Wyatt Stafford and Brooke Hawkins pluck victory at Monticello's Melon Run

Wyatt Stafford is from Jefferson County, Florida, and the Melon Run 5K is held in the county seat, Monticello. So it's no surprise that Stafford has raced every Melon Run since 2017, even before he took up cross-country at Aucilla Christian Academy. His first sub-20:00 Melon Run was in 2021. Then on Saturday morning, 18 June 2022, nineteen-year-old Stafford won the 43rd annual Monticello Kiwanis 5K Melon Run, racing the 3.1 miles in 17:51. Another nineteen-year-old, Brooke Hawkins, was the first woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 22:44.

Stafford's 17:51 put him more than 200 meters ahead of the next runner in the field. Behind him, Daniel Cook edged Mickey Moore for the runner-up spot, 18:42 to 18:48. Moore was the first master runner in the race. Cadden Maxwell, a rising sophomore on the Leon High cross-country team, finished fourth in 19:22.

Stacie Taylor was runner-up to Hawkins in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 23:57. Nancy Stedman was the first woman master in the race and the third female finisher, 22nd overall in 24:24.

151 athletes finished the Monticello Kiwanis' 2022 Melon Run 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Wyatt Stafford and Alison Wells were the talk of the Shamrock

2022 Shamrock ScurryUp through the fall of 2020, much of Wyatt Stafford's racing efforts at 5,000-meter came while competing in cross country for Aucilla Christian Academy. Stafford also made annual appearances in Monticello, Florida's hometown road race, the Kiwanis Melon Run 5K. On Saturday morning, 5 March 2022, the Aucilla Christian alum expanded his resume to include Killearn Estates' hometown road race, the Shamrock Scurry 5K. Stafford won the 33rd annual Scurry, racing the hilly 3.1 miles in 18:01. Alison Wells crossed the finish line half a minute later, winning the women's division in 18:36--the best mark by a woman at the Scurry since 2008.

Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the race; the Tallahassee athlete finished second overall in 18:13. Peter Failma, an alum of the Chiles High cross-country team, took third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 18:33.

Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master in the 5K, running 21:14 to place second in the women's standings and 22nd overall. Liles-Weyant had also been the first woman master at the Shamrock Scurry in 2017. Andi Vilardo, a seventh-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country squad, was third in the women's division and 36th overall in 22:49. Vilardo's time bettered her three earlier appearances in the Shamrock Scurry 5K, well under her previous best showing of 26:50 in the 2020 race.

383 athletes finished the 2022 Shamrock Scurry 5K, and another 122 completed the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the races.
