Alec Munger and Sandra Griffin take the cake at the Bun Run

For distance runners, the mantra in July is, "Get Ready For Cross-Country Season." On Saturday morning, 20 July 2019, Lowndes High rising junior Alec Munger showed that if he isn't ready for cross-country, he is well along in his preparations. That morning, Munger won the tenth annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K in Valdosta, Georgia by more than 300 meters, running 17:51. Valdosta master runner Sandra Griffin was the first woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 22:53.


It was Munger's second straight Bun Run win and nearly a minute faster than his winning time in the 2018 race. Fourteen-year-old Aaron Munger took the runner-up spot in the 5K, running 19:03. An incoming frosh at Lowndes High, Aaron will be joining his brother Alec on Viking cross-country team. A few steps behind the younger Munger, a pair of master runners battled for third, Myles Gibson and Ryan Kelly. Kelly, from Lake Park, Georgia, had won the Bun Run in 2013 and 2014, as well as finishing ahead of Gibson in the 2018 race. Kelly had also outrun Gibson a week earlier to win the eleventh annual Barnes 5K. This time out, though, Gibson won their duel. The Donalsonville, Georgia athlete went 19:0-8 to take third place and the top master spot with a 19:08. Kelly was fourth in 19:19.


Alexandra Sayre, a rising senior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, took second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 23:14. Sayre had also been the women's runner-up in the 2018 Bun Run. Another rising senior, Valdosta High harrier Katelyn Lancaster, was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 24:43. Master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz, a Lowndes High cross-country coach, was the fourth female finisher and eighteenth overall in 25:00.


76 athletes finished the 2019 Break Bread Bun Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
