Local favorites in the 2011 World Championships

Daegu 2011The next time you're humbled in a local road races, you might allow yourself to reflect that this area is quite a center of athletics. The land and the climate are ideal for training, and more than a few people have taken advantage of it over the years. If you still have doubts, consider the upcoming 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea. No less than eleven athletes who came through Florida State University will be competing for titles there: Jonathan Borlée, Kevin Borlée, Walter Dix, Hannah England, Lacy Janson, Andrew Lemoncello, Ciarán ó Lionáird, Ngonidzashe Makusha, Maurice Mitchell, Barbara Parker, and Kim Williams. A twelfth Seminole, Dorian Scott, was slated to compete for Jamaica in the men's shotput at Daegu, but withdrew from the championships.

Here are the eleven athletes whose road to Daegu took them through Tallahassee:

SarbiJonathan Borlée
Jonathan Borlée will be competing for Belgium in the 400 and in the 4 x 400 relay, the same events he ran at the 2008 (Beijing) Olympic Games and the 2009 (Berlin) World Championships. In Beijing he was part of the relay team that set the national record of 2:59.37 in the 4 x 400 relay. While competing for the Seminoles at the 2009 NCAA Championships, Jonathan won the 400 in a Belgian national record time of 44.78, and was part of FSU's winning 4 x 400 relay with his brother Kevin. In 2010 Jonathan further lowered the Belgian national standard in the 400 to 44.71.

Kevin Borlée
Kevin Borlée will be competing for Belgium in the 400 and in the 4 x 400 relay, the same events he ran at the 2008 (Beijing) Olympic Games and the 2009 (Berlin) World Championships. In Beijing he set a Belgian national record of 44.88 in the 400 and was part of the relay team that set the national record of 2:59.37 in the 4 x 400 relay. Kevin scored for the Seminoles at the 2009 NCAA Championships, finishing fourth in the 400 and competing on FSU's winning 4 x 400 relay.

Walter Dix
Walter Dix will be running in the United States' colors in the 100, the 200, and the 4 x 100 relay. Competing for Florida State from 2004 till his graduation in 2008, Dix was a big part of the Seminoles' three NCAA outdoor track championships in 2006, 2007, and 2008 (Florida State has since vacated the 2007 title). Dix won six NCAA outdoor titles in the four seasons from 2005 to 2008; three in the 200, two in the 100, and one in the 4 x 100. After graduating from FSU in 2008, Dix qualified for the United States Olympic team. At the 2008 (Beijing) Olympics Dix won bronze medals in the 100 (9.91) and the 200 (19.98). Daegu will be his first time competing in a World Championship.

Hannah England
Hannah England will be one of three Seminole alumni competing on Great Britain's team. She's entered in the women's 1500, an event that she won for the Seminoles at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships, running a school record 4:06.19. England is going into the 1500 with a qualifying time of 4:01.89, her career best.
Great Britain, 1500m

Lacy Janson
Lacy Janson (c/o 2006) will compete on the United States team in the women's pole vault. She enters the competition with a season best mark of 4.55 meters, or 14' 11" for those of us who still measure distances in furlongs and lengths in barleycorns. This is Janson's first world championship, but she was the bronze medalist in the pole vault at the World Junior Championship in 2002, and won the NCAA women's indoor title in the pole vault in 2003 and the outdoor title in the same event in 2006.

Andrew Lemoncello
Andrew Lemoncello, the fastest 10,000 runner in Seminole history, will be running the marathon for Great Britain. The Seminole from Scotland previously competed for Great Britain at the 2005 (Helsinki) World Championships in the 3000 steeplechase, at the 2007 (Osaka) World Championships in the 10,000, and the 2008 (Beijing) Olympics in the 3000 steeplechase. He ran his first marathon last year, running 2:13:40 to place eighth at the 2010 London Marathon. Lemoncello's qualifying time for Daegu is 2:15:24.

Ciarán ó Lionáird
O'Lionáird arrived in Tallahassee last year battling possibly career-ending back trouble. He overcame the injury through therapy in time to lead the Seminoles to a runner-up finish in the 2010 NCAA cross-country championships, Florida State's best-ever showing in that sport. After outdoor season in the spring, where he ran the 5000 and 10000 for the Seminoles, O'Lionáird returned home to Europe. There, he had a breakthrough summer in the middle distances, first turning a 3:57.99 mile in Dublin and then pounding out a 3:34.46 1500 in Oordegem. The latter performance qualified him for Daegu, where O'Lionáird will be running the 1500 for Ireland in his first world championship.

Ngonidzashe Makusha
For his 2011 season alone, Ngoni Makusha may be the most decorated athlete in Seminole track-and-field history. After winning the long jump indoors, Makusha headed outdoors where he won NCAA titles in the 100 (setting a 9.89 NCAA record) and the long jump while also showing amazing dexterity with the relay baton while running on the Seminoles' championship 4 x 100. In recognition of his accomplishments, the Atlantic Coast Conference named Makusha its Athlete of the Year, and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association voted him 2011 men's track athlete of the year. And it's not over yet; Makusha is also the front runner for the 2011 Bowerman Award, often described as "track and field's Heisman." In Daegu Makusha will be competing in the 100 and the long jump for Zimbabwe. This is his second trip to the world championships; Makusha also competed for Zimbabwe in the 2009 (Berlin) World Championships as well as the 2008 (Beijing) Olympic Games, where he placed fourth in the men's long jump.

Maurice Mitchell
Maurice Mitchell ran his career best 20.19 in the 200 this past April, on his way to making the United States team in that event. He won the 200 at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships for the Seminoles, running 19.99 (wind aided). Mitchell was also part of the Florida State foursome that won the 2011 NCAA 4 x 100. Finally, Mitchell is the only Seminole in Daegu who will be back in garnet and gold for 2011-12.

Barbara Parker
Barbara Parker (c/o 2007) will be racing for Great Britain in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, the same event in which she won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2006 while competing for Florida State. Parker also ran the steeplechase at the 2008 (Beijing) Olympics, running 9:51.93 in the semifinal heats. Daegu is her first World Athletics Championship.

Kimberly Williams
Kim Williams (c/o 2011) won three straight NCAA women's indoor triple jump titles (2009, 2010, 2011) as well as NCAA titles in the outdoor triple jump (2009) and outdoor long jump (2009). She was named the NCAA field athlete of the year in 2009. She will be competing for Jamaica in the women's triple jump at Daegu, her second trip to the IAAF World Championships. In the 2009 (Berlin) World Championships she placed eighth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 14.08 meters (46' 2-1/4").

The 2011 World Athletics Championships start on Saturday, 27 August 2011 and continue through Sunday, 4 September 2011. In spite of Tallahassee and the Trouble Afoot! area being a center of athletics excellence, Comcast doesn't carry Universal Sports, the network that will be covering Daegu 2011. If you do manage to view the telecast somehow, below is a schedule of when the "Magnificent Eleven" are slated to compete. The times listed for the events are the local time for Daegu, which is thirteen hours ahead of Eastern Time. If you're not particularly fond of doing base-twelve arithmetic in your head, I've included a Daegu clock below the schedule.

Rice goes for three and Helton for two at VSU Community 5K

VSU Community 5K course mapThe first Valdosta State University Community 5K started out in 2006 as the VSU Centennial 5K in honor of Valdosta State's 100th anniversary. After a couple of years it became clear that the 100th anniversary was over and the current name was adopted. If VSU Campus Recreation is considering another name change, they might consider calling their race the Chris Rice 5K. Rice has won the last three VSU Community 5K races, half of the six that have been held, and holds the event record of 16:15 that he set in 2009. Rice's wins include the most recent VSU Community 5K, staged on Saturday morning, 20 August 2011, where he ran 17:03, eight seconds ahead of the runner-up, Jesse Prince (2nd, 17:11), one of Rice's VSU cross-country teammates.

Blazer cross-country runners dominated the race, taking five of the top six places. Following Rice and Prince across the line were fellow Blazers D. J. Smith (3rd, 17:20), Ryan Winkel (4th, 17:46), and Marc Kaiser (6th, 18:10). If it were a cross-country meet, VSU would have scored 16 points, with only the Masked Avenger (5th, 17:56) keeping the Blazers from a perfect score of 15. The fastest master in the race was Dan Anderson of Perry, Florida, who finished tenth overall in 19:43.

Senior-year Blazer runner Jordanne Helton represented her team well in the women's division, posting a 20:23 to take the title. It was Helton's second Community 5K win, following her with her 20:12 victory in 2008. Valwood ace Mary Alice Smoot finished runner-up, placing 14th overall in 21:06. A few seconds back at 21:17, Bleckley County High alumna Taylor Harrington finished 16th overall and third in the women's race. Valdosta's Mary Smoot was the fourth woman in and the first woman master, 18th overall in 21:21.

The VSU Community 5K is staged annually by Valdosta State University Campus Recreation. The organization is also responsible for the VSU Homecoming 5K and the VSU Turkey Trot 10K as well as a variety of non-running events. The next road race in Valdosta, Georgia will be the third annual Valdosta Labor Day 5K on, of course, Labor Day (Monday, 5 September 2011).

Making a meal of the mile

On Saturday morning, 20 August 2011, three-time Olympic 1500-meter runner Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners took the title at Gulf Winds Track Club's 2011 Breakfast On The Track Mile, running away from defending champion Trevor Touchton on the last lap to post a winning 4:26.90. In the same section Douglas Bell of Tallahassee took top master honors in the race, placing ninth overall in 4:52.90. Maclay School distance runner Stefanie Kurgatt successfully defended her 2010 Breakfast On The Track women's title, finishing 18th overall in 5:05.82. Mary Vancore was the first woman master, running 6:11.89. The race was held on the Maclay School track.

Touchton, about to start his junior year at Lincoln High, had the lead to himself for the first half mile, setting the pace for the first two laps around the Maclay School track. But running comfortably behind him in second was Sullivan, who almost exactly three years earlier had been running 1,500m for Canada at the 2008 (Beijing) Olympic Games. Touchton's best mile was 4:19.89, but Sullivan's was 3:50.36. On the third lap Sullivan closed the gap, entering the fourth lap on Touchton's shoulder. On the fourth and final circuit of the track, Sullivan just ran away from Touchton, winning the race 4:26.90 to 4:33.62. Local triathlete Charlie Johnson, who had staked out third place on the first lap, was gaining on Touchton at the end, but fell short of catching him at 4:37.25.

Kurgatt logged her winning 5:05.82 in the first section; second place in the women's division would have to come out of section two, run immediately afterward. Amy Hines led the other women almost from the outset, trailed over the first two laps by Kelly Stevens. But right behind Stevens on those laps were Micah Adriani, Brandi Campbell, Katie Showman, and Sheryl Rosen. Rosen moved up in front of the other pursuers on the third lap, closing to less than three seconds behind Hines. But Rosen couldn't get any closer on the last lap, and Hines beat out Rosen for the runner-up spot, 5:15.36 to 5:17.58. Stevens held off a challenge from Showman on the final straightaway to hold on to fourth, 5:20.62 to 5:22.37.

231 runners ran a mile, the most romanticized running event in athletics, at the 2011 Breakfast On The Track. Another dozen ran the Hamstring Hundred 100m dash, and a few others ran in the two sections of the Pancake 4 x 400m, where a pancake was used in lieu of a relay baton. Considerably more runners found a more appropriate use for pancakes, consuming vast stacks of blueberry flapjacks along with watermelon and yogurt. Races where you're fed afterwards aren't unique, but they're always welcome.

Johnson's finishing sprint wins the Georgia Veterans sprint tri title

Georgia Veterans Sprint TriathlonMaking up a deficit of over half a minute, Charlie Johnson of Tallahassee's Gulf Winds Tri Club outkicked Lt. Col. Joel Kinnunen 57:18 to 57:22 for the title at the 13 August 2011 Georgia Veterans Sprint Triathlon in Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park near Cordele, Georgia. Tallahassee's Sandy Holt won the women's division in 66:47, nearly a minute ahead of the 67:31 mark of runner-up and top woman master Ronda Walker of Dublin, Georgia. The annual event consisted of a 400-meter swim followed by a 13.6-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run.

Charlie JohnsonJohnson was only the sixth runner out of the water, but moved up to second place during the bicycle leg. But Colonel Kinnunen, a member of the USAF triathlon team, had the fastest ride of the morning, and dismounted his bike at 38:44 into the race, a full 37 seconds before Johnson stopped pedaling. To win, Johnson would have to make up the difference during the running leg. He did. Running a 17:29, Johnson chased down Kinnunen, eking out a four-second margin of victory.

Droze and Barz fly to firsts at Fallen Heroes 5K

Gary DrozeAfter two miles of racing, Gary Droze broke contact with Stanley Linton, going on to a 17:14 win the third annual Fallen Heroes 5K in Maclay Gardens on 13 August 2011. Linton finished as runner up in 17:44. Tiffany Barz won the women's competition, placing 16th overall in 21:38. 232 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.

2011 Fallen Heroes 5KSoon after the race started from the Lake Hall recreation area, Maclay School coach Gary Droze was out in front. Approaching the end of the first kilometer, Droze was shadowed by Montford Middle School cross-country alumnus Hunter Scott, but Scott was no match for the old coach. Midway through the second kilometer Scott had fallen off the pace and was passed by Wakulla High's Stanley Linton, who pursued Droze more persistently. It was not until the fourth kilometer, where the course climbed away from the Lake Overstreet trails and back up to the pavement, that Droze no longer heard Linton's footsteps behind him. Droze added to his lead over the last kilometer, eventually finishing half a minute up on Linton, 17:14 to 17:44. Droze was also the fastest master runner in the race. Scott was third in 19:28, staying ahead of a closing Eric Miller (4th, 19:37).

Tiffany BarzTiffany Barz paced the women through the first kilometer, with Ashley Daily a few steps back and Marietta Colberg-Hall not much farther behind. Barz pulled away mid-race, though, and the race was all hers with a kilometer to go. Barz returned to Lake Hall and the finish line in 21:38, almost a minute ahead of runner-up Colberg-Hall (20th, 22:35). Colberg-Hall had passed Daily on the fourth kilometer. Daily (24th, 22:57) held off Susan Williams (26th, 23:00) for fourth. The fifth woman in, Fran McLean, was the fastest woman master in the field, finishing 30th overall in 23:34.

The 2011 edition of the Fallen Heroes 5K had 232 recorded finishers, the most in the three-year history of the race. The event is staged annually by the north Florida chapter of Operation One Voice.
