Harris and Wynn dash, dance, and prance to Reindeer Trot 5K titles

Chase HarrisBainbridge, Georgia schoolboys Chase Harris and Tae Ross took the top two places in the annual Reindeer Trot 5K, run from the grounds of the Bainbridge Country Club on Saturday morning, 10 December 2012. Harris, a Grace Christian Academy cross-country runner, ran 17:40 for the win while Bainbridge High's Ross was runner-up in 17:47. Ride Harper of Bainbridge was third in 18:20. Top master honors went to Bainbridge's Greg Waddell, who placed fourth in 18:29.


Jessica Wynn was the first female finisher, running 23:41 for 11th overall. The women's runner-up and fastest woman master was Bainbridge's Julie Harris, who finished 14th overall in 24:12.

Watkins and Rodriguez win for Rover in Thomasville

As evidenced by such events as the Tails & Trails 10K, the Doggie Dash 5K, and the Barktoberfest 5K, our animal friends are a favorite charity for road races in the area. Senior among the races for pets in the region is Thomasville's Run For Rover 5K, a benefit for the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society since 1992. In the 20th annual Run For Rover on Saturday morning, 3 December 2011, Madison (Georgia) master runner Clint Watkins ran 18:47 for the win. Ricky Walker, a master runner from Cairo, Georgia, finished over 400 meters back in the runner-up position, putting up a 20:42. Brookwood School cross-country runner Alex Carico was the first non-master finisher, running 21:03.


In the women's division, Atlanta's Molly Rodriguez edged out Angelina Horne of Pelham for the title, 21:51 to 21:52. Thomasville's Dana Raybon was the first woman master across the finish line, placing 22nd overall in 27:47.

Testing limits at the 2011 Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic

When the number of daylight hours is almost at a minimum in Tallahassee, it's time for the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic. You'd think that you'd want more sunlit hours in which to run either event at the Classic, the 50-kilometer (31 miles) or the 50-mile. But you'd also want cool December temperatures. Besides, the Classic has always been run in December going back to 1980. The Classic has also always taken place in Wakulla Springs State Park, although the current ten-kilometer loop where the athletes log their distance has only been used since 2010.


The 2011 Classic started in Wakulla Springs at 7:00AM last Saturday, Dec. 10. In the 50K, Florida State University student Dan Mosier jumped out into the lead. 50K is almost five miles longer than a marathon, though, and early race exbuberance will only get you so far. Mosier was overtaken by Pete Kaplan, a master runner from Charlotte, North Carolina. Kaplan built up an enormous lead, winning the 50K in 3:39:47, almost half an hour before the next runner finished. Mosier was runner-up in 4:07:38, just ahead of a closing Andy Roberts (4:08:05). St. Petersburg master runner Kristine Cox was the first woman finisher, placing fourth overall in 4:14:19.


A couple of hours later the first of the 50-milers were crossing the finish line. 2007 champion, master runner Jack McDermott of Tallahassee's Gulf Winds Track Club, ran his third and fastest Classic 50 mile. Unfortunately for McDermott, Jacksonville ultra-marathoner Sung Ho Choi ran even faster. Making it look deceptively easy, Choi won the 50-mile race in 6:18:45, with McDermott just over a mile back in 6:27:24. Choi averaged 7:35 a mile, or the same pace as a 23:32 5K. Of course, 50 miles is 16 back-to-back 5K runs. As far as 50 miles is, though, seven days earlier Choi had won a 100-mile race, the Ancient Oaks Endurance Run in Titusville, Florida. Jacksonville's Amy Costa followed McDermott across the line in third place at 7:39:09, the first woman and the first woman master.


Most of the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic's 10K lap is on a four-kilometer stretch of Wakulla Springs Road (aka State Road 61). Under ordinary conditions, it's not a heavily traveled highway, but what traffic it gets is often in a hurry. This was evidenced on the morning of the classic by a bloody streak on the pavement where a white-tail deer had died in a collision. The Toyota that hit it hadn't done much better; it was still parked along the road waiting for a tow. But during the Classic that short stretch of highway is barricaded off. It belongs to the runners then. There are no sounds of racing engines or squealing breaks. There are birdcalls and the occasional report of an 80-caliber acorn dropping onto the pavement. There are also the sounds of runners. From hundreds of feet away you can hear the murmurs of conversation from small groups of ultra-runners. Closer, you can hear the footfalls of individual athletes (or the scrape of the shuffling gait of the exhausted). As they pass you, you can hear their breathing, and know from its volume who is having a good day and who is having a bad one. Soon they go by, taking the sound of their passage with them. All you can hear then is the wind in the trees. The cars are back on Wakulla Springs Road now. Pedestrians and wildlife should beware. But the runners will be back again next December.

No Rudolph here; Robbins and Horne win Red Nose 5K

Stephen RobbinsBrookwood School cross-country runner Stephen Robbins outpaced a field of nearly 300 athletes on Saturday morning, 10 December 2011, winning the Red Nose Run 5K in Thomasville, Georgia. Robbins' time for the 5K race was 17:08, putting him over half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up and top master, Shelton Ansley of Cairo, Georgia. Pelham's Angelina Horne took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 19:56. The fastest woman master in the race was Wendy Hester of Dawson, Georgia, 38th overall in 24:28.


Angelina HorneIt was cool and overcast when the runners left Thomas University at 8:00am, heading north on Millpond Road. Almost no sooner than they had left the starting line, Stephen Robbins was leading the field and pulling away. Cairo master runner Shelton Ansley paced the pursuit, closely trailed by Angelina Horne, an alumna of the Valdosta State cross-country program. Duane Evans, a master runner out of Crawfordville, Florida, followed. Robbins continued to widen his gap on the field. By the end of three kilometers Evans took had taken Horne's place shadowing Ansley. With a kilometer to go, no one was taking bets against Robbins. Evans and Ansley were still fighting for second. While Robbins returned to Thomas University and dashed across the finish line with a 17:08 win, back on the course Ansley was breaking away from Evans, securing second place and the master's title. Ansley ran home in 19:36. Evans was left behind to fight off a late charge from Thomasville master runner Chad Johnson, 19:45 to 19:48. Horne finished fifth in 19:56 with the women's title, a good 300 meters ahead of women's runner-up Melissa Thompson (10th, 21:12).

272 runners finished the first-year event, a turnout that would make many established races jealous. The Red Nose Run 5K was hosted by the Thomasville Junior Service League as a fundraiser for children's charities in Thomas County. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia handled timing and finish line services.
