Lewis and Spry capture the Kiwanis 5K

If the Road Runners Club of America, USA Track & Field, and the United States Olympic Committee were to all vanish, a lot of events would disappear with them. The Nation would still have a fairly complete set of track and field meets and road races, though, as long as the Kiwanis Clubs were still around. It's a race town in America without a race put on by the local Kiwanis. Adel, Georgia may be a modest-sized municipality, but it has its own annual Kiwanis 5K road race.


On Saturday morning, 4 March 2017, John Lewis won that year's edition of the Adel Kiwanis 5K, edging defending champ Dan Butzin 20:15 to 20:21. Both athletes hail from Valdosta, Georgia as does Vanessa Spry, who won the women's title in 23:18, placing third overall. Valdosta's Lauren Bewley was runner-up in the women's standings for the second year in a row, this time placing fifth overall in 23:35.


Billy Taylor of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing fourth overall in 23:27. Valdosta's Amy Reese was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing eleventh overall 27:54.


27 athletes finished the 2017 Adel Kiwanis 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
