House and Spry were the athletic upper crust of the Bun Run

On 22 July 2017, Brishen House was a few weeks away from beginning his senior year at Lowndes High, where he's a standout on the school's cross-country team. However, House isn't waiting till cross-country season to race. Instead, that Saturday morning House was on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia, winning the eighth annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K in 18:55. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing fourteenth overall in 22:58.


Placing second to House was another high school cross-country runner, Berrien County sophomore Morgan Bolmer. Seventh in the 2016 Bun Run, in the 2017 race Bolmer ran 19:05 to finish just over 40 meters behind the winner. Another 40 meters back, Valdosta High cross-country coach Ryan Kelly, the Bun Run champion in 2013 and 2014, was third overall in 19:16. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing eleventh overall in 21:46.


Valdosta athlete Kelly Davis was second in the women's standings and seventeenth overall in 23:33. Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the top woman master and third female finisher, 28th overall in 25:11.


87 athletes finished the 2017 Break Bread Bun Run 5K, the most in the eight-year history of the race. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line management services.
