Piotrowski and Jackson have the most fun at Bradley's 5K

Joel PiotrowskiI won't say that Bradley's Store Country Fun Days is the worst time to get a sausage dog, because I'm a member of the cult that believes that there isn't a bad time for a sausage dog. Let's just say that the Country Fun Days festival is the least convenient time to get a sausage dog. Instead of the usual core group of sausage dog lovers, thousands who ordinarily have no interest in smoked sausage descend on Bradley's Country Store during the festival. Since 2009, those hordes have included the athletes in the Marzuq Shrine's Bradley's Country Fun Days 5K.

There were 83 in that group of runners on 19 November 2011, led by Tallahassee master runner Joel Piotrowski. Piotrowski crossed the finish line of the 3.1-mile race in 18:00, just a step or two ahead of the 18:03 posted by runner-up Hunter Scott of the Lincoln High School cross-country team. Cole Tessier, the defending champion in the race, was third in 19:03.

Eleven-year-old Grace Jackson, a middle-school cross-country runner at Cornerstone Learning Community, was the first female finisher in the 5K, placing 17th overall in 23:27. A few seconds back in 23:33, Sandra Canada was the second woman finisher and first woman master, taking 18th overall.

Corbin and Rosen weren't talking trash

Bag Man"It looks like Michael Jackson in 'The Wiz,'" said Gordon Cherr.

It reminded me of the Heap, from the pages of 1950s comic books. It actually was a man dressed in a few thousand shopping bags that waved and rustled as he walked--part of America Recycles Day, 19 November 2011, at the Leon County Solid Waste Facility in Apalachee Regional Park. Another part of the festivities was the Trash Dash 5K.

Brian CorbinThe Trash Dash 5K started at 8:30am, following an 8:00am one-mile fun run. The runners started by heading east on a road over the old landfill--one of the few times a local road race had absolutely no traffic. The early pacesetter was Dustin Rhodes, champion of the Sgt. Dale Green Memorial 5K just seven days earlier. After a kilometer of racing, Rhodes was ten seconds ahead of Elijah Ingram, with master runners Brian Corbin and Mike LaBossiere another six seconds back. During the second kilometer Rhodes continued to hold the lead while Corbin dropped LaBossiere and caught up with Ingram. By the end of the third kilometer Ingram had fallen back to third and Corbin was threatening to overtake Rhodes. Corbin moved past Rhodes into first during the fourth kilometer. Rhodes never gave up, but he never caught Corbin, either. Corbin went on to win in 17:53, while Rhodes was second in 17:58. LaBossiere caught Ingram about the four kilometer mark and went on to finish third in 18:43; Ingram settled for fourth in 19:26.

Sheryl RosenAbout one kilometer into the race, Sheryl Rosen was leading the women, close to ten seconds ahead of Jamie Nikas. For the next four kilometers the only thing that changed was the size of Rosen's lead, which steadily grew. The Tallahassee lawyer crossed the finish line ninth overall in 21:29, more than 300 meters ahead of Nikas's 22:59. Jenn Bacile was the third woman, placing 19th overall in 24:16. Following Bacile across the line was Birgit Maier-Katkin (20th, 24:24), the first woman master.

Trash HillsVariety is the one word that summarizes the course. There was pavement, grass, and dirt roads; industrial looking landscapes and pristine woods. Some of the best scenery along the route was grassy hills that looked like the downs in England--but were actually vast heaps of household waste covered over with dirt and planted with grass. Only a ventilation pipe here and there betrayed what was below the ground. A few pipes were aflame as methane from below burned. Even though it was all right next to the Apalachee Park Trail, the course was one that not many runners will see again. At least not until the second annual Trash Dash.

Rhodes and Bacile lead the salute to Sgt. Green

Dustin Rhodes finished at the front of a field of 81 athletes in the 12 November 2011 running of the inaugural Sgt. Dale Green Memorial 5K in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park. Rhodes put up a time of 20:55 for the race, over a minute ahead of the runner-up, master runner Michael Mills. Tallahassee's Jenn Bacile was the first female finisher, placing 13th overall in 28:49.

The race was run chiefly on the Goose Pond Trail in Tom Brown Park on a course that was probably a bit longer than 5K. Rhodes, for instance, had run more than a minute faster the day before in the Veteran's Day 5K--and altho' it's true that he wouldn't have been fresh on the second day of racing, it's also true that the Goose Pond Trail is almost flat compared to the savage hills of downtown Tallahassee that were included in the Veteran's Day 5K. But you don't know what you're getting when a course isn't USATF certified.

The race was part of the Sgt. Dale Green Memorial Weekend. Green was a thirteen-year veteran of the Tallahassee Police Department who was killed in the line of duty in 2002. All proceeds from the weekends events went to support the Sgt. Dale Green Memorial Scholarship.

Veteran's Day victories for Smyth and Holt

Veteran's Day 5KThe 5K was not the first Veteran's Day road race in Tallahassee, but it was the first in many years. It was also the first to be run downtown, which is why no one seemed to be able to describe the course without using some form of the word "hill." So at 8:00am on Monday morning, 14 November 2011, 168 runners set out down Calhoun Street near the Vietnam War Memorial, turned down Gaines past the Korean War Memorial, then raced down Suwannee to start climbing Lafayette Street toward the Myers Park neighborhood. After half a mile of racing, a group of four runners led the field on the ascent of Lafayette--Peter Wood, Alex Smyth, Colin Riley, and Javier Zamparelli. Lincoln High sophomore trailed them in fifth, and Gary Droze was in sixth--back on the roads after a win the day before in the FSECC 5K.

Sandy Holt
Smyth took over the race in the Myers Park area, then cruised to the Park Avenue finish line in 16:20. Wood was runner-up in 16:30. Riley and Zamparelli raced together to the very end, where Riley took third by inches, 16:48 to 16:49. Droze moved up into fifth to finish as the first master runner in 18:27. A former USAF officer, Droze was also the first veteran in the race. Sandy Holt was the first woman across the finish line, placing 15th overall in 22:50. Kate Blankemeyer ran 26:12 to take female master honors.

Mosier and Jenkins capture FSUCares kudos

Dan Mosier"You're not going to write that the course was short, are you?" asked Bobby York.

I hadn't planned on it, until he mentioned it. The FSUCares 5K course, like so many of the courses on the Florida State University campus, isn't USATF certified, and the FSU police are always waving the runners out of the street and onto the sidewalks, so I don't assume a great deal of accuracy. Nevertheless, more than a few runners were pointing at the GPS units on their wrists, and citing figures like 2.99 miles or other numbers short of 3.1. No word yet from the man who set out to measure the course with a ball of yarn.

Charlie SanabriaLong or short, certified or not, on Sunday morning, 13 November 2011, Dan Mosier ran the course in 16:52, faster than the 167 other runners in the race. Mosier led the entire way, finishing the race more than 250 meters ahead of runner-up Charlie Sanabria, who finished in 17:51. Closing on second, Pat Biel was third in 17:56. At 18:30 Mike LaBossiere was the fourth finisher and the first master runner.

Chloe JenkinsFSU med student Chloe Jenkins, winner of the previous month's ZTA Race To Live 5K, added another women's title to her resume, placing sixth overall in 18:46. Jenkins finished over half a kilometer ahead of women's runner-up Joanna Meadors (19th, 21:36). Robin Borschel (26th, 22:30).

The race is an annual production of FSUCares, a medical student organization dedicated to bringing health care to the needy both here and abroad. Appropriately enough the event started and finished at the FSU College of Medicine. Although the run was staged on its traditional date of the Sunday before Florida State's homecoming, unlike previous years the start was in the morning rather than the afternoon.

Drouin the class of the classic in Bainbridge

In the Bainbridge YMCA's Veteran's Day Classic 10K on 12 November 2011, three women from Florida State University took three of the four top spots in the race including first. Jackie Drouin put the hammer down to record a 35:46 for the win, Astrid Leutert was second in 36:10, and Jennifer Dunn grabbed fourth with a 37:18. Mark McLeod of South Georgia College was the only runner to crack the female monopoly on the top four spots, placing third in 37:07. Tallahassee's David Yon was the fastest master finisher, fifteenth overall in 41:32. 20th overall in 46:14, Paula O'Neill of Tallahassee was the first female master.

Atrid LeutertSunlight glistened on frosty roofs the morning of the race. The runners started by circling the Bainbridge College perimeter road. About one kilometer into the 10K, the leaders missed a turn, and Keith Gates and Michael Kennett found themselves briefly out front as the fastest runners who actually knew the course. The field sorted itself out again, and at the halfway point Florida State University runners Jackie Drouin and Astrid Leutert were leading, a replay of their duel two months earlier at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. Mark McLeod of South Georgia College followed them in third, with Chase Harris of Bainbridge's Grace Christian Academy in fourth.

Drouin broke away from Leutert on the sixth kilometer, then ran home for a 35:46 win. Leutert held on to the runner-up spot in 36:10. Mark McLeod was third in 37:07. Behind him but closing in was Florida State's Jennifer Dunn. Dunn passed Harris on the return trip to Bainbridge College, but never quite caught McLeod. She placed fourth in 37:18. Harris was fifth in 37:46.

Neither Droze nor Liles show charity in FSECC 5K wins

Gary DrozeIn a Thursday morning dash around Tallahassee's Southwood community on Nov. 10, Gary Droze finished ahead of a field of 550, winning the 2011 Florida State Employees' Charitable Campaign 5K. The Maclay School cross-country coach covered the course in 16:46, finishing nearly 200m ahead of the runner-up and defending champion, Matt Dobson of Jay, Florida. Master runners swept the top three spots, with Tallahassee's Mike Martinez running 17:46 for third. Brian Manry of Capital City Runners was the first non-master finisher, placing fourth in 18:06.

Stephanie LilesStephanie Liles still has a few more years before qualifying as a master runner, but she was the fastest woman in the 2011 FSECC 5K. Liles finished eighth overall in 19:50, close to half a kilometer ahead of the second woman, Kim Curran (20th, 22:29). The top woman master in the field was Diane Caldwell, who turned the course in 24:59.

The race started on Esplanade Way. After a turn onto Merchants Row Boulevard, Droze led the field up a hill toward the Southwood Town Center, closely shadowed by Dobson. Brian Manry, Peter Kaus, and Michael Martinez followed. About one kilometer into the race, as the runners passed through the Southwood Town Center, Droze opened a gap. By the end of the second kilometer the race was his, and Dobson was running for second place. Behind the two leaders, Martinez overtook Kaus early in the second half of the race to move into fourth, and then caught Manry to grab third.

The FSECC 5K has been around for quite a few years as part of the state workers' United Way campaign, but this was only the second year that the race was staged in the morning rather than the afternoon. 550 finishers in 2011 is down from 2010's total of 750, but it's still one of the largest races in Tallahassee.
