Dash Down Stadium 5K 2011--The Bearcats came down from Georgia

On Sunday morning, 16 October 2011, the Bainbridge High cross-country team took a break from the trails to race on the streets in the Florida State University Dance Marathon's Dash Down Stadium 5K. The Bearcat harriers made the most of their trip to Tallahassee; Tae Ross was the overall in 17:58, while Davey Reynolds (4th, 18:37) and Bryce Hixenbaugh (10th, 23:02) also cracked the top ten. Bainbridge's Emma Griffin placed 42nd overall in 27:17 and Bearcat Anne Reynold's was 43rd in 27:31. Aside from the fleet-footed high school and college athletes in the race there were also older runners. Tallahassee's Mark O'Neill was the first master finisher, 13th overall in 23:21.

Tae RossThe 3.1-mile run started and finished near the Integration Statue on Woodward Plaza, using the same course as the FSU First Responders Unit 5K, the Run For The Fallen 5K, and the Salmonole 5K among other campus races. That means that the second mile included the challenging climb up Copeland Street from Call Street to College Avenue and the top of Gallows Hill. Tae Ross was already in the lead before the runners reached that hill, with his teammate Davey Reynolds right on his heels. Reynolds faded, but Ross kept right on going, not winning big but winning by eight seconds in 17:58.

The Dash Down Stadium 5K is a fundraiser for the annual Florida State University Dance Marathon, which is in turn a benefit for the Children's Miracle Network at Shand's Hospital for Children and the FSU College of Medicine's pediatric outreach programs. Race management did not compile results for the 5K, and the times I've reported in this article are entirely unofficial.

Finlayson dogs them all at Barktoberfest

Jay FinlaysonJay Finlayson might have been running a time trial. The Aucilla Christian Academy cross-country runner was alone, far ahead of the field for most of the race, when he recorded a winning 17:11 in the Barktoberfest 5K on Saturday afternoon, 15 October 2011, in Monticello, Florida. The runner-up, Jason Ketterer, was about a kilometer behind Finlayson. Ketterer's time was 21:37. At 22:06 Sean Gray was the third runner in and the first master. Arianna Neely was the first female finisher, placing fifth overall in 25:08, just ahead of female runner-up Kim Nickel (6th, 25:14). Rhonda Kenyon (7th, 26:41) was the top woman master.

Start of the Barktoberfest 5KMore than a few road races are fundraisers for animal shelters. In the immediate area, the Tails & Trails 10K/5K benefits the Tallahassee-Leon County Animal Shelter Foundation, the Run For Rover benefits the Thomas County Humane Society, and the Mike-The-Dog Run benefits Cauzican Animal Rescue. Maybe it's because dogs love to run. Or maybe it's just because animal aid groups are chronically underfunded and are willing to try any kind of event to raise cash. Whatever the reason, add the Barktoberfest 5K to the list of events supporting animal groups, in this case the Jefferson County Humane Society, which needs money to build a new headquarters.

Steve BaraccoQuite appropriately, then, the race started on Mamie Scott Drive near the old Humane Society building in Monticello, and finished at the future site of the new Humane Society east of Monticello along US 90. Athletes at the start were about evenly divided between entries in the 5K and entries in a duathlon. The duathletes would continue on after the 5K, bicycling another 10K on trails and then concluding their event with a 3K cross-country run.

Jane JohnsonAfter Finlayson had wrapped up his win, Doug Bell was the next to complete 5K, but Bell wasn't finished--he was in the duathlon and had a bike ride ahead of him. A few seconds behind Bell were two more duathlon entries, Jeff Nielsen and Steve Baracco. Baracco made up those seconds on the next two legs of the race, going on to win the duathlon in 65:56. Bell was second in 66:42 and Nielsen third in 68:18. Jane Johnson was the first woman as well as the first woman master in the duathlon, putting up a 74:17 for the event.

Ribble and Jenkins head hundreds at Race To Live

Nick Ribble"We have two road races on campus every weekend," said the Florida State University police officer. "This one is the biggest."

He was at the top of College Avenue in front of Westcott Hall, looking down College Avenue at the horde gathering for the start of Zeta Tau Alpha's annual Race To Live 5K on Saturday morning, 15 October 2011. There aren't actually two runs in FSU's streets each weekend, or even most weekends, but it is indisputable that ZTA's 5K is the largest. There were hundreds and hundreds assembled for this year's race, but you'll have to take my word for it--it has been several years since ZTA even attempted to compile complete results of the event.

2011 Race To Live 5K start
A little over twenty minutes later than the schedule 10:00AM starting time, the field was released to start its charge west up the College Avenue approach of Gallows Hill. One runner sprinted the first 150 meters to the hilltop, stopped, and declared victory before jogging onward. The other leaders at the top of the hill had one thing in common with him--they wouldn't be near the front at the finish of the race.

Chloe JenkinsThat honor went to Nick Ribble, a former cross-country runner at Clearwater, Florida's Countryside High School (c/o 2009). At the halfway point of the race Ribble was out in front with an eight second lead. He widened that gap to 23 seconds on the way to the finish, winning the race in 19:06. In the women's division, Chloe Jenkins of the FSU Swim Club was even more dominant. Jenkins led the women's division almost from the start, racing to a 20:42 win and finishing over a minute ahead of the female runner-up, Megan O'Conner, who clocked 21:44. Jenkins' time was also faster than Katie Showman's winning time of 21:17 in the 2010 Race To Live. The fastest master runner of the morning was Matt Curran, who crossed the finish line at 21:04.

The FSU chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha has staged the Race To Live 5K for more than a few years, but this was only the second year that they've held the race in October. The fall date is actually quite appropriate--October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the Race To Live is a breast cancer benefit. The move from fall to spring hasn't hurt attendance, either. Nor has either the festive atmosphere of the event diminished at all, likewise the amount of effort the ZTA sisters lavish on their race. Just don't count on seeing your name in the results--bring your own watch.

Charlie Johnson swats the swarm at Conley 10K

Charlie JohnsonOn Saturday morning, 15 October 2011, Charlie Johnson took a break from the triathlon to do 34 minutes and 11 seconds of pure running. Just enough, as it turned out, to win the inaugural Conley Elementary School Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K in Tallahassee's Southwood community. Almost 800 meters behind Johnson, Tony Guillen was the runner up and fastest master in 36:56. The first female finisher was Katie Showman, eighth overall in 41:09. Paula O'Neill took women's master honors, running 47:41.

Start Conley Elementary Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K and 5KIt isn't out of the ordinary for a new road race to be added to the schedule, but most of those are five-kilometer runs; it's unusual when someone establishes a new 10K race. But that's just what Conley Elementary School did with their Yellow Jacket Swarm 6.2-mile race. For good measure, though, they did include a 5K event. Both races started just after 8:30AM in front of the school, headed south on Four Oaks Boulevard. Johnson was out in front almost immediately, clearly leading both 10K and 5K runners only one kilometer into the race. At two kilometers the 5K runners and 10K runners split to go opposite directions around Southwood's Central Park Lake. Johnson was only farther ahead, but without the 5K runners to muddy the picture, it was clear that Capital City Runners' Brian Manry and Tony Guillen were fighting for second, with Mickey Moore and Joel Piotrowski running in tandem behind them. Manry and Guillen stayed together through the first half of the race. Guillen broke loose in the second half, though, and while Johnson ran on to a 34:11 win, Guillen beat out Manry for second, 36:56 to 37:24. Moore stole a few steps on Piotrowski to take fourth, 38:45 to 38:54.

Katie ShowmanIn the women's division Katie Showman was just as dominant as Johnson, winning by over a kilometer. Behind Showman, Sandy Holt dropped Abby McLenehan to move into second. In the late stages of the race, though, Kelly Stevens began to close. With two kilometers to go, Stevens was in fourth place, over a minute behind Holt. During those two kilometers Stevens passed McLenehan to move into third and gained half a minute on Holt. But Holt still ended the race substantially ahead of Stevens, 46:12 to 46:49. McLenehan was the fourth woman in at 47:16, followed by the first woman master, Paula O'Neill (27th, 47:41).

Karl Hempel (3rd, 19:11) was the fastest master in the 5K, and the first woman master was Marilyn Ney (49th, 31:17).

102 athletes finished the 10K, with another 131 in the 5K, plus a horde in the one-mile fun run. Not bad numbers for a first year event.

Wenzel wins while Aviles repeats at Pelham Wildlife Run

Pelham Wildlife Festival 2011Baconton Charter School distance runner Bryton Wenzel knocked off defending champion Chase Harris 13:26 to 13:34 in the Pelham Wildlife 5K on Saturday morning, 1 October 2011 in Pelham, Georgia. Pelham High's Urssula Aviles was more successful in defending her women's title, repeating as first female with a 16:27 and placing ninth overall. Thomasville, Georgia runner Chad Johnson (8th, 16:15) was the top master, and Julie Harris (25th, 18:55) of Bainbridge, Georgia was the first woman master to finish.

As you might guess from the times, the run was somewhat short of five kilometers. The lead vehicle took the runners off-course, resulting in an abbreviated race. It was a bad weekend in the area for short courses and general mishaps. The same morning, the Hustle For Haiti 5K was held on what many suspected to be a short course, as was the Big Bend Cares AIDS Run the following day. In Panama City, Florida Run for the Renascence 5K results were annotated with the notation "Estimated Delay Adjustment for bridge delay." If it was a curse, let's hope it has been lifted.

Avenger and Smoot lead the swarm at Honeybee 5K

Behold, the Masked AvengerOn Saturday morning, Ocotber 8, Valdosta's Masked Avenger turned a 17:49 5K in the streets of Hahira, Georgia to win the 2011 Honeybee 5K, the featured footrace in that village's annual celebration of Apis mellifera. Valdosta State University cross-country runner Marc Kaiser fought off David Burnett of Valdosta for the runner-up spot, 18:04 to 18:08. Valwood School's Craig Smoot took fourth in 19:33, while another VSU harrier, Stephen King, was sixth in 19:48. King finished just ahead of a real battle for the master title--Lynn Burnett of Livingston, Tennessee finished a step ahead of Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz to take seventh, 19:48 to 19:50, while master runners Sean McConnell (9th, 19:56) and Tom Phillips (10th, 19:59) were right on their heels.

Also just ahead of the struggle to be first master, Valwood School cross-country runner Mary Alice Smoot was the first female finisher, placing fifth overall in 19:46, the fastest winning time in the women's division at the Honeybee 5K since 2007. Smoot crossed the finish line over half a kilometer ahead of the next woman finisher, VSU biologist Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer (16th, 22:10). Heather Barfield of Hahira out-leaned Valdosta's Elizabeth Smith for the third women's spot, both runners clocked in 23:10. Right on their heels Valdosta's Julia Baun (25th, 23:15) was the fifth woman finisher and top woman master.
