no longer welcome on the course. On some venues you didn't even feel welcome during the race. This was particularly true of golf courses.

Now, Tallahassee is a cross-country city. Really. You may not have noticed it because of all the noise accompanying another autumn sport, but it's true. The FSU Lady Seminoles placed second in the NCAA cross-country championships last November. Leon County high schools have fielded 24 state championship teams since 1969, and runners from those high schools have won 20 individual state titles. Back in the 1970s Florida State hosted the AIAW national cross-country championships, and in 1991 Tallahassee hosted the meet to select the United States team for the World Cross-Country Championships.

You won't find any place in Florida with a stronger tradition of cross-country running excellence than Tallahassee and Leon County. But our community also had a tradition of cross-country being chased out of one venue after another. Like most places, we didn't have a dedicated cross-country course.

Well, Pat Plocek, Bob Braman, and Brian Corbin weren't satisfied with their home being no better than most places. Pat Plocek works with the Leon County Division of Parks and Recreation and a little over a year ago he came up with a list of county lands on which a cross-country course could be developed. Brian Corbin and FSU coach Bob Braman know a little bit about running, and they picked out a part of Apalachee Regional Park along Lake Lafayette. Last winter Bob and Brian mapped out a loop in the park, and hacked out a narrow path through the woods. Pat did his magic with the county, and the path became a wide avenue. With support from Leon County, Gulf Winds Track Club, Florida State University, and an army of volunteers, Pat, Bob, and Brian turned jungles, swamps, and old cow pastures into a first rate cross country course in time for the 2009 FSU Invitational. Three cross-country meets have already been held on Leon County's Apalachee Regional Park Trail. There will be more. There is a good possibility that we'll see a NCAA regional meet on the course later this year.

Best of all, you can go out there tomorrow morning or any time the park is open and run. No one will hit golf balls at you, and you won't have to check the calendar to see whether or not it's deer season.

A special project like this deserves special recognition. For their role in delivering the Apalachee Regional Park Trail cross-country course to our community, the Gulf Winds Track Club would like to present FSU's Bob Braman, Leon County's Pat Plocek, and our own Brian Corbin with its first Distinguished Service Award.

1971 FHSAA Boys Track and Field Championships

Here's another set of "results from the attic," the 1971 Florida High School Activities Association boys' state track and field championships, held on Friday, 7 May 1971 and Saturday, 8 May 1971 at Showalter Field in Winter Park. This was the first time that the state meet had been held at Showalter, and it would be quite a few years before it returned to the University of Florida in Gainesville. 1971 was also the last year that the school classifications were AA, A, B, and C; the classes became AAAA, AAA, AA, and A the following year.

In 1971 the running events were still all imperial (non-metric) distances. A few events were contested that have since become obsolete, such as the 180-yard low hurdles. The championships had been racially integrated for several years, but there was still no girls' competition. The FHSAA wouldn't allow the girls on the track until later in the 1970s.

The source for these results was the microform edition of the Orlando Sentinel for Saturday, 8 May 1971 and Sunday, 9 May 1971.

Review and Resolve

I try not to write about the blog itself, but traditionally every writer gets at least one "freebie" at the start of the year. You know, the "Year In Review" article. Or column. Or issue. I promise not to milk it too dry.

2009 was my first full calendar year of blogging Trouble Afoot! I always wanted the blog to be mainly about places to run, walk, and cycle--i.e., trails. It was a good year for trails in the Tallahassee area. A number of paved, multi-use trails were built--the Lake Elberta Park Trail, the Lake Henrietta Park Trail, the Martha Wellman Pond Trail, and the first two-mile stretch of the Georgia, Florida, and Alabama Rail Trail. Unfortunately, these aren't connected to a trail network, but maybe someday. The Capital Circle Southeast Trail was also extended to link up with the Tallahassee-St Marks Historic Rail Trail. Off the pavement, Leon County built the Apalachee Regional Park Trail, and work has started on St Marks River State Park. With all that happening, there was always plenty to write about. Maybe too much.

Thus my resolution.

Don't you hate New Year's resolutions? I do. But here's a simple one for Trouble Afoot! I'd like to clear my backlog. With all the great trails in Tallahassee and the places I've visited, I have quite a few trails that I've taken notes on, or taken picture of, but for which I just never quite finished writing a report. So by the end of 2010, I'd like to be done with all of those, including:
  • Mahan Drive Trail
  • Capital Circle Southeast Trail Extension
  • Goose Pond Trail
  • Bear Creek Trails
  • St George Island Bike Path
  • Moultrie Trail
  • Three ascents of Blood Mountain
  • Chiefland to Trenton on the Nature Coast Trail
  • Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail
  • Woody Gap
  • Land Bridge Loop
  • Overlook Loop
  • South Chickamauga Creek Greenway Trail
That would be a good start. And if I fail to keep the resolution, I won't even have to admit it until late December, when it will be too late to possibly finish all that writing. With any luck by then I'll have forgotten all about this and be on to wondering what to do in 2011.

Cox, Switzer winners at a chilly Bowlegs 5K

Stephen Cox ran a 17:21 5K around Tallahassee's Innovation Park, leading a field of 84 runners who braved race-time temperatures in the 20s to run the 26th annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship, the first Gulf Winds Track Club race of 2010. Matt Minno was the top master in the race, finishing seventh overall in 20:44. Top woman honors went to Lauren Switzer, ninth overall in 21:01, a former soccer player for the Florida State University Lady Seminoles. For the third time in the race's history, Fran McLean was the top master woman, finishing 21st overall in 22:52.

The initial charge away from the FAMU / FSU School of Engineering was led by Charles Kemeny, who led the early stages of the race. Cox was never far behind, however, and eventually caught Kemeny and won going away, ending the race with a lead of over 200 meters. There was less drama in the women's competition as Switzer led almost from start to finish, crossing the line about a quarter mile ahead of women's runner-up McLean.

At 84 finishers, the field was the smallest it had been in five years. It's possible that some runners were discouraged from coming by dire predictions of temperatures in the teens. Weather forecasts, though, always tend toward the apocalyptic, and the actual temperature during the race was 26 to 27 °F. This is indeed cold for north Florida, but it's all what you're used to. The women's winner, Lauren Switzer, is from St. Charles, Illinois--she probably thought it was an early spring.

Centerville Trail, Tallahassee, Florida

The Centerville Trail is a paved, ten-foot wide, 1.72-mile long multi-use trail in the northeast of Leon County. Also called the Centerville Conservation Trail, the Pisgah Church Pedway, and the Centerville Pedway, the trail runs along the north side of Pisgah Church Road and the west side of Centerville Road, hugging the border of the Centerville Conservation Community. The trail's pavement is a coarse, permeable blacktop, covered in many places with leaves or pine needles as it meanders underneath huge live oaks.

Here's an end-to-end description of the Centerville Trail, starting from the west.

The west end of the trail is along Pisgah Church Road, less than a tenth of a mile from the intersection with Bradfordville Road. Residents of the Baker Place subdivision can access the trail using a footpath leading about 100 yards from a greenspace along Grenville Road. The rest of us are out of luck; Baker Place has their path marked by a friendly sign reading "PRIVATE PROPERTY--Baker Place Homeowners Association."

Heading east, Pisgah Church Road is close at hand on the right, while a longleaf pine and wiregrass environment is on the left. This is designated on maps of the Centerville Conservation Community as a gopher tortoise preserve. At 0.30 miles the trail crosses Wiregrass Way and the longleaf pines give way to live oaks and rail fences. This is horse land; occasional signs ask that you "Please avoid contact with the horses." East of Wiregrass Way the trail crosses two small wooden bridges across seasonal streams (drainage ditches to anyone who doesn't write poetry or real estate ad copy). At 0.70 miles there is a small parking area to the right of the trail, only large enough for two or three cars. This is the closest to a trailhead that the Centerville Trail has.

The trail reaches the intersection of Pisgah Church Road and Centerville Road at 0.86 miles, and makes a sharp left turn to follow Centerville Road. On the left there is a view of a holding pond inside the horse fence. The trail starts a respectable climb here; this is not a pancake-flat rail trail. Centerville Road is busier than Pisgah Church Road, so you can usually hear traffic noise. On the other hand, the trail is often far enough away from Centerville Road that the traffic doesn't intrude on your eyes even if it trespasses on your ears.

At 1.12 miles the trail crosses Conservation Drive. A plaque here reads:

The Centervillle Conservation Community is a lot more hospitable than Baker Place.

On the other hand, Centerville Conservation Community maintains about seven miles of trails for the sole use of its residents. You can see one of these blue-blazed trails intersecting the Centerville Trail on the left at 1.38 miles and another at 1.42 miles. These flank a swamp that has been set aside for snakes and birds. At 1.63 miles the trail crosses Lick Skillet Drive, a short dead-end road that is home to four vacant lots. Shortly after crossing Lick Skillet is the east end of the Centerville Trail, 1.72 miles from the west end. Beyond the trail's end is City of Tallahassee / Leon County Fire Station Number 11. If you have a moment, stop and admire their memorial garden.

The Centerville Trail passes some rich wildlife habitats. You'd have to be totally oblivious not to spot a dozen species of birds along the way. Quail and red-headed woodpeckers seem especially abundant. Fox squirrels roam the live oak woods. There are only three road crossings, all Centerville Conservation Community roads, which will never see much traffic even when the development fills up.

Other than the few parking spots along Pisgah Church Road a couple of tenths of a mile from Centerville Road, there isn't any place for visitors to access the Centerville Trail. But at only 1.72 miles long, the trail may be too short to attract many visitors. It's a good trail for local users, though, and you can spot more than a few people walking it. I've never seen horses on the trail, but frequent patches of manure testify to their passage. And the Centerville Road Trail is not far away. Each of the two trails is less than two miles long, but if they could be connected then northeast Tallahassee would have a respectable multi-use trail--albeit a respectable multi-use trail in need of a trailhead.

The Ben Johnson Detective Agency

If you're an old enough track fan, you'll remember Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson. Back in the 1980s, Johnson had established himself as the fastest ever in the 100m dash. He won Olympic gold in the event at the 1988 (Seoul) Olympic Games, beating Carl Lewis. But when the report on Johnson's post-race urine sample came back from the lab, it showed that Johnson had tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol. Johnson was stripped of his medal. The disqualified sprinter howled that the positive test must have been the result of a spiked drink he was handed after the race, but his protests went unheeded.

Now, over twenty years later, Johnson claims to have proof that he was indeed the victim of a stanozolol-laced drink. You'll have to wait to see this "proof," though. It's set to appear in Johnson's upcoming autobiography, coming to A Bookseller Near You in February. Hopefully his book will sell many, many copies, so that Johnson can turn his Sherlockian talents to other longstanding mysteries. I expect that in the next few years Ben Johnson will discover:
  • The identity of the true killer of Nicole Brown Simpson.
  • How NASA faked the moon landings.
  • The origin and location of the alien corpses found near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.
  • Adolph Hitler's hideout in Argentina.
  • Proof that Dr. Frederick Cook was the first to reach the North Pole.
Not to mention the embarrassment that Johnson could have saved the Bush administration if only he had been turned loose in Iraq to search for the Weapons of Mass Destruction. The greatest mystery to me is why this super-sleuth was ever wasting his time in athletics.

Seriously, Johnson's story about a spiked drink leading to his disqualification seemed pathetic at the time, and it's just sad that he's still clinging to it over twenty years later. Mike Hurst has reported the story in the Sydney (Australia) Daily Telegraph, and it's clear from what Hurst has written that Johnson's version of events is no more believable in the 21st century than it was in the 20th. No matter how many "confessions" Johnson produces from "conspirators," it is still metabolically impossible that for a spiked drink to have produced the specific positive test that led to disqualification. Johnson himself no longer claims to be clean, or to have never used stanozolol, he just says that he wasn't using it that day.

I'm a big fan of athletics books, especially biography, but I'll probably give this one a pass.

Big Bend Runners make All-Florida Team

FLRunners.com named it's All-Florida high school cross-country teams Wednesday, and, not surprisingly, the Tallahassee area was well represented.

On the boys' squad, Leon High School's Matt Mizereck made first team and was named Runner of the Year. Maclay School's Patrick Swain made second team All-Florida. At the state championships in November, Mizereck won his third straight FHSAA-3A title, and Swain won the FHSAA-1A title for the second year in a row.

For the girls, Jana Stolting of Maclay was named to the All-Florida first team. Maclay freshman Stefanie Kurgatt, Chiles High School sophomore Carly Thomas, and Chiles sophomore Lily Williams earned second team All-Florida honors. Thomas was the 2009 FHSAA-3A champion, finishing half a second ahead of her teammate Williams.

The rosters of the FLRunners.com 2009 All-Florida high school cross-country teams are posted at:

Tuesday the Florida Dairy Farmers named Thomas and Williams's coach, Scott Gowan, as the 2009 girls' high school cross-country coach of the year. Gowan led the Chiles girls to their second straight FHSAA-3A team championship this year.

So when you're running the Lake Overstreet Trail, and some young kids flash by you so fast you feel like you're standing still, don't feel bad. You're being dusted by some of the best prep runners in the state of Florida.
