If Dan Butzin didn't experience "the loneliness of the long-distance runner" during the fifth annual James Eunice Legacy 5K, it wasn't for lack of solitude. There may have been 77 runners in the race, but Butzin had no company at all during his Saturday morning, 9 April 2016, run through the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. Winning the race in 18:43, Butzin finished 400 meters ahead of the next runner. The women's competition may not have been companionable, but it was close--Alison Thornhill edged Alice Smoot for the title, 21:23 to 21:26.Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the top master runner in the race, finishing runner-up in 20:21. Another Valdosta athlete, Rob McGhin, was third in 20:47.
The top two women, Thornhill and Smoot, were fourth and fifth overall. Debbie Green, a Valdosta master runner, was third in the women's standings and seventh overall in 22:42.
77 athletes finished the race. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
