Ann Centner and Katie Sherron go one-two at the Bowlegs 5K

Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship is run on the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University, starting and finishing near the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering. Because of the campus connection, the FSU Police always provide a motorcycle officer to lead the race. The 29th annual Bowlegs on Saturday morning, 27 January 2024, was no exception. The police officer paused his motorcycle near the four kilometer point of the race to let the field catch up.

"That first woman is really moving!" exclaimed the police officer.

That woman was Ann Centner, and she was moving fast enough to leave everyone else in the field behind. She continued to move quickly for the rest of the race, going on to win in 18:11. Hawthorne Hay was the first male finisher, coming in third overall in 18:41.

The race started at 9:00 AM on Potsdamer Street next to the College of Engineering parking lot. Charlie Wilson, a sophomore on the Maclay School cross-country squad, set the pace for the first kilometer, closely followed by Ann Centner and master runner Dr. Katie Sherron. During the second kilometer, Centner and Sherron overtook Wilson. The leaders hit the mile mark in 5:54. Centner and Sherron continued to race through the third kilometer, heading downhill to Munson Slough and the turnaround. After the turnaround, it was time to climb back up from the Slough.

"We ran our second mile faster than our first," recalled Sherron. "Ann got away on the way back up the hill."

With a kilometer to go, Centner had broken contact and was continuing to widen the gap. She was over 90 meters ahead when she crossed the finish line first in 18:11. Sherron was the first master runner in the race, finishing runner-up in 18:32.

Behind Sherron, Hawthorne Hay came back during the final kilometer, passing Charlie Wilson to take first in the men's standings and third place overall in 18:41. A few steps back, Wilson was the male runner-up and fourth overall in 18:44. Dr. Hong Guo-Yu was the first male master and third male finisher, fifth overall in 18:58.

Two Swift Creek Middle School cross-country runners raced for third in the women's division--seventh-grader Charlotte Sikes and eighth-grader Alexis Mayfield. The pair ran within a few steps of each other from the start all the way to the finish line, where Sikes arrived in 21:17 and Mayfield in 21:18. Sikes and Mayfield were ninth and tenth overall.
