Sullivan and Slekis take Tannenbaum for Capital City Runners

2012 Tannenbaum Trail 6K Cross-Country Race championsAt Leon County's Apalachee Regional Park, Capital City Runners athletes owned the Tannenbaum Trail 6K Cross-Country Race. Four-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan set a new record in the event, winning the 3.73-mile cross-country race in 19:35. Also wearing Capital City Runners colors, Stefanie Slekis, a former Syracuse University distance runner (c/o 2011), established a new Tannenbaum 6K women's mark, finishing as first female in 21:56. 182 athletes finished the race, a second-annual event produced by Tallahassee's Gulf Winds Track Club.

Stanley Linton and Kevin SullivanThe starting siren sounded at 9:00 am, sending nearly 200 runners thundering across the grass of Apalachee Regional Park. Florida State University freshman Stanley Linton charged out ahead of the crowd. It was Linton's ninth race at Apalachee Regional Park, including a fourth-place finish at the inaugural Tannenbaum 6K, where he ran 20:35. But while few runners have Linton's racing experience at the ARP, not many have logged as many miles there as Kevin Sullivan. The ARP is the Florida State University's home cross-country course, and as a volunteer assistant coach to the FSU women's cross-country team, Sullivan has run the ARP often enough to know every tree by its first name. Not incidentally, Sullivan made seven trips to the World Cross-Country Championships on the Canadian national team, and won four straight Big Ten cross-country titles while running for the University of Michigan.

Kevin Sullivan and Stanley LintonBut Sullivan was also nursing a calf injury which had already forced him to drop out of the Tallahassee Turkey Trot three weeks earlier. While Linton led the race, Sullivan ran cautiously in third, tucked behind Vince Molosky. Midway through the second mile, Sullivan left Molosky behind and set his sights on Linton. At the race's halfway point Sullivan trailed Linton by just a few steps. With a mile and a half to go, Sullivan moved ahead. He continued to widen his lead after that, ultimately running home in 19:35, 14 seconds better than Chris Lake's 2011 course record of 19:49. Linton finished second in 19:50. Vince Molosky took third, holding off Nate Kaiser 20:36 to 20:43. Bryan Koon was the top master, finishing fifth in 21:13.

Stefanie SlekisIn eighth place overall, Stefanie Slekis was the top woman finisher, her 21:56 shattering Katie Showman's 2011 Tannenbaum 6K women's record of 25:33. The female runner-up, Stefanie Kurgatt, also ran well under the old record, putting up a 23:55. A senior-year distance runner at Maclay School, Kurgatt will get more experience with the 6K distance next fall when she starts running with the Georgetown women's cross-country team. 6K is, after all, the NCAA championship cross-country distance for women.

Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country CourseThe Tannenbaum 6K concluded the fourth year of racing at the Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course. The facility first opened in 2009, and this was its biggest year--eight separate events were held there this year, including the NCAA South Region championship and the FHSAA State Cross-Country Finals. Yet anyone can go out there and run, any day of the year. In most sports, that's the kind of access you can only dream about. Typically, a high school football player couldn't step on the field at Campbell Stadium and run a few patterns or kick a few balls. But his buddy on the cross-country team can head out to the course at Apalachee Regional Park and run a few hills or put in some miles. And maybe dream about being Kevin Sullivan.

Curtin runs like a reindeer in Panama City Beach

In the fourth annual Reindeer Race on Panama City Beach, Michael Curtin of the United States Air Force ran like the animal the event is named for. Curtin finished over 600 meters ahead of his nearest competitor, handily beating a field of over 400 athletes. But while Curtin ran practically unopposed for the title spot, that wasn't the case for runner-up. Three runners fought a close race for second, with Mike Sullivan and Nate Sukolsky clocked in identical times of 16:41 and schoolboy Wesley Wilmot right on their heels at 16:43. Kayla Adcock ran 17:18 to finish as the first female; Sarah Mrazek was the women's runner-up at 18:00.

The Reindeer Race is one of two annual running events hosted by the Junior Service League of Panama City. Race proceeds benefit Girls On The Run of Bay County.

A nifty fifty for Toska and Coutts at the Tallahassee Ultra

Ferit ToskaLast Saturday the manatees were at Wakulla Springs. They are seasonal visitors, as dependable as the Capistrano's famous swallows. Manatees are impressively large, but after you're done marveling at a floating creature the size of a compact car, that’s about it for the show. Manatees don't do much other than float, occasionally punctuating their torpor with a loud sigh of exhalation. A floating log would be only slightly less active.

Dave CarverSomewhat more active are the ultrarunners, another seasonal visitor to the springs. You can depend on the ultrarunners showing up in Wakulla Springs State Park on the second Saturday in December, Dec. 8 this year. Ultrarunning is anything longer than a 26.2-mile marathon. Middle-distance running starts around the 800 meters, and continues up through the miles, but by the time you're up to 10,000 meters long-distance running has begun. Long distance continues up to the marathon, but beyond the marathon is the realm of ultra-distance. At the Tallahassee Ultra-distance Classic at Wakulla Springs, ultrarunners tackle two one of two trans-marathon distances, 50 kilometers (31 miles) or 50 miles. The 50K runners performed their feat as five ten-kilometer laps around the park, while the 50-milers had to run just over eight laps. Sharing a finish line but with slightly different starting lines, the two races started at 7:00 am.

Sung Ho ChoiThe favorite in the 50-mile race had to be Sung Ho Choi of Jacksonville, the defending champion. True, he had just won a grueling Ancient Oaks 100-mile race the week before. But in 2011 Sung Ho Choi had also run the Ancient Oaks 100-mile a week before Tallahassee Ultradistance Classic, and he had won that 50-mile run by over a mile. He seemed on schedule to repeat, and accented that status by wearing a jaunty pair of bunny ears on his head and a fluffy tail on his shorts. Sung Ho Choi seemed to be saying that, like the Energizer Bunny, he would keep going and going and going.

Chrissy CouttsEven without a rabbit costume, Gainesville runner Ferit Toska and Dave Carver of London, Ontario were also determined to keep going and going. Sung Ho Choi led the race, but Toska and Carver weren't ever far behind. After five laps Toska made a move, passing both Carver and Sung Ho Choi. Sung Ho Choi answered, and moved back into the lead before the end of the sixth lap, but by the beginning of lap seven Carver was in the lead for good.

"I crashed," said Sung Ho Choi.

At the start of the last lap Toska was well ahead, and Sung Ho Choi was about half a minute ahead of Dave Carver. Toska looked unbeatable, but Sung Ho Choi's bunny ears looked a lot perkier than the man wearing them. With two miles to go, Carver started to move up on Sung Ho Choi. Close to the 49-mile mark of the 50-mile race, Canadian Carver passed Sung Ho Choi to move into second. Ferit Toska cruised across the finish line first in 6:34:53, with Dave Carver finishing runner-up in 6:36:28. Sung Ho Choi held on to finish third in 6:39:39. At 8:16:09 the first Tallahassee runner and first woman, Chrissy Coutts, finished the 50 miles, placing fifth overall.
    John Robida

Long before the athletes in the 50 mile had started finishing, the first 50K runners were completing their 31-mile odyssey. Tampa's John Robida won the event by more than two miles--his final lead was longer than most people are prepared to run. Robida's time was 3:44:50. Second place went to Geb Kiros of Tallahassee in 4:02:44. In third place at 4:09:08, Jacksonville runner Ruth Levy was the first female finisher.
    Manatees

There was a ten-hour time limit, so the ultrarunners were all off the course by 5:00 pm, finished or not.. For now the manatees are still at Wakulla Springs, but the ultrarunners are gone and won't be back till next December.

No half-fast half-marathon for Honaker and Ader at Redfish

Finishing over 700 meters ahead of the runner up, Clayton Honaker of Navarre, Florida won the fourth annual Run-For-The-Redfish Half Marathon in Panama City Beach, Florida on a warm Saturday morning, 1 December 2012. Honaker's time for the 13.1-mile race was 81:11. Second place went to Texas runner Gabriel Garza in 84:02. Two weeks earlier Garza had placed second at the 18th annual Draggin' Tail Run 18-Mile Challenge in nearby Sunny Hill. Garza was followed over the finish line by the first master runner in the race, Tallahassee's Mickey Moore. Moore's time for the half marathon was 86:40.

Coming in eleventh overall, Kristin Ader of Lynn Haven was the first female finisher, putting up a 94:43. Pam Schilling from Ridgeland, Mississippi was the fastest master woman in the race, finishing runner-up to Ader in 1:44:09.

Mathematician Fix adds a Jingle Bell Jog title to his resumé

On Saturday morning, 1 December 2012 at the Albany, Georgia Jingle Bell Jog 10K, Lee County High School mathematics teacher Josh Fix knocked off defending champion Nathan Norton 37:28 to 37:43 for this year's title. Fix, an ultramarathon runner, had previously won the 10K in 2008. The next three places went to high school distance runners; Dale Pate of Sylvester Worth County HS at 37:52, Jack Plowden of Albany Westover HS at 40:04, and Sam Grave of Macon at 40:26. The flood of youth was followed by the race for the top master spot, where Michael Gavre of Leesburg prevailed over Albany's Kurt Anthony, 43:23 to 43:41, the two runners placing sixth and seventh overall.

Ballet-dancer-turned-runner Anne Cheek was the first female finisher in the 10K, edging out the 2010 women's champ, Albany master runner Karen Hamby, 46:27 to 46:36. Tina Moye of Albany placed third among the women with a 46:54. At 47:21 the fourth woman finisher was Carly Banks, an alumna of the cross-country team at Moultrie's Colquitt County HS (c/o 2010).
