Mission accomplished for Ryan Kelly and Audrey Williams

Course MapThe metric system has been part of athletics for over a century, and distances in running are almost exclusively metric nowadays. But it wasn't that many decades ago that in the United States, metric races were the exception. It wasn't until 1976, for instance, that the NCAA cross-country distance changed from six miles to 10,000 meters. In fact, prior to 1965 the collegiate championship cross-country distance was a modest four miles. That same non-metric four-mile distance is what Valdosta State University's Baptist Campus Ministry chose for its Run 4 Missions Road Race.

100 athletes finished the second annual edition of the non-metric Run 4 Missions on Saturday morning, 19 January 2013. Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly was the fastest in that field, running 23:48 for the win. Peter Akiti, a VSU freshman, finished runner-up in 24:31. Tyler Thurman of Lowndes County High School outdueled Matthew Baun of St John Catholic for third place, 24:53 to 24:59. Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the top master of the morning, finishing eighth overall in 27:16.

Valdosta State University undergraduate Audrey Williams finished first among the women with a 31:08. The next female finisher was Martha Mazurkiewicz at 31:34. She was also the first female master, completing a Mazurkiewicz sweep of top master honors at the Run 4 Missions.

Gibson, Chalmers rout rivals in River Run 10K

Myles GibsonFinishing the race with a lead of almost 400 meters, Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson won the Bainbridge Kiwanis ninth annual River Run 10K in Bainbridge, Georgia's Earle May Park on Saturday morning, 19 January 2013. Gibson's ran the 6.2-mile course in 37:18. The first woman finisher was Juanita Chalmers of Tallahassee; Chalmers placed 11th overall in 46:07. Another Tallahassee athlete, Julie Clark, was the first female master in the race, finishing 23rd overall in 53:13. In a concurrent 5K race, Bainbridge High School cross-country standout Chase Harris took the title with a course-record run of 17:14. Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen set a women's course record in the 5K, taking the women's title in 19:00.

StartIt was a chilly morning along the Flint River when over 100 athletes assembled in Earle May Park for the races. They started at 8:00 AM. By the end of the first mile, Myles Gibson was leading the 10K field, with Mickey Moore and Eric Bernard trailing him by half a minute. About halfway through the race Moore shook off Bernard, taking sole possession of second. By then, though, Gibson had widened his lead to over a minute. Gibson further opened the gap during the second half of the race, going on to win in 37:18. Tallahassee master runner Mickey Moore was runner-up in 38:54, with Eric Bernard taking third in 41:08.

Juanita ChalmersJuanita Chalmers also took command of her race early, ending the first mile more than half a minute ahead of the next woman in the 10K, Tallahassee's Martha Bademan. Chalmers added another half minute to that margin during the second mile, and continued to pull away at about the same rate for the rest of the race. At the finish line Chalmers was over 700 meters ahead, beating Bademan 46:07 to 49:48. Shrugging off some early challengers, Tallahassee's Julie Clark was the third female finisher and the first woman master, running 53:13.

62 runners completed the 10K.

Records fall at fourth Red Fox Trot 5K

Red Fox Trot 5KIt was a cool morning and a morning for records at Tallahassee's Roberts Elementary School. In the fourth annual Red Fox Trot 5K on Saturday, 19 January 2013, the winners set a new men's course record and a new women's course record. The number of finishers, 268, was also an all-time high for the race.

Moments after the 8:00 AM start behind Roberts Elementary School, Stanley Linton was in the lead. That didn't change during the 3.1-mile tour of the Dublin Downs community; the Florida State University freshman returned to Roberts Elementary and the finish line with a 200-meter lead and a winning time of 16:10. Linton's time crushed the previous course record of 17:00, set at the 2012 Red Fox Trot by Lincoln High distance runner Trevor Touchton. Linton was followed across the finish line by runner-up Nate Kaiser in 16:53. Vince Molosky finished third in 17:18. Tallahassee's Jay Wallace was the fastest master runner in the Red Fox Trot, placing sixth overall in 17:52.

The Red Fox Trot was Stanley Linton third win in the first three weeks of 2013, his previous victories coming in the Bowlegs 5K and the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K. In women's competition, Katie Showman had also opened the year with wins at Bowlegs and the GWTC 30K. At the Red Fox Trot, though, Micah Adriani finished nearly 50 meters ahead of Showman, placing 19th overall and winning the women's title in 19:36. Showman was the second woman finisher, 22nd overall in 19:47. Ashley Daily (30th, 20:42) was the third woman and Kristine Cox (33rd, 21:04) was the fourth. The fifth woman finisher, Thomasville, Georgia runner Mary Anne Grayson, was the top woman master in the field, placing 34th overall in 21:06.

A no-excuse 30K for Linton and Showman

Stanley LintonDistance runners are notorious for excuses. Many years ago I won a 10,000-meter race on the track. The next day I read in the newspaper that the runner I had edged out for the win had said that he didn't know where the finish line was. Keep in mind that this was on a track, and during the 25-lap race we had already passed the finish line 24 times before the grim business on the home stretch.

The excuses at a local road race aren't nearly as creative, but you'll hear plenty of them. An athlete's training isn't going well, or he's coming off an injury, or he just had the flu. The course is too long, too short, too hilly, or too flat. The weather is always a good excuse. A slow time can always be blamed on extreme weather.

Vince MoloskyAt the 36th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, though, a lot of the usual excuses rang a little hollow when the winner broke the course record by more than three minutes.

With the runners that lined up at the start on Saturday morning, 12 January 2013, you'd expect records to be broken. Four-time GWTC 30K winner Vince Molosky was there, but so was Stanley Linton who had finished ahead of Molosky a week earlier at the Bowlegs 5K. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners, a four-time member of the Canadian Olympic team, was also on the starting line outside of the Retreat on Bradley's Pond.

Kevin SullivanVince Molosky set the early pace as the runners headed north on Old Centerville Road. Around five kilometers, though, Stanley Linton took over the lead. At seven kilometers Linton was 200 meters ahead of Molosky, with Kevin Sullivan running in a distant third. The runners held their positions through the turn-around at the halfway point on Sunny Hill Road. With ten kilomters to go, Linton was more than a full kilometer ahead of Molosky, with Sullivan another half a kilometer back, but Sullivan was already starting to close on Molosky. Linton maintained his lead, however, and ran home in 1:48:22, crushing Charlie Johnson's 2012 course record of 1:51:30. Sullivan picked off Molosky on the way back to Bradley's Pond, finishing runner-up in 1:54:48. Molosky had to be content with third place in 1:58:32.

Katie ShowmanKatie Showman didn't enjoy nearly as large a margin in the women's competition as Stanley Linton did in the men's race, but by seven kilometers she was already a few steps in front of Savannah, Georgia master runner Sarah Batt. With ten kilometers to go Showman had lengthened that lead to half a kilometer. Showman went on to successfully defend her women's title at the 30K, placing 14th overall in 2:16:42. Batt was the second woman in and the top woman master, 18th overall in 2:19:16. Four-time 30K champion and women's course record holder Sheryl Rosen was the third female finisher, 25th overall in 2:26:29.

Sukhi KhoslaWhile 150 athletes were meeting the challenge of the 30K, another 200 negotiated a 15K race. Tallahassee runner Will Stanford led the 15K runners on the outbound trek over the hills of Old Centerville Road, reaching the turn-around about 60 meters ahead of the next runner, Sukhi Khosla of the Leon High cross-country team. On the way back to Bradley's Pond Khosla closed the gap on Stanford, pulling even with  about three kilometers to go. The two swapped the lead several times on the way to the finish, but the race wasn't decided until the final hundred meters, where Khosla prevailed over Stanford 52:57 to 53:02. Maclay distance runner Kristin Sweeney was the first female finisher in the 15K, running 64:19 for 19th overall.
