Haynes and Sherron outrun April showers to win the Springtime 10K

The Tallahassee, Florida weather forecasts for Saturday morning, 7 April 2018, were frightening, featuring high winds and severe thunderstorms. But the dire predictions didn’t scare away Springtime 10K defending champion Chris Haynes. Haynes won his second straight title that morning, running 32:31. Katie Sherron edged Ann Centner for the top woman's spot in the race, 38:57 to 38:59 and placing fourteenth overall.

Worries about the weather caused the 8:10 AM start of the 43rd annual race to be moved to 8:00. The 10K as well as the concurrently-run 5K started in front of the Leon County Courthouse right at the newly-scheduled time. Mark Zamani, racing the 5K, dashed out in front of the field. A Florida State University undergraduate from Naugatuck, Connecticut, Zamani was still leading at the mile mark. That was about to change, thanks to Chris Haynes, a University of North Florida alumnus who works at Leon High.

“I hit the first mile in 5:16 or 5:17, probably slower than I wanted,” recalled Haynes. “The guy who was in first was kind of dying. Last year I waited till 5K to move up but this year I wanted to move up and push the pace earlier.”

Haynes moved up. By a mile and a quarter, when the athletes were headed up the Lafayette Street hill, he was in the lead. But Justin Garrard was right behind Haynes as the race turned into Myers Park. Garrard had never run the Springtime 10K before, but he had won the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 10K in 2016, running 32:01, the fastest road 10K in town that year. Haynes had run 33:29 in that race, finishing second to Garrard. Garrard had also won the 2017 Tallahassee Turkey Trot in 32:42, once again the city-leading time for the year.

“I’m not going to lie,” said Haynes. “That guy kind of scared me.”

During the next three miles Haynes continued to lead with Garrard in striking distance behind him. The two left the rest of the field far behind. With less than two miles to go, Haynes started to widen the gap.

“After like four or four-and-a-half miles I really started pushing it,” said Haynes. “I ran 4:50 for the last mile. The last mile was really fast because of the downhill.”

Haynes roared out of Myers Park and down the Lafayette Street hill, then turned on to Suwannee Street where he crossed the finish line in 32:31. Garrard took second in 33:22. Charlie Johnson, second in the 2017 Springtime, placed third in 35:20. Mickey Moore edged Tony Guillen for first master runner, 38:42 to 38:48. Moore and Guillen were eleventh and twelfth overall.

The 32:31 was Haynes’ best time ever for a road 10K. That wasn’t the case for Katie Sherron in the women’s competition.

Katie Sherron

“It wasn’t a PR or anything, but it was my first Springtime win,” said Sherron.

In order to get that win, Sherron had to line up against Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen, a two-time women's champ at the Springtime 10K. But it was neither Rosen nor Sherron who took the early lead over the women's field. Instead, Ann Centner of Blakely, Georgia was setting the pace for the women during the first half of the race. Rosen dropped out of contact, but Sherron remained a few seconds behind Centner.

“At halfway or 5K I went after her,” said Sherron.

Overtaking Center, Sherron built up a lead. With 600 meters to go Sherron was more than ten seconds ahead of Centner. But during that final 600 meters, Centner closed that gap. Sherrron prevailed on the homestretch, though, winning 38:57 to 38:59. Rosen was the third woman and nineteenth overall in 39:20. Kristen Palmer was the first woman master and tenth female finisher, 52nd overall in 45:21.

Tristan Cravello and Lucy Baird respond rapidly at the Medical Response Unit 5K

Nobody was forecasting rain in Tallahassee, Florida for Sunday morning, 25 February 2018. So of course it rained that morning on the Florida State University campus during the FSU Medical Response Unit's ninth annual Run For Your Life 5K. Even so, more than 200 athletes showed up for the race, and the fastest of them was first-year FSU student Tristan Cravello, who covered the five-kilometer circuit of the campus in a winning 18:08. Another Florida State University undergraduate, Lucy Baird, won the women's title, placing fourth overall in 19:56.

The light rain started to fall at 9:00 AM, just as the race got started. Brian Prisbe, a 2016 alumnus of the Sante Fe Catholic High track team, took the early lead. Prisbe, however, couldn't escape Tristan Cravello. Cravello had raced at the Trailblazer 5K the day before, but was neverthless right behind Prisbe at 800 meters as the runners crossed Landis Green. Aaron Ostler and Scott Sigrist followed farther back. As the race progressed, Cravello overtook the fading Prisbe. Sigrist, who had already left Ostler behind, passed Prisbe to move into second. Halfway through the 5K, the rain had stopped. With a kilometer to go, Cravello was setting the pace with Sigrist in second, twelve seconds back. Sigrist didn't narrow that margin and Cravello didn't widen it as Cravello ran home to win the race in 18:08. Sigrist, a 2017 alumnus of the Lake Placid High cross-country team, was runner-up in 18:20. Prisbe took third in 19:46, and Ostler was the fourth male finisher and fifth overall in 20:16.

Lucy Baird

Cravello may have raced the day before the Medical Response Unit 5K, but Lucy Baird had run the Tallahassee Marathon three weeks earlier, placing third in the women's division in 3:32:54. Baird, a member of FSU's Seminole Striders Running Club, was recovered enough from the marathon to set the early pace for the women's field in the MRU 5K. At the one-kilometer mark she was a few steps ahead of Taylor Mogavero and 2017 Medical Response Unit 5K women's champion Lauren Aronson at the one-kilometer mark. It didn't stay that close. Baird widened her lead to more than 200 meters, then kicked on the final stretch to break twenty minutes, posting a winning time of 19:56. Mogavero slipped ahead of Aronson to take second in the women's standings and sixth overall in 20:53. Aronson was the third woman and seventh overall in 21:01.

Paula O'Neill was the first master runner in the race and the sixth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 23:42. Michael Magnuson was the first male master, placing nineteenth in the men's standings and 28th overall in 25:10.
