High school cross-country standouts Norman and Tabb win Joyce's Jog

At the annual Joyce's Jog 5K, it's no longer unusual for high school cross-country runners to sweep the top places. In fact, it's getting to be routine. In 2015 Dustin Reynolds of Seminole County High won the men's title in the Donalsonville, Georgia road race, while Macy Williams of Seminole County was first in the women's standings. In 2016 Reynolds repeated as men's champ and Seminole County's Masey Tabb took the women's title. So it couldn't have been surprising that on Saturday morning, 21 October 2017, high school athletes once again came up winners at the eleventh annual Joyce's Jog. Early County High senior Tanner Norman was the first overall male, running 18:40 on the streets of Donalsonville. Seminole County sophomore Masey Tabb successfully defended her women's title, placing seventeenth overall in 22:48.


Norman had finished second in the race in 2016. He and Tabb weren't the only preps at the top of the results in 2017. Garrett Taylor, a Seminole County High sophomore, placed second overall in 18:53. Payton Price, another Seminole County sophomore, was third in 19:51. Early County frosh Rand McDonald was fourth in 20:07, and Seminole County junior Aubrey Johnson was fifth in 20:31. There were some more seasoned athletes in the race, though. Mark McCarra was the top master runner in the 5K, placing eighth overall in 21:38.


Close behind Masey Tabb, Southwest Georgia Academy frosh Katie Sheppard was second in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 22:54. Mary Hunt was the third woman and 26th overall in 24:30. Margaret Winkler of Blakely, Georgia was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 28th overall in 25:05. Winkler had been the women's champ of the Joyce's Jog in 2013 and 2014 and the top woman master in 2015.


97 athletes finished the 2017 Joyce's Jog 5K. The race is always held on the third Saturday in October, so expect the twelfth annual Joyce's Jog on 20 October 2018.

Norman and Johnson show what they're made of at the Gut Run

In 2013, 2014, and 2016 Dothan, Alabama's Gut Run offered a 10K race. At the 18 March 2017 edition of the Gut Run, though, the longest event on the program was five kilometers. Of the athletes who chose to compete in the 5K that Saturday morning, Tanner Norman was the fastest. Norman, a junior on the cross-country team of Early County High in Blakely, Georgia, won the race by more than half a kilometer, running 19:24. Jo Johnson was first in the women's competition, placing eighth overall in 26:31. 41 athletes finished the race.


Dale Thomas, the Gut Run 5K champion in 2013 and 2014, was the top master, placing second overall behind Norman in 21:40. Trevor Shaw, a frosh on the Dothan High cross-country squad, was third overall in 21:49.


Bheind Jo Johnson, Jana Sledge edged Susan Broyles for the second spot in the women's standings, 26:43 to 26:45. Sledge and Broyles placed ninth and tenth overall. Broyles was also the first woman master in the Gut Run.


Hosted by Digestive Health Specialists annually since 2012, the Gut Run's mission is to raise awareness and funds in the fight against colorectal cancer for the people in the Wiregrass region. Proceeds of the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

Gibson and O'Neill were the rapids at this River Run

In 2016 the Bainbridge, Georgia Kiwanis River Run 10K got a new date. The race had been scheduled for January, but the Flint River, from which the race takes its name, was in flood stage and the course was under water. So the event moved to February. Although the river behaved itself in 2017, the race remained in February. And although there was a new course for the thirteenth annual 10K, the winner was the same as in 2016. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson won the Kiwanis River Run 10K for the second year in a row on Saturday morning, 25 February 2017, running 39:04. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Paula O'Neill took the women's title, placing third overall in 48:10.


It was the third Kiwanis River Run 10K title for Gibson, who also won the event in 2013. In the 2017 race no one else had gone more than eight kilometers before Gibson finished the ten-kilometer run. Mark Tombrink took the runner-up spot in 47:59. Behind O'Neill, Michael Marchman edged Dale Nash for fourth, 49:29 to 49:35.


Run concurrently, the Kiwanis River Run 5K also got a new course for 2017. Tanner Norman, a junior on the Early County High cross-country team, inaugurated the new 3.1-mile course with a winning 18:42. Trevor Cleveland, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second in 19:15. Ramsay Miller outkicked Lance Wilson for third place in the 5K, 22:50 to 22:51. Also a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, Miller was the first woman in the race.


41 athletes finished the 2017 Bainbridge Kiwanis River Run 10K. Another 35 completed the 5K.

Ainsworth repeats and Reynolds wins at the SACF Half Marathon

On a frosty Saturday morning, 28 January 2017, Avery Ainsworth won Dothan's sixth annual Southeast Alabama Community Foundation Half Marathon, first in a field of 104 finishers. It was not only the second year in a row that Ainsworth had won the 13.1-mile race, it was also the second straight year that the Montgomery, Alabama athlete set a new course record. Ainsworth traversed the course in 1:14:50, trimming exactly one minute off the mark he established in 2016. Jae Reynolds of Anadalusia, Alabama took the women's title, placing overall in 1:39:20.


Behind Ainsworth's record-setting 1:14:50, Richard Ford was second in 1:26:18. Alex Swanson placed third in 1:32:13, and Enterprise High sophomore cross-country runner Josh Crawford grabbed fourth with a 1:34:44.


Edna Keene was the women's runner-up, placing tenth overall in 1:43:40. Kathy Gannon was the top master and third female finisher in the half marathon, placing eleventh overall in 1:44:15.


David Anderson was the first male master and fourteenth overall in 1:45:40.

Another 101 athletes finished a 5K race contested during the half marathon. Tanner Norman, a junior on the Early County High cross-country team, won the 3.1-mile event, running 18:20. Fawad Safi was second in 18:31, and Houston Academy sophomore Chris Tamburin placed third in 20:05.


Jackie Birge was the first woman in the shorter race, and seventh overall in 22:00. Dothan master runner Carolyn Houston was the second female finisher and twelfth overall in 23:22. In a match of two more master runners, Mary Lise Patterson edged Loretta Shapiro for third, 24:39 to 24:45. Patterson and Shapiro finished eighteenth and nineteenth overall.
