Avenger and Arreguin take titles in Turner's Tifton 5K

Minerva ArreguinIf there is any reason that the Masked Avenger of Valdosta, Georgia dislikes about running two races in a day, it's that he'd prefer to run three. The Avenger had to settle for a successful double on Saturday, 17 September 2011, starting with a morning win at Quitman's Cast-Iron Man 5K and concluding with an evening victory at the Turner's Furniture 5K Run For Your Life in Tifton, Georgia. The Avenger ran 17:33 for the 3.1-mile race, putting him about 700 meters ahead of the next runner in, master runner Kevin Langley of Adel, Georgia, who posted a 20:27. Tifton's Mike Beeman placed third in 21:20, followed by the first woman finisher, South Georgia College cross-country runner Minerva Arreguin, fourth overall in 21:49. Tifton's Lynn Sosnoske (9th, 22:38) was the women's runner-up, and Tifton schoolgirl Ashlee Golden (13th, 25:00) was the third woman across the finish line. The top woman master was the fourth female finisher, Kelly Golden of Tifton, Georgia, who was 17th overall in 26:02.

Nearly 40 runners completed the race, a benefit for the Tifton Relay For Life. The race started and finished near the Tift County High School Northeast Campus.

Avenger and Bielmyer show their mettle at Cast-Iron Man 5K

Cast-Iron Man 5KRunning though the streets of Quitman, Georgia ahead of a crowd of about 100 runners, on Saturday morning 17 September 2011 the Masked Avenger of Valdosta, Georgia won the Cast-Iron Man 5K with a time of 17:51. The Avenger finished over half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, master runner Marty Sanders of Thomasville, Georgia. Sander ran 20:09 to stay just ahead of the third-place runner, Valdosta's Bryce France (3rd, 20:12). Valdosta State University biologist Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer was the fastest woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 22:08 to win her second women's title in two weeks. Bielmyer also took top women's honors at the Partnership Cancer Fund 5K in Valdosta on 10 September 2011. Jody Penney (12th, 22:55) was the women's runner up, and Quitman's Jill Tabacchi (20th, 23:41) was the third woman finisher and first woman master.

Quitman's Cast-Iron Man 5K has an eight-year history, during which it has been a longer race (8K) and had a variety of names. One constant is that it has continued to be a benefit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Brooks County. This year the race was held in conjunction with the Brooks County Skillet Festival, hence the new "Cast Iron" moniker. Let's hope the lawyers for the corporation in Kona don't object to the name.

Giddens and Slupecki roll in Tom Brown Park

Both wearing Aucilla Christian yellow, teammates Meagan Giddens and Taylor Copeland raced through Tom Brown Park on Saturday morning, 17 September 2011, far ahead of the rest of the field in the high school girls' race of the Lincoln Invitational. At the finish line, though, it was Giddens who had the edge over Copeland, winning the 5K race 20:51 to 20:54. Girls' team honors went to Wakulla, narrowly beating host Lincoln 50 to 52. Lincoln's Jacob Slupecki handily won the high school boys' race in 16:50, while host school Lincoln was once again disappointed in the team standings, placing second to Maclay 64 to 68.

"It was perfect for running out here at 8:00AM," remarked Lincoln assistant coach, Jessie Close, before the start of the first race.

It was still wasn't bad at 10:00AM, with mild temperatures and a light overcast, when the high school girls started running. The race opened with Aucilla Christian Academy teammates Meagan Giddens and Taylor Copeland out in front almost immediately. By the end of the first kilometer the two Aucilla athletes had broken contact with the field. After three kilometers Giddens and Copeland were still running side by side, over half a minute ahead of the third place runner, Kellie Hays of Lincoln. As the finish line approached, Giddens ran away from Copeland to win 20:47 to 20:51. Meanwhile, Wakulla's Marty Wiedeman and Cora Atkinson had been moving up through the field. Wiedeman kicked home on the final straightaway to challenge Hays, but Hays managed to hang on to third while Wiedeman was fourth, both runners clocked in 21:54. Atkinson was fifth in 22:01, and the two Wakulla runners were joined by a third, Kasey Jones (10th, 23:03) in the top ten. Host school Lincoln also put three girls in the top ten and had freshman Madeline Horgan (11th, 23:05) place just outside the top ten, but while the Trojans were waiting for their fifth runner to finish, Wakulla's next four runners crossed the line, sealing Wakulla's 50 to 52 victory.

The sun was out when the boys' race started. Several athletes fought for the early lead, but after two kilometers Lincoln senior Jacob Slupecki was out in front. 70 meters back, Wakulla's Stanley Linton, Maclay's Travis Covert, and Maclay's Connor Daughton chased Slupecki. In the second half of the race, Covert dropped Linton and Daughton, but failed to make any ground on Slupecki, who crossed the line first in 16:50 while Covert claimed the runner-up spot in 17:07. Linton slipped away from Daughton to take third, 17:22 to 17:25. Covert and Daughton were joined in the top ten by their fellow Maclay runner Jack Rutledge (9th, 18:04), and with additional scorers Matt Antworth (18th, 18:44) and Dennis Keane (31st, 19:32) Maclay was able to eke out a narrow 64 to 68 victory over runner-up Lincoln in the team standings, disappointing the host school for the second time that morning.

The 2011 high school cross-country season continues in Tallahassee with the Florida State University Invitational on September 24 at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail, the Cougar Challenge on October 8 at Phipps Park, the Tallahassee All-Comers Cross Country Championship on October 28 at Maclay School, and some meets in the state championship series in November. And don't forget middle school competition--the Everhart Invitational on September 22 at Gretchen Everhart School, and the Leon County Schools' championship meet on September 28 at Apalachee Regional Park.

Drouin runs a record 17:11 at Women's Distance Fest 5K

2011 Tallahassee Women's Distance FestivalOn 17 September 2011, another fine morning for racing in Tallahassee, FSU students Jackie Drouin and Astrid Leutert led 180 other women on a five-kilometer run through the streets of Indianhead Acres. At the Optimist Park finish line of the 3.1-mile race, Drouin had beaten Leutert 17:11 to 17:17 to win the 30th annual Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. For the second year in a row Jane Johnson, a two-time winner of the event, was the fastest woman master, placing 24th in 21:11. In the men's race, which started five minutes after the women, Kevin Sullivan of charged to a 14:59.27 course record, winning by over a minute. Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze was the top master, finishing fourth overall in 16:38.

Jackie DrouinReminiscent of last year's Quail Trail 5K, a large contingent of FSU women cross-country runners entered the race. But the field was also peppered with top local runners such as defending champion Lisa Johnson and 2006-2007 champ Sheryl Rosen. There was a crowd up front in the early going, as no one was willing to concede the lead. But eventually two of the FSU runners broke contact with the field--Jackie Drouin, a Columbia University transfer from Lawrenceville, Georgia; and Astrid Leutert, a Northern Arizona University transfer from Thun, Switzerland. As the two started on the fourth kilometer Drouin was setting the pace, with Leutert less than three steps behind. In third place half a minute back, Amy Hines gave chase. Behind Hines, Katie Showman and Kara Taylor fought for fourth, with Lisa Johnson following closely. Drouin pulled away over the closing stages of the race, never enjoying a huge lead but far enough ahead to win with a women's course record of 17:11. Leutert was runner-up in 17:17, and Hines hung on to place third in 18:14. Showman dropped Taylor to finish fourth in 18:29, while defending champ Lisa Johnson moved up to fifth in 18:33.

Kevin SullivanIn the men's race 124 runners barely had time to wave good-bye before Kevin Sullivan just ran away from them en route to a new course record of 15:00. As Sullivan dwindled out of sight ahead of the other runners, the men's field stretched out. Stephen Cox settled into second, Vince Molosky into third, and mater runner Gary Droze into fourth. Jay Wallace and Nate Kaiser continued to dispute fifth place well into the second half of the race, but in the end master runner Wallace prevailed, 16:46 to 16:50.

Dot Skofronick
Gulf Winds Track Club has hosted the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K since 1982, just two years after the Road Runners Club of America established their Women's Distance Festival program. The Tallahassee event was established and directed for many years by Dot Skofronick, who was honored for her role in the race's history at the starting line of this year's Women's Distance Festival.

Sheldon leads Swift Creek to title at Fort Braden

The Swift Creek Middle School girls' cross-country team totaled 47 points to win the Fort Braden Middle School Cross Country meet on Wednesday, 14 September 2011. Led by Zoe Sheldon's 14:45 winning performance in the two-mile race, Swift Creek put three girls in the top ten in winning their second team title in two outings so far this season. In the boys' race, Evan Francis of Raa Middle School pushed his record for the season to 2-0 with a 12:16 win, but Montford Middle School took the team title, tallying 55 points to pick up their first win of the season.

The day's competition opened with the girls' race at 6:00pm. At the end of the first quarter mile Jianni McDole of Deer Lake was leading the field on their way out of Fort Braden Community Park, Linkbut she was already fading, and soon Swift Creek's Cheyenne Hildinger was in front. Hildinger had won the previous week at the Swift Creek meet in Tom Brown Park, but just past the mile mark of the Fort Braden race, Zoe Sheldon took over, and proceeded to run home first in 14:45. Behind Sheldon, Fairview's Bridget Isenberg made a late move to advance from fourth up to second with a hundred meters to go. But Isenberg hadn't left Deer Lake's Alex Wallace far behind, and on the final straight Wallace outkicked Isenberg for the runner-up spot, both clocked in 14:57. Hildinger held on to finish fourth in 15:10.

Evan Francis, representing the defending state champions of Raa Middle School, was in first place in the boys' race before the runners finished the first quarter mile. Francis not only stayed in first, but extended his lead throughout the two-mile race, finishing the race in 12:16 with a 70-meter lead on the runner up. Shawn Nerney of Deer Lake outkicked his teammate Austin Dodson for second, 12:32 to 12:33. It was another dogfight for fourth, with Montford runners Adam Wallenfelsz and Aiden Sailer both clocked in 13:04. Wallenfelsz and Sailer were joined in the top ten by their teammate, Jackson McKnight (10th, 13:21), setting up Montford's winning total of 55 points. Swift Creek, a winner the previous week in the meet at Tom Brown Park, was only eight points back with 63 points, with Raa right behind them at 67.

The Fort Braden meet was the second competition in Leon County Schools' four-meet middle school cross-country season. The season opened on 7 September 2011 with the Swift Creek Middle School Battle at Tom Brown, continues on 22 September 2011 with the Gretchen Everhart Invitational, and concludes on 28 September 2011 at the County Championship on the Apalachee Regional Park Trail.
