Molosky and Griffis tear up the trails at Tom Brown

In the ten-year history of the Tails & Trails, the event hasn't always include a 10K. But when it has Vince Molosky has always won it. Even going back to 2006 when it was still called the "Furry Scurry," Molosky came away with the 10K title. 2011 was no different with Molosky running 36:41 to win the 10K at the 10th annual Tails & Trails on 30 April 2011. Behind him on the trails of Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park and Lafayette Heritage Park, Brian Manry was runner-up in 37:11, followed by Peter Kaus at 38:22. Tony Guillen placed fourth in 38:41, taking top master honors ahead of Jack McDermott (5th, 39:14).

Heather Griffis didn't have Molosky's history at the Tails & Trails, but she still won the women's division of the trail 10K handily in 41:06, the fastest time ever run by a woman at the event. The runner-up, Ocala's Kate Hoyt, was half a kilometer back in 43:23. Carroll Hageseth improved on her 2010 time in the race by nearly a minute and a half to run 50:29 and take the first women's master spot.

Three-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan already had the race under control when the uphill started; he went on to win in 17:04. Tallahassee's Christopher Coutts placed second in 17:32. Jay Wallace was the top master, finishing fourth in 18:12.

In the women's race Seeley Gutierrez was leading when the final climb to the finish started, but Kelly Stevens was right behind her. Kent and Howell hit the trail at Brian Dowling 5K

Of all the many Dothan, Alabama races run on the Larry and Rona Dykes Trail in Westgate Park, the senior event is the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K, which has been held since at least, well, a few years ago, anyway. At the 2011 edition of the race on Saturday, April 23, Northview High's Sean Kent took time out from his track season to loop the park in a winning 18:50, finishing half a minute ahead of runner-up Brad Wood (19:21). Theron Carter, the defending champion, was third overall in 19:28. Howell was also the first master finisher, crossing the finish line over a minute ahead of the next master runner, Dale Thomas (4th, 20:34).

Less than two weeks after a 99:21 performance at the Gulf Coast Half Marathon, Megan Howell of Daleville was on the trail in Westgate winning the women's division in the Brian Dowling 5K. Howell ran 20:46, placing fifth overall. Behind Howell, Dana Cody (8th, 21:03) was the women's runner-up. Fort Rucker's Melissa Unrath, the 2011 Winston Howell 10K champion, ran 21:45 to place13th overall as the third woman and first woman master.

The Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Run is an annual event of the Dothan Runners Club, which conducts the race as a benefit for the Wiregrass Humane Society.

Tracking down the area's 10K road races

Back in the second half of the 1970s when running was really getting a grip in this area, the staple of road racing was the ten-kilometer event. Every village and hamlet was hosting a road race, and most of them were 10K. Some are still around, like Thomasville's Rose City Run 10K, but many are gone. Whigham's Rattlesnake Round-Up 10K, Climax's Swine Time 10K, and Cavalry's Mule Day 10K have all disappeared. For sheer irony my favorite was the Pelham Gold Leaf Tobacco 10K, but it has faded off into history with the rest of them.

There are probably more road races than ever, but most of them are 5K events. For a variety of reasons, 5K races are easier to produce than longer runs. They're also the lowest common denominator of road racing; the director has a better chance at drawing a large crowd by putting on a race that most runners have the training to tackle. Of course, you probably aren't going to travel to a 5K, because there are probably three of them in your own home town on the same day.

Prompted by Michael Kennett's queries about 10K races in the area, I decided to do a census of the ten-kilometer events in the Trouble Afoot! region (i.e., 100 miles or less from Tallahassee). It turns out that there are still quite a few left, some of them very fine races. There are longer races out there, too, but they were never very numerous--there are probably just as many half-marathons in the region as there ever were, if not more. But just as vast herds of buffalo once darkened the plains, ten-kilometer road races once dominated the racing schedule. Just as you might go to a national park or a petting zoo to see the last of the bison, I thought it was worth while to track down the remaining 10K races. I've tried to be thorough, but I may have missed a few. If I've left your favorite off the list, please let me know.

Lake and Garcia go for two at Rose City

It was a day for repeat winners at the 34th annual Rose City Run in Thomasville, Georgia on 23 April 2011. 2010 champion Chris Lake successfully defended his title, finishing four minutes ahead of his competition in 32:46. Meanwhile, 2008 women's champion Donna Garcia returned to Thomasville to run 38:58 for her second win in southwest Georgia's oldest road race.

The morning started with Thomasville shrouded in fog. But any protection from the sun offered by the clouds had disappeared by 8:00 am and race time, promising a hot time during the middle miles on treeless Pinetree Boulevard. Soon after the start Chris Lake was leading. He passed the first mile of the 6.2-mile race in 5:08, by which time the rest of the field was barely visible in the distance behind him. Lake only got farther ahead as the race progressed, crossing the finish line over four minutes before Pauncho Hufstetler of Bainbridge, Georgia, who finished runner-up in 36:59. The win was not only Lake's third straight race title in the month of April, but also his third straight title defense--in going "three-for-April," Lake had also successfully defended titles at the Springtime 10K and the Palace Saloon 5K. The Rose City Run's top master spot went to Kevin Sweeny, who placed fifth overall in 38:53.

Lake ended his race over a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, but the women's race was considerably closer. Marietta's Donna Garcia, a US Olympic trials qualifier as recently as 2000, edged out Tallahassee's Sheryl Rosen for the title, 38:58 to 39:06. Rosen duplicated exactly her 2010 Rose City performance--second place, 39:06. Garcia, the Georgia state record-holder for her age group in the 10K, was also the top woman master in the race. At 42:15 Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson was the third woman finisher and the second woman master.

Richardson, Palumbo twilight winners at IMPACT 5K

In a Friday evening race, Jeremy Richardson took off ahead of nearly a hundred other runners and was never challenged for the lead en route to a 18:23 win at the IMPACT 5K. Jeff Armstrong, the runner up, was over a minute behind Richardson at 19:25, and third-place Nathan Adams another minute-and-a-half back at 20:56. Bill McGuire turned in a 21:27 to finish as the first master runner, placing fourth overall. In the women's competition, Hillary Palumbo was as dominating as Richardson had been among the men. Palumbo, a Florida State University School track coach, ran 22:53 to take the top women's spot and placing ninth overall. The next woman in after Palumbo was Alexandria Smith (13th, 23:45). Lynn Panton was the fastest woman master and the sixth woman to cross the finish line, placing 19th overall in 24:55.

The inaugural IMPACT 5K was hosted by the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic Foundation as a benefit for their Concussion Management Programs. The race was held on the Tallahassee Community College campus on the same course as the annual Run For The Cookies 5K (USATF FL08011EBM). The 6:30 pm 5K was preceded by a 6:00 pm one-mile fun run.

Lake grabs his second Palace win, Zeiler her first

Chris Lake powered up the Jackson Bluff Road hill, shedding his pursuers and going on to win his second straight title at Tallahassee's 37th annual Palace Saloon 5K on Saturday morning, 16 April 2011. Lake covered the course in 15:48, becoming the first to win back-to-back men's titles in the race since Gary Droze in 1996 and 1997. While Lake was racing to victory, former Southeast Missouri Redhawk distance runner Lindsay Zeiler was putting together a strong last mile to win the Palace Saloon 5K women's championship in 18:24.

The race started from Tallahassee Community College, marking the first time since 1975 that the Palace Saloon 5K didn't start from Messer Park. Early in the morning it looked like the race might not start at all, as powerful electrical storms accompanied by a tornado watch swept through Tallahassee. But the rain had stopped by 7:00 am, and much of the cloud cover had drifted away by 7:30. When the starting siren sounded after 8:00, the storms were just a bad memory.

Lake led early, closely followed up Appleyard Drive by Marc Akbar, Tripp Southerland, and Ryan Sloan. Sloan had fallen off the pace by the end of the third kilometer, but Akbar and Southerland were still in striking range of Lake. But the end of the fourth kilometer is marked by a long climb on Jackson Bluff Road, and Lake was too strong on the uphill for Akbar and Southerland. From the crest of the hill you can see the Palace Saloon and the finish line, and Lake cruised downhill to victory in 15:48. Akbar beat out Southerland for the runner-up spot, 15:57 to 16:03, while Nate Kaiser (16:18) overtook Ryan Sloan (16:22) for fourth.

Lauren Poulos set the early pace for the women, but two-time Palace champ Lisa Johnson was never far behind--and neither was Lindsay Zeiler. Johnson soon took over the lead, and then Zeiler passed Poulos during the third kilometer to move into second. As with the men's race, Jackson Bluff Road and its hill was where the women's race turned. Zeiler went by Johnson and built up a commanding lead, arriving at the Palace Saloon at 18:24 to take the women's title. Johnson stumbled across the line runner-up in 18:43. Poulos was third, holding off Sheryl Rosen 19:01 to 19:05.

Michael Martinez (17th, 17:51) defeated Tony Guillen (23rd, 18:04) to take the master runner title. The fastest woman master of the morning was Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson (62nd, 20:17); it was Grayson's third straight master win at the Palace Saloon 5K. After Grayson the next woman master runner was Julie Clark (93rd, 21:38). Grayson and Clark were respectively the ninth and eleventh women to finish the race.

Many of the entries didn't show up Saturday morning, perhaps because of the weather. Still, 1064 runners finished the 2011 Palace Saloon 5K, the third straight year that over 1000 completed the race. Only in 2010 did more runners cross the finish line at the Palace. It was also the largest race in Tallahassee so far in 2011, exceeding both the Springtime 10K (934) and the Springtime 5K (731).
