Blazers Brishen House and Angie Cipriani ran blazing times at the Blazin' Love 5K

VSC Cross Country 1975After Valdosta State University's 2021 cross-country season, Brishen House was awarded as Most Valuable Athlete on the men's team, and Angie Cipriani as the same on the women's squad. A few months later, on 12 February 2022, the duo led a VSU sweep of the sixth annual Blazin' Love 5K. House took first overall, running 15:50 for 3.1 miles on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. Cipriani topped the women's field with an 18:11.

VSU's Charlie Eaton, recipient of his team's 2021 Blazer Award, took second in the race with a 16:30. A few steps back, Dalton Pender, a Blazer hailing from Brunswick, Georgia, placed third in 16:34.

On the women's side, Angie Cipriani's 18:11 was not only good for sixth overall, it was also the fastest time ever run by a woman at the Blazin' Love 5K. Blazer harriers Leah Johnson and Samantha Murray ended their run in a close race for the women's runner-up spot. The advantage went to Johnson, recipient of the 2021 Blazer Award, 19:48 to 19:50. Johnson and Murray were eighth and ninth overall.

The Blazers swept overall honors, but the Kellys of Lake Park, Georgia swept the master runner honors. Ryan Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, was the fastest master in the race, coming in seventh overall in 19:45. Heather Kelly was the first master runner in the women's standings, running 32:34 to finish as the tenth woman and 28th overall.

42 athletes finished the 2022 Blazin' Love 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services. Proceeds of the race benefit the Valdosta State University Blazer cross-country teams.

New year, new records for Logan Kraus and Angie Cipriani

For distance running in Valdosta, Georgia, the New Year opened right. On Saturday morning, 1 January 2022, Logan Kraus won the New Year's Day 5K, blistering the course in 16:03, a new event record. Angie Cipriani likewise broke her own women's record in the event, running 18:34 for the women's title and third place overall.

Kraus' 16:03 was well under the previous record of 16:53, set by Andrew Elam in 2016. Julio Perez of Moultrie, Georgia finished runner-up to Kraus in 18:21. Third place in the men's standings went to Canaan Ponce of Adel, Georgia. A junior on the Cook County High cross-country team, Ponce ran the 3.1-mile race in 18:52, good for fourth overall. Donalsonville, Georgia's Myles Gibson was the first master runner in the race and the seventh male finisher, placing eighth-overall in 20:32.

Angie Cipriani's 18:34 was over a minute better than her previous record in the race, the 19:43 she ran in 2020. No other woman has ever broken 20:00 in the Valdosta New Year's Day 5K. Kyleigh Rice was second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 20:58. Rice was a teammate of Cipriani's on the Valdosta State University Blazer women's cross-country squad during the 2021 season. Kelly Lunceford of Valdosta was the third female finisher and fourteenth overall in 26:14.

37 athletes finished the 2022 Valdosta New Year 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

A record day for Nick Flatt and Angie Cipriani at the Run For Missions

The ninth annual Baptist Campus Ministries Run For Missions Four-Miler was contested on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday morning, 25 January 2020. Master runner Ryan Kelly was there, a three-time winner of the race. So was the defending champion, Alec Munger, who had won the race in both 2018 and 2019. But neither Kelly nor Munger were Valdosta State University cross-country runners, and it was VSU harriers who took nine of the top ten places in the race, including first. Blazer Nick Flatt took that top spot, setting a new course record of 21:07. The Blazer claimed the top seven women's spots as well, with VSU ace Angie Cipriani taking the women's title in 26:09, a course record for female athletes.
Angie Cipriani

Flatt, a VSU junior, didn't go unchallenged. Blazer sophomore Brishen House was less than a second behind him, also clocked in 21:07. Both athletes were under the previous BCM Four Mile record, 22:50, run by Parker Childree at the inagural Run For Missions in 2012. Flatt's winning mark is also a pending Georgia state record for a four-mile road race.

Two other Blazers were also under the old record--Nick Rosatti was third in 22:03, and Logan Kraus fourth in 22:27. Alec Munger, a senior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, likewise ran faster than Childree's record, placing fifth in 22:29.

Munger was the only non-Blazer among the top ten men. The other Valdosta State harriers cracking the top ten were Braedon Bensley (6th, 22:59), Khiro Hoilett (7th, 23:03), Riley Matlock (8th, 23:38), Dalton Pender (9th, 23:47), and Kevin Favard (10th, 23:59). Ryan Kelly was the first master runner in the race for the second year in a row, placing eleventh overall in 24:05.

Valdosta State harriers also dominated the women's standings, led by Cipriani's 26:09--a new Run For Missions record and a pending Georgia state record for women. Blazer cross-country runner Samantha Murray took the women's runner-up spot, placing nineteenth overall in 27:35. Kaley Brough, another Blazer cross-country athlete, was the third woman and 22nd overall in 27:58. Blazers took the next four women's places-- Khamryn Smith (23rd, 28:13), Yasmeen Hammad (24th, 28:31), Olivia Rosener (27th, 28:58), and Kayle Smith (30th, 30:25). Tracey Cole of Pinetta, Florida was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, 32nd overall in 30:56.

New year, new decade, new wins for Morgan Bolmer and Angie Cipriani

From 2012 to 2016, each year there was a New Year's Eve 5K in Valdosta, Georgia. But there was no race in 2017, nor in 2018. 31 December 2019 also passed without a New Year's Eve 5K in Valdosta. But the next morning, Wednesday, 1 January 2020, there was a New Year's Day 5K. Morgan Bolmer got his first win of the new year as well as the new decade, running 18:19 for first. Angie Cipriani was the first woman in the race, placing second overall in 19:43.

Bolmer and Cipriani were the only two runners in the race, male or female, to run under 20:00. Bolmer is a senior on the Berrien County High cross-country team; two months earlier he took tenth in the class 2A boys' race at Georgia's high school cross-country state championships. Cipriani, a harrier for the Valdosta State University Blazers, has been tearing up the roads since the end of the NCAA cross-country season, logging an 18:44 win at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K and a winning 19:22 at the Red Nose Run 5K--the latter race in her hometown of Thomasville, Georgia.

Chad Northcutt of Quitman, Georgia was the second man in the race, placing third overall in 20:31. Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the first master runner in the 5K, third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 20:43.

Pavo, Georgia athlete Pollyanna Bass edged Tracey Cole of Pinetta, Florida for the top woman master's spot, 23:21 to 23:24. Bass and Cole were the second and third women finishers, placing sixth and seventh overall.

47 athletes finished the 2020 Valdosta New Year 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Austin Whitelaw and Sheryl Rosen headline the 15K at the 44th annual Tallahassee Turkey Trot

In Tallahassee, Florida you can depend on thousands of runners showing up in Southwood on Thanksgiving morning. It has been that way since 2002, when Gulf Winds Track Club moved the Tallahassee Turkey Trot to Southwood. Low temperatures or wet weather may cut into the crowd some years, but they still came in their thousands. The weather was bright and cool for the 44th annual Turkey Trot on Thursday morning, 28 November 2019, prompting more than 5,000 athletes to make it to the starting line of one of the four races--mile, 5K, 10K, and the main event 15K. Of that crowd, the first over the finish line in the 15K was Austin Whitelaw, who won the 9.3-mile race in 49:24. Sheryl Rosen was the first woman in the 15K, placing seventh overall in 57:33.

Austin Whitelaw
Austin Whitelaw

The hundreds of athletes in the “Turkey Gobbler” Mile had already had their turn on the streets of Southwood when the longer races--15K, 10K, and 5K--started at 8:30 AM. By the end of the first mile, Austin Whitelaw and Trevor Touchton were leading the 15K field. For the first half of the run, they raced side by side--Whitelaw, an academic advisor with Florida State University Student-Athlete Academic Services, and Touchton, a United States Army Lieutenant stationed at Fort Bragg. Approaching the five-mile mark, Whitelaw broke away.

“It was right at the 10K and 15K split,” said Whitelaw. “After that he was still close.”

Trevor Touchton, Austin Whitelaw
Trevor Touchton and Austin Whitelaw

Between the six- and seven-mile marks, the course made a U-turn, allowing Whitelaw to gauge his lead over Touchton.

“I had about 30 seconds on him there,” said Whitelaw. “I told myself that as long as I keep running aggressively, I’ll be all right.”

He did. He was. Whitelaw took first in 49:24, with Touchton second in 50:14. Caleb Carmichael, the University of West Florida cross-country coach, placed third in 52:22. Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach Gary Droze was the first master runner in the race and sixth overall in 57:27.

Sheryl Rosen
Sheryl Rosen

Whitelaw raced cross-country at Monroe High School and at the University of Tennessee. He also has plans to compete at the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in December. During that long athletic career, though, Whitelaw never raced 15K, so his time in the race stands as a personal best. Sheryl Rosen, the Turkey Trot 15K women’s champ, seemed dismissive of her own performance.

“I was a minute off last year’s time,” said Rosen.

Rosen didn’t mention that her 2018 mark, 56:45, is still the second-fastest time logged by a woman on the Southwood course. Rosen wasn’t exactly pushed in the 2019 race, either. When she crossed the finish line in 57:33, she was almost a mile ahead of the next woman in the race. Rosen collected her first Turkey Trot 15K title in 2006. The 2019 win was her ninth. No one has won the race as many times.

Rachel Durbin
Rachel Durbin

Rachel Durbin was the second woman in the race, coming in eighteenth overall in 1:03:31. Alyssa Moore was the third woman and 21st overall in 1:05:39. L. A. Hanlon was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 31st overall in 1:07:43.

  9. 71:35, Laura Reina (F, 55) Tallahassee, FL
  10. 72:34, Jane Johnson (F, 60) Tallahassee, FL

Whitelaw and Touchton had each other for company during the first half of the 15K. In the 10K, Chris Haynes ran alone for nearly the entire 6.2-mile race. That’s not surprising when you consider that Haynes not only went faster than anyone else in the race, he went faster than anyone has ever run the Turkey Trot 10K. His 31:34 winning time took three seconds off the Turkey Trot record. Not that there weren't any obstacles along the way.

“I was bobbing and weaving among the 5K runners on the fourth mile and the last kilometer,” said Haynes.

He did enjoy himself along the way, though.

Micah Kemp
Micah Kemp

“The drums were cool!” said Haynes. “The course was well marked. It was super well marked.”

Micah Kemp, a senior on the University of West Florida cross-country team, was second in 34:33. Michael Rhodes of Perry, Florida was the top master runner in the race, outkicking Leon High's Joseph Ashebo for third overall. Both runners were clocked in 35:40.

Ann Centner
Ann Centner

Ann Centner went 35:41 for the women's title in the 10K, placing fifth overall. It wasn’t a Turkey Trot record, but it was the fastest 10K run by a woman on the Tallahassee roads in the last eight years. It also took more than a minute off Centner’s personal best, a 36:57 she ran at Thomasville’s 2019 Rose City 10K.

Mia DePillo, a senior on the East Tennessee State women's cross-country squad, placed second in the women's standings and tenth overall in 40:01. Renee Cox, a University of West Florida graduate student in nursing, was the third woman and eleventh overall in 40:10. Cox had won the women's title in the 2018 Turkey Trot 10K. Ali Kelly of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fifth female finisher in the 10K, 34th overall in 43:45.

Estremera led from the gun, and crossed the finish line far ahead of the rest of the field in 14:46--equalling Mizereck’s mark.
