Gardner and Smoot dash rivals hopes at 'Dosta Dash

Back in a bygone Golden Age of Valdosta distance running, one of the fixtures on the south Georgia road-racing scene was the Road Race Valdosta 10K. Since those days, Valdosta State College ended a run of great teams by dropping cross country in 1979, Gary Slayton moved on to other pastures, and Road Race Valdosta disappeared. But for the last seven years, the Valdosta Junior Service League has kept a 10K on the Valdosta racing schedule with the 'Dosta Dash 10K. For runners who quail at the 6.2-mile distance, the event also includes a 5K race and a one-mile fun run.

After coming up second best to Austin McDonald in the 2010 'Dosta Dash 10K, Scot Gardner of Naylor, Georgia returned to race again on 26 March 2011, improving his time 80 seconds to 36:15 and taking the title. McDonald also turned 40 since the 2010 race, so he was the fastest master as well. One thing didn't change from the previous year--Gardner again finished one place ahead of Valdosta's Masked Avenger, runner-up at 37:08. It was the Avenger's first Valdosta-area loss in 2011, a streak he had started with a win over Gardner at the First Race of the New Year 5K on January 8. Alice Smoot continued to win in Valdosta, though, finishing as the top woman and the top woman master. Smoot placed 12th overall in 44:05, crossing the finish line with a 50 meter lead on the women's runner-up, Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer (15th, 45:20).

Mason and Grayson top the fields at Ability First

Road races in Tallahassee have been re-routed due to construction, held up by passing freight trains, or re-scheduled because of inclement weather. But the Ability First 5K on 26 March 2011 must have established a Capital City first when the police insisted that the course be changed to detour a crime scene. When Bill Lott was marking the course, he came upon the police roping off the location of a suspected suicide. In accordance with law enforcement demands, the race route was hurriedly changed. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to come up with a course that was actually five kilometers long, and the race ended up short.

Britain's Kev Mason didn't seem put out at all by the missing mileage. The Brighton & Cove Club runner raced to 15:53 victory, finishing over 200 meters ahead of runner-up Mike Nesius (2nd, 17:01). Mason declared it his American personal record for the distance. Well, maybe; if you keep personal records for 4872 meter runs. Or perhaps they don't worry about course certification in the United Kingdom.

The fastest master runner in the race was the fastest woman in the race, Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson, who posted a 19:05 for the not-quite-5K race, well ahead of women's runner up Summer Calder (11th, 22:02). The top male master was Chuck Davis, who finished seventh overall in 20:05, just a week after directing the Doggie Dash 5K.

82 athletes completed the race.

Kennett and Parker scrappiest 'scarp scalers at the Cody Climb

Michael Kennett lost no time in grabbing a lead, which he built into a victory margin of over 700 meters in the second annual Cody Climb--an eight-kilometer tour of Tallahassee's Southwood community staged on Sunday, 27 March 2011. Kennett's time was 33:29, breaking Keith Gates' 2010 course record of 33:36. Brian Davis (2nd, 35:59) was the next runner across the finish line, followed by top master Jeff Bryan. Bryan's time of 36:29 established a new master record for the race, edging out Dana Stetson's 2010 master standard of 36:40. Stetson himself was on hand, placing fourth in 37:42.

Jessica Parker was the top woman in the race, placing fifth overall and setting a new women's course record of 39:00, shattering the 49:11 set by Jacque Myers in 2010. Parker finished just over 200 meters ahead of the women's runner-up, Karima Anderson, who was eighth overall in 40:22. The third woman in was top woman master Paula O'Neill, whose 41:26 established a new women's master record for the event.

The Cody Climb 8K originated in response to put-up-or-shut-up comments about my complaints of a surfeit of 5K races and a deficit of other racing distance on the Tallahassee calendar. I had made special note that there was currently no 8K road race on the schedule, although there had been on the past (and the Miller Landing Madness features an 8K cross-country race). With a philosophy of doing less with less, I put together the 2010 race on the first Sunday of spring. I'm not sure how many people thought I was serious. Well, I was serious about putting on a race, just not much else. Anyway, it stormed that morning, and seven people showed up. I figured that was the end of it. I had conscientiously avoided using the term "first annual," so who could even expect a second edition?

Quite a few people, actually. The 2010 participants casually dropped the phrase "next year" so often that you'd think they were Cubs fans. "Next year it won't rain." "Next year more people will run the Cody Climb." "When is next year's race?" And then, "I missed the Cody Climb, but I'm going to run it next year." The author L. Frank Baum once referred to his readers as "gentle tyrants" who had driven him to write a dozen sequels to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A similar band of tyrants was demanding the return of the Cody Climb. Beaten, I finally announced the race for Sunday, 27 March 2011, which I thought was the first Sunday of spring. I was wrong about that; it turns out that in the 21st century spring begins most often on March 20, while during the gentle past century when I grew up the first day of spring was usually March 21. As you age they take even the calendar of your youth from you.

Fifteen runners gathered at the starting line for the race. Unlike the previous year it hadn't been raining, but the skies were threatening. Judi Taber started the race with a dropped handkerchief, an athletic tradition from the Victorian Era. Michael Kennett went right to the front and proceeded to put the race out of reach. By the end of the first kilometer, Jeff Bryan--a week after a 50-kilometer run around Alabama's Oak Mountain--took up the second position. Brian Davis staked out the spot just behind Bryan, followed by Ace Haddock, Joe Mitchell, and Dana Stetson. Trailing Stetson, Jessica Parker led the women, just ahead of Karima Anderson.

As the runners negotiated the Four Oaks Boulevard-Blair Stone Road roundabout at the end of the third kilometer, Kennett's lead had only grown, while Davis still stalked Bryan. Stetson had moved up in fourth, though, pushing Haddock back into fifth. Parker had moved past Mitchell into sixth. Three kilometers later, as the runners started to descend the Cody Scarp to the finish line on the coastal plain, Davis had caught Bryan to move into second. Davis held that position over the closing stages of the race, which Parker overtook Haddock to take fifth. Mike Baker caught Joe Mitchell and Karima Anderson, capturing seventh.

The course, which climbs up and and then back down the Cody Escarpment thereby taking in nearly every hill in Southwood, generated the usual comments. Women's champ Jessica Parker commented, "I lived in Colorado and before that Vermont so I'm used to hills, but I didn't expect to see them in Tallahassee!" She added, "It reminds me of where I grew up in Ohio." Women's master title-winner Paula O'Neill enjoyed the race but declared, "We've got to keep this underground!"

She has a point. A couple dozen runners could probably loop Southwood with comment or even notice. But a couple hundred--assuming that many people wanted to run up and down the Cody Scarp--would be a different story. You'd need traffic control at the intersections. Southwood residents would start complaining about 12-second delays on their drive to church. Someone would want the course certified so he could use it as a Peachtree qualifier. Someone else would wonder why there wasn't a Cody Climb T-shirt. Another runner would admit she liked the race, but wished it were on the Gulf Winds Track Club Grand Prix.

As long as everyone goes home and lies about the severity of the hills, though, there's not much chance that more than a few runners will ever show up to "scale the scarp." Just to make sure of that, I refuse to acknowledge that there will ever be a third Cody Climb. That's right; you can't put it on your calendar for the first Sunday of spring in 2012. It just isn't going to happen. Maybe.

Kaus sets record while Barrett defends title at Autism 5K

Racing five kilometers through the foggy streets of Southwood in a course record time of 17:55, Peter Kaus defeated a field of nearly 200 athletes in the third annual Run For Autism on Saturday morning, 26 March 2011. Finishing runner-up behind Kaus, Tony Guillen ran 18:12 to claim the top master spot. Florida State University swimmer Jamie Barrett successfully defended her 2010 Autism 5K title, coming from behind in the late stages of the race to beat women's runner-up Ashley Daily, 21:10 to 21:52. The fastest woman master in the race was Constance Mayo, who posted a 23:09 to finish 26th overall as the eighth woman.

The race started at the Southwood Town Center and circled Southwood's central park before returning to the Town Center for the finish. In a replay of the early stages of the Shamrock Scurry two weeks ago and the Doggie Dash a week ago, Cairo's Stephen Robbins went right to the front of the field. By the end of the first kilometer, though, Peter Kaus had taken over the lead, with Robbins chasing. On the second kilometer master runner Tony Guillen passed Robbins, closing in on Kaus. By the end of the third kilometer Kaus and Guillen were only a few steps apart and way out in front of the rest of the field. During the fourth kilometer Kaus started to move away, and built up a ten-second lead on Guillen, who was fifteen seconds ahead of Robbins. Guillen fell farther behind Kaus on the final kilometer, while Robbins closed in. The positions remained unchanged, though, and Kaus went on to a 17:55 win, Guillen placing second in 18:12, and Robbins third in 18:18.

Ashley Daily set the early pace for the women, but Eileen Flynn was right behind her, and Jamie Barrett back of Flynn. Those were the top three women, and at the end of the first kilometer they were less than twenty meters apart. As they circled the central park, the three settled into a tight lead group. After three kilometers they were still running in the same order but in a tight group. Barrett made a move on the fourth kilometer, passing both Flynn and Daily. Daily tried to respond, but Barrett opened up a gap, while Flynn fell even farther back into third. With a kilometer to go Barrett had a 50-meter lead on Daily, with Flynn another 30 meters back. Barrett won going away, crossing the finish line over 100 meters ahead of Daily.

Many runners mentioned the thick fog that enveloped Southwood on the morning of the race, but the one subject that everyone returned to was The Hill. The start and finish of the race was on Ivy Green Trail, which dropped from the Town Center to Central Park at the start, and climbed from Central Park back up to the Town Center at the finish. It wasn't particularly steep, and it was just over 100 meters long, but coming at the end of the race it tended to make an impression on people. In spite of the hill, the 5K had 192 recorded finishers, with another 35 athletes completing an earlier one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the event went to the Florida State University Autism Project, directly benefiting individuals in the Florida Panhandle with autism spectrum disorder.

2011 Cody Climb 8K

The Inexplicable Return of the Cody Climb 8K
An Eight-Kilometer Road Race With No Amenities
"Because Tallahassee still doesn't have any other 8K road race"

Sunday, 27 March 2011 @ 9:00am ET
Southwood, Tallahassee, Florida

The Cody Climb is a road race with almost none of the services or features you've come to expect from a road race. The event was first run in 2010. I admit that there is no good reason to do it again, but there was no good reason to do it in the first place. The participants seem to have some affection for the run, though, and who am I to deny them? After all, they do know where I live. The course has not changed from last year:
Start on the Capital Circle Southeast Trail between Merchants Row Boulevard and Shumard Oaks Boulevard. Head south on the trail to Shumard Oaks. Head east on Shumard Oaks (use the bike lane) to 4 Oaks Boulevard. Head north on 4 Oaks Boulevard to Orange Avenue, climbing out of the coastal plain up the Cody Escarpment and into the Red Hills. Head west on Orange Avenue to the Capital Circle Southeast Trail. Head south on the trail to Merchants Row Boulevard, descending the Cody Escarpment to return to the coastal plain. Head east on Merchants Row to the first right, an apparently nameless road. Head south on the nameless road to 4 Oaks Boulevard. Head west on Shumard Oaks to the Capital Circle Southeast Trail. Head north on the trail to return to the starting line.
The entry fee remains any United States Federal Reserve Note. No coins, no checks. In return for this nominal entry fee we will be providing very little. Here is a long list of some of the things you won't find at this race:
  • NO T-SHIRTS
I mean, you can wear one, but we're not going to give you one.

  • NO AWARDS
Other than the satisfaction of a race well run.

  • NO REFRESHMENTS
Bring your own water or sports drink or soda or beer for pre- and post-race hydration. And I know that you'll clean up after yourself, but could you make sure that your friend does, too? (He's kind of a pig.)

  • NO PRE-REGISTRATION
Show up on race day. Or not.

  • NO ONLINE REGISTRATION
Although you'd probably figured that out when you saw that there was no pre-registration.

  • NO CHANGE
Entry fee is any Federal Reserve note, as small a denomination as you care to bring. If you're too lazy to scrounge up a dollar bill then we're too lazy to make change for your twenty (but we will thank you for it).

  • NO COINS
    See above.

  • NO CHECKS
    See above.

  • NO PROCEEDS
At a dollar a head, we're hoping to cover expenses like course marking and printing, but probably not. At any rate, there shouldn't be enough left over to benefit the National Dandruff Society or the Homeless Lemur Foundation. If there is a net from the race, we promise to spend it unwisely.

  • NO COURSE CERTIFICATION
We aren't going to the trouble and expense of having the course certified by the USATF. It will be carefully measured. If you want to pay someone to certify the course, I'm willing to bet that he'll discover that it was accurate.

  • NO TRAFFIC CONTROL
The course was designed to encounter minimum traffic by using bike lanes and paved multi-use trails, but there are intersections and road crossings. Be at least as cautious as you would be on a training run. Don't dash across roads without looking. Don't make the cars angry; they are bigger than you are and will always win. Be especially careful because there is...

  • NO INSURANCE
So don't be flattened by a truck, bitten by a dog, run yourself into heat exhaustion, or get a really bad blister.
The course will be marked, but it would be a good idea to learn it before the race anyway. There are only eight turns, so it's not hard to follow. Here's a map:

You can also study the course tour that I put together last year.

We'll probably freshen up the kilometer marks that were put down last year. We'll time the race. I'll compile and publish results. Don't expect a crowd. If I see a crowd when I'm driving up to the starting area, I'll probably just keep driving.

The start, by the way, will be on the Capital Circle Southeast Trail just north of Shumard Oak Boulevard; i.e., close enough to the corner of Capital Circle Southeast (US 310) and Shumard Oak Boulevard to spit on it. Registration will be nearby starting an hour or so before the race. There is a lot of parking within sight of the starting line. If you can't find a place to park, I don't want to know you.

If you'd like to volunteer (mark the course, course marshal, finish line specialist, cheerleader) or you just want to know more, contact me at hwills@gmail.com.
