Area performances at the 2011 Breast Cancer Marathon

One way of identifying the truly top-tier cities in North America is to see which ones have two Major League Baseball teams. There aren't many. Chicago, of course, and New York. Los Angeles, kind of. You could tell that Philadelphia and Boston were no longer contending to be the supreme metropolis on the east coast when they lost the Athletics and the Braves, respectively.

But not many cities have two marathons.

Jacksonville, Florida is one, though. There is the Jacksonville Marathon (now the Jacksonville Bank Marathon) which is the older brother, the one with the fast times and the history. Then there is the baby sister, only four years old but already grown into one the largest marathons in Florida--after Disney, of course. The new kid is the 26.2 With Donna, The National Marathon To End Breast Cancer.

The Donna started off big in 2008 with 1,680 finishers in the first race. The fourth Donna on Sunday, 13 February 2011 had 1,628 finishers. There were a lot more in the half-marathon, but we're talking marathons. Being right next door, the Trouble Afoot! region contributed more than a few of the finishers in 2011. Tallahassee's Brian Corbin was the fastest of those, running 3:17:07 to place 45th overall. The fastest woman from the area within 100 miles of Tallahassee was Shannon McNees who finished 146th overall, turning a 3:46:55.

Kennedy Kemei was the overall winner of the fourth annual Donna at 2:20:00, and Anzhelika Averkova ran 2:36:49 to finish as the first woman. Below are the finishers from the Trouble Afoot! region, 70 strong. If I missed anyone it's because I'm stupid.

Kiss and run--Ferrell and Bontrager win Chattahoochee Smoochie

Up and down the banks of the Apalachicola River, Devin Ferrell is winning road races. Last December, the Altha School cross-country runner edged out Brian Corbin for the top spot at 2010 Jingle Bell 5K in Blountstown, Florida. Moving to the east bank of the river on Saturday, 12 February 2011, Ferrell raced to victory at the inaugural Chattahoochee Smoochie 5K. Once again it came down to a kick for Ferrell, but he was fast enough at the end to hold off Blountstown High distance runner Thomas Howell, 20:06 to 20:08. Jody Bontrager of Fitness Evolution was the first woman, placing ninth overall in 23:01. Bontrager led a Zumba warm-up routine before the race, but some of us will always stick to a thirty-minute jog followed by a long stride-out and some light stretching.

145 runners finished the first year event, which was directed by Margo Lamb. The race started and finished at Angus Gholson Nature Park, touring the very hilly streets of Chattahoochee, Florida. Yes, there are hills in Florida, and anyone who doesn't believe it should try running up and down River Landing Road in Chattahoochee a few times.

Boston Marathon announces new registration process

After the field for the 2011 Boston Marathon filled up on the first day of registration on 18 October 2010, the Boston Athletic Association realized that for future editions of the 115-year-old race the entry process was going to have to be re-tooled. If they hadn't seen it themselves, a lot of unhappy people that got shut out of the 2011 Boston Marathon were quite willing to point out the shortcomings of registration. Seven-time winner Bill Rodgers pointed out that he wasn't good enough with a computer to have made it into the race.

The BAA promised change, but stated that they were unhappy with either going to faster qualifying standards or instituting a lottery. Well, if you aren't willing to reduce the size of your pool of applicants, and you aren't going to reject some of those applicants, what are you going to do?

So on 16 February 2011 the Boston Athletic Association announced the changes for 2012 and 2013. Qualifying time aren't being lowered for 2012, but they'll be five minutes faster in 2013. However, the de facto qualifying standards will be even faster in both years, because BAA will also be adding a "rolling admission system." Here is what's happening in 2012:

Registration will occur on a “rolling admission” schedule until the maximum field size is reached, beginning with the fastest qualifiers. On the first day of registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon, those who are eligible for entry by having met the qualifying standards for their age and gender group by 20 minutes or more will be able to enter on the first day of registration (September 12). On the third day (September 14), registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by 10 minutes or more. On the fifth day (September 16), registration will open for those who have met their qualifying standards by five minutes or more. During this first week of registration, applicants will be notified as they are accepted and their qualifying performance verified.

Well, a week has gone by, and if you qualified by just a few seconds, you still haven't been allowed to enter.

If the field size is not reached after the first week and additional space remains, then registration will open to all qualifiers at the beginning of Week Two (September 19) and those who have met the qualifying standards by any amount of time will be able to apply for entry. The application process will remain open for the entire week, closing on September 23. At the conclusion of Week Two, those who are the fastest among the pool of applicants in their age and gender will be accepted. Accepted athletes will be notified on September 28.

Notice: "If the field size is not reached after the first week." This reads like BAA fully expects the marathon to fill up sometime in the first week, so your qualifying time only qualified you for disappointment. Even if the marathon isn't full after the first week, a marginal qualifying time doesn't qualify you to enter but only to apply for entry.

Because the race will likely be full before those just under the qualifying standard are allowed to apply, the actual qualifying times are in effect faster for 2012, event though the posted standards remain the same. For 2013 BAA will have the same "rolling admission system" and posted qualifying times that are five minutes faster.

I'm not unhappy to see this. Boston has to limit the number of entries. If you're going to pick a criterion for allowing people in, the fastest qualifying time is a good one. At least it's better than favoring the guy who can write a computer program to auto-register, or the person who draws the lucky number in the entry lottery. This way the race retains integrity as a sporting event. It's still a lot more open than events of similar luster in other sports, because qualifying times are adjusted for age and sex. After all, no one gets a bye into Wimbledon because he's over 60, and no one is going to get special consideration for a Super Bowl roster because they're female.

I also wouldn't be unhappy to learn that the BAA had done away with entries for non-qualifiers, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Honeycutt and Honeycutt break hearts at Tifton's Sweetheart Run

Tifton's Hunter Honeycutt is a busy athlete. In the last half a year he has competed at the ITU World Duathlon Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, put in a full season of racing cross country for Tift County High School, and just finished the high school swimming season at the Georgia state championships. Along the way he manages to win a road race here and there, like the Run For Love 5K. And this past Saturday, 12 February 2011, Honeycutt logged another road race win at Tifton's 14th annual Sweetheart Run 5K, finishing in front of over 100 other runners with a 17:00 effort. About 150 meters behind Honeycutt, Mark McLeod finished as runner-up in 17:28. McLeod is a 2010 alumnus of the distance-running program at Fitzgerald High School. Behind McLeod, Tifton's Bret Wagenhorst finished in third place at 19:27; Wagenhorst was the top master in the race.

The first female finisher was Tifton's Madison Honeycutt, who outran Minerva Arreguin 22:06 to 22:26 for the women's title. Madison Honeycutt runs cross country for Eight Street Middle School, where she led the team with a fourth-place finish at the Georgia Middle School State Championships at the end of the 2010 season. Arreguin is also a cross-country runner, having just finished her first season competing for South Georgia College in Douglas. Close behind Arreguin in 22:31, Casi McDonald, another collegiate freshman, took third. McDonald competes for Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus. Top honors for women masters went to Tifton's Penny Peters, who finished 30th overall in 25:42.

Avenger and Peters play hard to get at Sweetheart 5K

Four weeks after a victory at Tifton's ABAC Fitness 5K, the Masked Avenger was back on the roads in Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday, 12 February 2011, winning the St John School Sweetheart 5K in 18:08. The next two spots went to Doyle Wallace (2nd, 18:32) and Austin Wallace (3rd, 19:36), distance runners at Valdosta High School. Valdosta's Steven Plymale was the top master finisher, placing fifth overall in 20:36.

Alison Peters, a Lowndes High School freshman distance runner, took the women's title in 22:08, finishing 14th overall. Peters finished almost 400 meters ahead of the next woman in, Sarah VanKuiken (20th, 23:49) of Valdosta. Just behind VanKuiken in 23:58, the top woman master and third woman finisher was Valdosta's Julia Baun.

The Sweetheart 5K was a fundraiser for the cross-country team of St John The Evangelist Catholic School. The course was on the streets around the school, and the race was followed by a one-mile fun run.

Sheryl Rosen wins by a thin mint, Kevin Sullivan by a bakery

Three-time Olympian Kevin Sullivan dominated a field of over 400 runners at Tallahassee's "Run For The Cookies" 5K, winning the 19th annual event in 15:50 on Saturday morning, 12 February 2011. Sullivan finished nearly 300 meters ahead of the next finisher, runner-up Vince Molosky (16:46). Sheryl Rosen, after trailing the whole race, came on at the end to catch Lisa Johnson at the finish line and winning the women's division in 19:02.

The race started on a clear, brisk morning near Tallahassee Community College's Lifetime Sports Fitness Center. There was a five-minute delay in the start while a group of roller bladers were allowed to start around the course ahead of the runners. Once the race started, Kevin Sullivan quickly emerged as the first real leader, closely followed by Lincoln High distance runner Trevor Touchton. Touchton had also tried hanging with the leader in the 2010 Cookie Run; it did not work any better for him in 2011. After a mile of trying to keep up with Sullivan, Touchton was done for the morning. Molosky moved past him into second, holding that position to the end. Nate Kaiser caught Stanley Linton to move into third, eventually finishing in that place with a 16:54. Linton (5th, 17:24) ended up being outkicked by Chris Coutts (4th, 17:22). "Marathon Jack" McDermott (6th, 17:28) moved up through the field to end up as first master, over 120 meters ahead of the fading Touchton (7th, 17:55).

Lisa Johnson was the initial women's leader, followed closely by Kelly Stevens and Sheryl Rosen. Rosen passed Stevens around 1,500m, but still trailed Johnson by about ten seconds. With less than half a kilometer to go, Rosen had narrowed the gap, but was still about six seconds behind Johnson. Stevens was still in sight, but not a factor. Rosen caught Johnson on the final straight. The two flashed over the line almost together, both clocked in 19:02, but Rosen got the decision. Stevens, third among the women, finished a few seconds later, 18th overall in 19:17. Brandi Campbell (30th, 20:19) and Micah Adriani (32nd, 20:28) were the next two women in, followed by the top woman master, Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson (25th, 20:42).

431 athletes finished the 2011 "Run For The Cookies" 5K, an annual fundraiser for the Girls Scouts of the Big Bend. Another 58 finished the earlier one-mile fun run. A February race, the "Run For The Cookies" can be cold and it can be cloudy. But any runner who shrugs off the weather to compete gets a box of Girl Scout cookies and a chance to run on one of the fastest 5K courses in the area.

Del Valle signs with Seminoles

Armando Del Valle, a highly decorated high school distance runner from Miami's Columbus High School, has signed a NCAA letter of intent to attend Florida State University. Bob Braman, head coach of the Seminoles, expect Del Valle will contribute immediately to the Garnet and Gold's success in both cross country and track-and-field.

Going into his senior year track season, Del Valle has personal best of 4:15.59 and 9:07.98 in the 1600m and 3200m. Both of those times came at the 2010 FHSAA class 4A state championships, where Del Valle placed second in the 1600m, first in the 3200, and helped Columbus to a win in the 4 x 800m relay. Del Valle also appeared in those events at the 2008 and 2009 FHSAA stae meets, winning the 1600m in 2009. In cross-country, Del Valle was consistently an All-State performer in class 4A for all four years of his high school career, always finishing in the top ten in the state championships, and placing second during his sophomore season in 2008. In 2010 Del Valle won the title at Nike's NXN Southeast Regional Championship in prep cross country.
