Kelly and Sweeny set records in third annual Hospice Half

Lately it seems like there is a new half marathon in south Georgia each year. The Boston (mini) Marathon is the grand-daddy of these, of course. Having been around since 1979, the race is older than many of the athletes running it. But in 2012 the Red Nose Run Half Marathon popped up in Thomasville, and before that the Hospice Half Marathon arose in Dasher in 2011. The Hospice Half is still around, and was back for a third running on Saturday morning, 16 February 2013. Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly won the 13.1-mile race, setting a new event record of 1:20:45. Half a kilometer back, Kevin Sweeny was the runner-up as well as the fastest master in the race, running 1:22:52. Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott was third in 1:23:36, and Tyler Thurman of Lowndes High School was fourth at 1:29:46.

Not about to be upstaged by the men, Beth Sweeny of St. Augustine, Florida set a new Hospice Half Marathon women's record, winning the women's division in 1:32:23. Sweeny finished the race over a mile ahead of the next woman, Laura McDermott of Tallahassee. Ten-year-old Valdosta runner Kelsey Morse was the third female finisher, clocking 1:41:46.

107 athletes finished the half marathon, the most ever in the three-year history of the race. The event benefits  the patients and families cared for by Hospice of South Georgia and the Langdale Hospice House..

On Saturday morning, 16 February 2013, less than two weeks after running the Tallahassee Half Marathon, Tallahassee master runner Karl Hempel  won the inaugural Break-A-Leg 5K, a production of the Young Actors Theatre. Hempel ran 19:36 for the 3.1-mile race through the Midtown section of Tallahassee, finishing a little over 100 meters ahead of runner-up Jon Morgan. Morgan's time was 19:59, just ahead of the 20:06 put up by third-place runner Carter Hay. Paul Pagano took fourth in 20:27, with Cris Wilhoit fifth in 20:58 and schoolboy William Wilkerson sixth in 21:22.

Right behind Wilkerson, Tallahassee's Vicky Droze was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 21:22. Over half a kilometer behind Droze, Emily Parsons was the second woman across the finish line, running 24:07. Holly Newell ran 24:24 to take the third women's spot, and at 25:23 Joy Van Oss was the fourth female finisher. Michelle Harrison edged out Nancy Proctor for top master woman honors, 26:07 to 26:12.

Just over 200 athletes finished the race, a fundraiser for Tallahassee's Young Actors Theatre.

Flashy victories for Sullivan and Rosen

Kevin SullivanOn a road-racing calendar full of 5K runs, a 12K such as Gulf Winds Track Club's Flash 12K stands out. Twelve kilometers is not an entirely obscure distance, though. The men's world cross-country championship is contested at 12K. San Francisco's Bay-to-Breakers, at 101 years old the fifth oldest road race in the United States, is a 12K. Bay-to-Breakers is a bit larger than the Flash 12K of course; one year the San Francisco race claimed over 100,000 participants. But Bay-to-Breakers also includes costume contests and divisions for "human centipedes," while the Flash 12K is all about running. Sure, you'll see a couple of guys dressed as Batman in the Flash. Nowadays, though, bat-suits are practically business casual.

Stanley Linton and Vince MoloskyIt wasn't San Francisco's tens of thousands, but over 300 athletes set out from San Marcos de Apalachee State Park in St. Marks, Florida on Saturday morning, 16 February 2013, for the 25th annual Flash 12K. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners reached the first turn of the 7.46-mile course ahead of the rest of the field, with Stanley Linton and Vince Molosky a few steps behind. After two miles Linton was able to shake Molosky, but Sullivan had continued to pull away while the fight for second played out. When it was all over, Sullivan had returned to Fort San Marcos and the finish line with a winning time of 38:41. It was the fastest Flash 12K since 1994, and the equivalent of doing two back-to-back 16:07 5K runs then continuing at the same pace for another mile and a quarter. Stanley Linton finished second in 40:26, and Vince Molosky held off Nate Kaiser for third, 41:42 to 41:59. Sean Hudson took the top master spot, running 44:36 for seventh.

Sheryl Rosen
While Kevin Sullivan was racing to his first Flash 12K, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen was picking up her second women's title, leading the female field from start to finish en route to a 46:17 and placing 17th overall. Behind Rosen, Micah Adriani and Mary Anne Grayson dueled for the women's runner-up spot for the first two miles before Adriani pulled away, going on to finish 26th overall in 49:19. Grayson was the first woman master and third woman overall, running 50:45.

Cary and Page outrank the field at the Generals 5K

Jog With The Generals 5KDasher is a village in Lowndes county, Georgia, just south of Valdosta. Based on its name, you'd expect Dasher to be the site of a showcase 100-meter race, or perhaps a track meet solely devoted to sprints. Counter to those expectations Dasher was where 161 athletes completed a distance run on Saturday morning, 9 February 2013--the Jog With The Generals 5K. Once again, don't be fooled by names. Valdosta State University Blazer cross-country alumnus Steven Cary was moving quite a bit faster than a jog. Cary turned in a 17:48 for the 3.1-mile course, winning the first-year event. Behind Cary, Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly finished runner-up in 17:59. Tyler Thurman, a junior at Lowndes High School, took third with a 18:21. Jacob Bearrentine grabbed fourth in 19:58, and Valdosta master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz was fifth in 20:24.

Thirteen-year-old Makenzee Page of Valdosta's Viking Runners Club was the first female, running 22:57 to place ninth overall. Audrey Williams, a Valdosta State undergraduate, was the second female finisher, taking tenth overall in 23:08. Alycia Ussery (11th, 23:23), a freshman distance runner at Richmond Hill High School, was the third female and Valdosta's Jennifer Hummel (12th, 23:27) the fourth. The fifth female and top master woman was Valdosta's Martha Mazurkiewicz, 13th overall in 23:28.

The Jog With The Generals 5K was hosted by Georgia Christian School, a private school located in Dasher whose mascot is (you guessed it) the Generals.

Linton and Woodruff prove to be tough cookies

Stanley LintonThe Run For The Cookies 5K has been around long enough to have lost track of its age. The entry forms, flyers, and posters proclaimed that this was the 21st annual race, but there have only been 20 Cookie Runs, including the first in 1994. Gary Droze won that inaugural event, outpacing modest field of 85 runners in a 3.1-mile run from Tallahassee Mall. Since then the race has moved to Tallahassee Community College, swelled to over 600 runners, and inspired a series of races. In addition to Tallahassee's Run For The Cookies, the Girls Scouts of the Florida Panhandle also raise funds at 5K races in Pensacola and Panama City. One thing hasn't changed over the years: each person who enters the race gets a box of girl scout cookies. The success of the Run For The Cookies shows that When it comes to girl scout cookies, not everyone is content to wait for a girl scout to ring their doorbell. More than a few folks are willing to run a few miles for the goods.

Chris RegoWhether for cookies or competition, more than 600 athletes showed up at the starting line behind Tallahassee Community College on Saturday morning, 9 February 2013, for the 20th annual Run For The Cookies. Once the race started, Chris Rego quickly got a few steps ahead of the horde. Rego led through the mile mark, where his closest follower were Florida State freshman Stanley Linton, Lincoln High distance runner Trevor Touchton, and Bainbridge High athlete Chase Harris. Early in the second mile, Linton surged past Rego and into the lead. Linton pulled steadily away after that, and reached the finish line in 16:00 with the win. Rego was runner-up in 16:18. Touchton took third in 16:53, with Harris fourth in 17:00. Tallahassee's Jay Wallace was the fastest master in the Run For The Cookies, taking fifth overall in 17:36.

Chelsi Woodruff
Early in the race, Chiles alumna Carly Thomas and her fellow Florida State student Chelsi Woodruff got away from the rest of the women's field, but couldn't seem to get away from each other. At the mile mark and again at the two-mile mark, Thomas and Woodruff were running virtually side by side. Late in the third mile, though, Woodruff got a few steps ahead of Thomas then built that into a winning lead. Woodruff took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 17:42. Thomas was 11th overall in 17:54, taking the second women's spot. Another half a minute back, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen was the third woman finisher, 15th overall in 18:25. Rosen was the Run For The Cookies 5K women's champion in the 2011 race.
