Blazer harrier Adam Mastrobuono sets a new Break Bread Bun Run record

So, what do you do when you're competing in a road race, and you find yourself facing the defending champion and course record holder?


That was the Adam Mastrobuono's situation at the twelfth annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K in Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday morning, 10 June 2023. Mastrobuono was on the starting line with Isaac Chambers, a rising senior on the Lowndes High cross-country squad. Chambers had won the 2022 race in a course-record 17:36. Mastrobuono, however, was also a cross-country runner, with a spot on the Valdosta State University Blazer varsity squad and years of experience racing for Daytona State College and Hagerty High. And the Blazer met the challenge by breaking Chambers' record, throwing down a winning 17:13. Yet another cross-country runner, Cook High frosh Stella McClain, was the first woman in the Break Break Bun Run, going 23:36 for fifteenth overall.


2022 winner Chambers grabbed the runner-up spot with a 17:58. Patrick Wallace, a Valdosta High sophomore cross-country runner, placed third in 18:10. Ryan Kelly, the Valosta High cross-country coach and two-time Bun Run champion, was the first master runner in the race, coming in eighth overall in 21:07.


Not far behind Stella McClain, Kelly Lunceford of Valdosta was the second woman and nineteenth overall in 23:45. Twelve-year-old Hahira athlete Lydia Chambers was third in the women's standings and 26th overall in 28:16. Valdosta's Martha Mazurkiewicz was the first woman master in the race, the fourth female finisher and 27th overall in 28:23.


70 athletes finished the 2023 Break Bread Bun Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
