Avenger and Alice Smoot thrive in the 'Art of Surviving' 5K

For the third Saturday in a row the Masked Avenger was victorious on the roads, running a winning 18:14 at the second annual Art Of Surviving 5K in Hahira, Georgia on 26 February 2011. Valdosta's James Marino followed the Avenger across the finish line, placing second in 18:25. Third place and first master honors went to Brian Corbin of Tallahassee at 19:17, well ahead of the next master runner, Lake Park's Roger Horton (4th, 20:09). Behind Horton, Lowndes High School freshman cross-country runner Tyler Thurman finished fifth in 20:37.

Recalling their showdown in January at Tifton's ABAC Fitness 5K, Alice Smoot outraced Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer 21:13 to 21:24 for the women's title, placing seventh and eighth overall respectively. Smoot was also the top woman master in the race. The defending women's champion in the Art Of Surviving 5K, Hahira's own Maggie Powell, was the third woman in, placing 13th overall in 22:52. Powell is also a cross-country runner at Lowndes High.

The first two races in the Avenger's February winning streak were the Sweetheart 5K in Valdosta on February 12 and the Hospice Half Marathon around Dasher on February 19.

The Art Of Surviving 5K is held in honor of Hahira Elementary School art teacher Stephanie Summers, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Proceed from the race go to breast cancer research. The race started and finished at Hahira Elementary School and was followed by a one-mile fun run. There were 273 recorded finishers in the 5K and another 60 in the one mile.

Slupecki and Stevens stomp to victory in Tom Brown Park

Getting ahead early and farther ahead later, Lincoln High School junior Jacob Slupecki ran 17:30 to win the second annual Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes 5K in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park on Saturday morning, 26 February 2011. Slupecki finished the race nearly 400 meters ahead of runner-up Peter Kaus. Kaus ran 19:08, coming in comfortably ahead of Jeff Armstrong (3rd, 20:00). The next runner home was Pat Sullivan, the fastest master runner in the race, fourth overall in 20:23. After winning the women's title at the 2011 Flash 12K the week before, Kelly Stevens ran 21:23 to pick up another women's win. Stevens finished the race about half a kilometer ahead of the second woman finisher, Lynn Massimore, who ran 23:42. Like Slupecki, Stevens led her rivals almost from the start and never let up. Women's master honors went to Sandra Canada, the sixth woman in at 24:42.

Last fall Slupecki led his Lincoln High School cross-country team back to the FHSAA-3A state championships for the first time in years, where they placed ninth and Slupecki finished 28th in 16:29. Lincoln is right next door to Tom Brown Park, so Slupecki can hardly help having done quite a bit of running on the trails there. If nothing else the Lincoln Invitational, Lincoln's home cross-country meet, in run in the park. Comfortably familiar with the Goose Pond Trail and other parts of the Diabetes 5K course, Slupecki enjoyed the closest thing there is to home field advantage in distance running--not that he needed it. Slupecki's 17:30 actually ten seconds faster than Jared Black (aka John Black) did in winning the 2010 Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes 5K.

Back for its second year, the race is part of Leon County Schools' festival, Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes. A one-mile fun run followed the 5K, and the festival included music, mountain bike races, games, and Zumba. 229 runners finished the 5K, up slightly from last year's total of 217.

From Grandin to Keystone Heights on the Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail

Florida's Office of Greenways and Trails lists the Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail as "In Development." You won't find a trace of the trail in either Palatka or Lake Butler, but it's not just a project on paper. There is already about ten miles of rail trail in place, a twelve-foot wide paved multi-use trail stretching from Grandin to Keystone Heights. We checked out the existing trail on 13 February 2011, starting from trailhead at Twin Lakes Park, near the midpoint of the trail. Based on that trip, here's an east-to-west description of the trail.

The east end of the trail is in Grandin, just north of the intersection of State Road 100 and County Road 315. You won't find any signs or a formal trailhead here, but trail users park on the undeveloped rail bed on the east side of CR 315. The trail starts on the west side of CR 315, heading roughly west and north parallel to SR 100. This phase of the trail was completed in October 2010 according to the Office of Greenways and Trails. It's also a lonely stretch of trail, veering quickly away from SR 100 to traverse woods and prairies--or maybe the prairies are seasonal lakes. It certainly wasn't the season when we went by, but drainage culverts through the trail bed about ten feet above the prairie indicated that someone expected a lot of water in the area. Nearly 2-3/4 miles from Grandin the trail comes back into sight of SR 100 at Putnam Hall. There's a gas station and convenience store just south of the trail at Putnam Hall in case you need any essential supplies like chips or soda, or you just want to spend a few seconds in air conditioning.

After Putnam Hall the trail and SR 100 veer apart again as the trail crosses from Putnam County into Clay County. The Clay County stretch was the first phase of the trail, opened in 2008. Upland pine forest is punctuated by the occasional pond (none of which had much water in them when we explored the trail). Just past 5-1/2 miles the trail passes Twin Lakes Park, the only real trailhead along the trail. Located at 6065 Twin Lakes Road in Keystone Heights, the park has water, rest rooms, and parking.

West of the park the trail and SR 100 start angling back toward one another, and by the time the trail arrives in Keystone Heights proper the trail and the highway are alongside one another. For a short stretch through Keystone Heights the blacktop trail pavement is replaced with cement. There are also quite a few road crossings in Keystone Heights, but not more than 200. These could get annoying if you were doing some serious cycling or running, but not if you're walking or just pedaling around. The stores and restaurants on this stretch are also a bonus for the casually-paced trail users.

On the northwest side of Keystone Heights the trail continues to run alongside SR 100, but a stand of trees separates the trail from the highway, and you can at least pretend that you're going through open country again. Soon, though, a sign announces "END TRAIL," and the trail does end, at SE 57th Street. Across the street you can see the old rail grade continuing through the pines, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has signs up letting you know that even if there isn't a trail here, this is part of the Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail, and alcohol and motorized vehicles are prohibited--so leave the beer and jeeps at home.

The entire trail corridor from Palatka to Lake Butler is similarly protected, all 47 miles of it, even though only just over ten miles of trail currently exists. I don't know when the whole 47 miles will be bicycle-ready, let alone the more grandiose plans for including the trail as part of a 100-mile path from St. Augustine to Lake City. But just outside Palatka, where the Florida Department of Transportation is rebuilding the SR 100 bridge across Little Rice Creek, they're simultaneously building a bridge across the creek for the trail. This doesn't mean the trail is coming any time soon; in Leon County the trail bridge across Fisher Creek was in place for years before any of the GF & A Rail Trail was built on either bank. But alt least we know that when it's time to extend the Palatka-Lake Butler Trail from Grandin to Paltaka, Little Rice Creek won't stand in the way.

Lions Doherty and Hazleton become Spartans

Leon High School distance runners Riley Doherty and John Hazleton will be taking their athletic careers to Spartanburg and the University of South Carolina-Upstate next year. The two Leon Lion seniors signed National Letters of Intent on Tuesday afternoon, 23 February 2011 to compete for the Upstate Spartans. Then they headed out to do more running--because that's what runners do.

Doherty is in the final track season of four years of running at Leon. He was part of the cross-country team at the state championships each year of the Lions' three seasons of consecutive state cross-country titles--2007, 2008, and 2009. At the end of that three-year run he broke into the top ten at the 2009 state championships, running 15:53 for the five kilometers of cross country to place fifth behind teammates Matt Mizereck (1st, 15:22) and Will Stanford (4th, 15:52). At the 2010 FHSAA state cross-country championships Doherty led the Lions to a third-place finish in the team standings, finishing fourth in 15:48. Doherty ended his high school cross-country career back in Tallahassee with a seventh-place finish at the 2010 FACA Senior All-Star Meet. With his senior track season still ahead of him, Doherty has personal bests on the track of 4:31.15 in the 1,600m and 9:28.98 in the 3,200m. The latter record came at the 2010 FHSAA-3A state track and field championships, where Doherty placed fifth in the 3,200m.

Hazleton is also coming to the end to four years as an athlete at Leon. Having never run before his freshman year in high school, his accomplishments through his sophomore year were modest at best, but he improved steadily. By his junior year he was the fourth runner on Leon's 2009 state champion cross-country team. His senior year he was the 2010 District 1-3A cross-country champion, and went on to place seventh at the 2010 FHSAA-3A state cross-country championships, running 15:55. Two weeks later Hazleton closed out his high school cross-country career with a 16:07 fifth-place finish at the 2010 FACA Senior All-Star Meet, leading the North squad to the meet title. With all these accomplishments in the books, you can only hope that folks will make more of an effort to spell his name correctly from now on.

The USC-Upstate Spartans compete in NCAA Division 1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Head coach Jimmy Stephens and associate head coach Carson Blackwelder lead the cross-country and track programs at Upstate. Behind the running of Gilbert Kemboi, the Spartan men have finished third in the conference cross-country championships each of the last two years.

Gibson and Cody celebrate Fat Tuesday with a Fast Saturday

In Dothan, Alabama just about any occasion is an opportunity to hold a 5K trail race on the Larry and Rona Dykes Trail in Westgate Park. Thanksgiving lends a reason for the Pilgrim Chase, high summer the Back To The Beach 5K, and the end of the year inspires the Last Gasp 5K Trail Run. Likewise, on 19 February 2011 the Dothan Runners Club returned to Westgate Park yet again for the Mardi Gras 5K Trail Run.

Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia ran away with this one, looping around the grass, sand, and gravel of Westgate Park in 18:37 and finishing over half a minute ahead of runner-up Theron Carter. Carter clocked 19:10 for the course. Gibson was also the fastest master runner in the race.

Dothan runner and 2011 Hog Wild 15K champion Dana Cody (8th, 21:14) won big in the women's division, finishing nearly an entire kilometer ahead of her nearest challenger, Dothan's Carolyn Houston (25th, 25:51). Just behind Houston, Jennifer Antonivich (27th, 26:03) finished as the third woman and top woman master.

Just seven days after winning Valdosta's Sweetheart 5K, the Masked Avenger beat over 70 athletes to the finish line of the Hospice Half Marathon, running 85:36 for the 13.1 miles. The race took place on Saturday morning, 19 February 2011, south of Valdosta in the rolling countryside around Dasher. Two and a half minutes after the Avenger's finish, runner-up and top master Scot Gardner of Naylor, Georgia crossed the line in 88:10. Hahira's Brandi Faircloth was the first female finisher, placing eighth overall in 1:43:03, nearly half a mile ahead of the next woman, Faircloth's Hahira training partner Jared Komatz (10th, 1:46:42). Karen Wilson of Dothan, Alabama was the first woman master, finishing 16th overall in 1:52:39.

Kunish and Stevens are the fastest Flashers in St. Marks

I was standing along the new course for the Flash 12K about five kilometers from the start when the leader, Tommy Kunish, came around a bend.

"Herb!" he called out. "How far is 12K? 7.2 miles? 7.4?"

"7.5!" I shouted as he ran by.

"So the halfway is at 3.2?"

"Three-and-three-quarters!" I called at his back.

No one who knew Kunish while he was running cross country at Florida State would be at all surprised.

But Kunish has run on the United State Marine Corps' marathon team, so he was able to overcome the handicap of not knowing just how long a race he was running to win Gulf Winds Track Club's 23rd annual Flash 12K on Saturday morning, 19 February 2011. Kunish ran 40:57, holding off a late charge by runner-up Nate Kaiser (41:03). Jay Wallace took top master honors, running third in 41:53. Kelly Stevens was the woman's champion, placing 23rd in 49:23, well ahead of runner-up Brandi Campbell (28th, 50:20). Mary Anne Grayson (34th, 52:23) of Thomasville was the first female master and the fifth woman finisher overall.

The race was forced to a new venue by work on the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Rail Trail on the old course near Woodville, and the 2011 Flash 12K started in the town of St. Marks from the front of Fort San Marcos de Apalachee State Park. Brian Manry led the runners through the streets of St. Marks, closely followed by Kunish. John Robida, Jay Wallace, and Nate Kaiser were not far behind. After two kilometers the race turned onto the St. Marks Trail, where Kunish took control of the race. As Manry fell back, Robida moved into second near the end of the third kilometer. At five kilometers Kunish led Robida by 21 seconds. Robida couldn't keep up the pursuit, though, and by early in the second half of the race he had lost his position to Kaiser and Wallace. Kaiser began to close on Kunish. Just past nine kilometers Kaiser was 18 seconds down, but the gap was narrowing. By the last turn on the course, just 300 meters from the finish, Kunish was only three seconds up on Kaiser. But Kunish ran away on the final stretch to win 40:57 to 41:03.
