Running practically alone on the streets of Palm Coast, Florida, Ani Veltcheva won the third annual Superhero 5K in 17:35--the fastest time ever recorded at that race. Another Gainesville runner, Rich Smith, was the first male finisher in the 5K, placing second overall in 18:39. 285 athletes finished the race.A seventh-grader at Gainesville, Florida's Abraham Lincoln Middle School, Veltcheva had already run 17:35 at the Run For The Cookies 5K in Tallahassee on 11 February 2017 and 17:34 at the Five Points Of Life 5K on 25 February 2017. However, she had other runners to chase at those earlier races. In Palm Coast, Veltcheva finished nearly 300 meters ahead of the next runner. The 17:35 at the Superhero 5K was a solo effort.
In a battle of two Palm Coast athletes, Tyler Boyle edged Jose Musso for third place overall, 18:55 to 18:57. Boyle was second in the men's standings and Musso was the top master runner in the race.
Arien Striplin of Palm Coast was runner-up on the women's side, placing tenth overall in 20:43. Sue Abrahamson of Wayzata, Minnesota was the top woman master and third female finisher, twelfth overall in 21:19.
Proceeds of the Superhero 5K benefit the non-profit Palm Coast Community Child Center. RaceSmith, Inc., of Saint Augustine, Florida chip-timed the race and measured the course for USATF certification.
