No contest for Molosky, Cox at Sundberg 5K

On 20 October 2012, just seven days after racing 20K of cross country at Gulf Winds Track Club's Pine Run at Tall Timbers, Vince Molosky stepped down to the 5K distance and won the 14th annual Alan C. Sundberg Memorial 5K in Tallahassee's Maclay Gardens State Park. Molosky covered the 3.1-mile course in 16:58, well ahead of the 18:09 clocked by the runner-up and top master, Sean Hudson. Kristine Cox was the first female finisher, placing 16th overall in 20:20. For the fourth straight year, Nancy Stedman was the fastest female master, finishing 27th overall in 22:50.


The Florida Skin Cancer Foundation has held the Sundberg 5K annually since 1998, when Maclay Gardens State Park employee Alan C. Sundberg died of melanoma. The Saturday morning weather on October 20 wasn't the sort that makes you think about sunscreen, though.  Temperatures were in the 50s, prompting most runners to think more about another shirt than about sunbathing. But the conditions were excellent for distance running when the 144 athletes in the race set out from the Lake Hall parking lot. Mike Peymann was the first runner out of the Lake Hall area, but he wasn't in front for long. Soon after the runners reached the main drive through the park, Vince Molosky was ahead. After a kilometer he was still ahead.  At two kilometers he was farther ahead. By three kilometers Molosky was ridiculously far ahead of the rest of the runners, and still stretching his lead. Meanwhile, master runner Sean Hudson had overtaken Paul Guyas and Tallahassee mathematician Geb Kiros to move into second. Molosky had stretched out his lead to over 300 meters when he crossed the finish line back at Lake Hall. Hudson hung on to second with an 18:09. Guyas got away from Kiros to take third, 18:14 to 18:28.


Kristine Cox grabbed the lead in the women's field early, soon reducing the race to a struggle for second place. Molly Blanton held that position after a kilometer of racing, trailed by Tiffany Roddenberry and master runner Nancy Stedman. The middle portion of the race was run on trails, during which Roddenberry moved into second. With a kilometer to go, Cox was well ahead, Roddenberry was a few steps ahead of Blanton, and Stedman had fallen back. Cox charged back to Lake Hall to put up a 20:20 victory, finishing over 400 meters of the next woman.  Roddenberry stretched out her lead on Blanton to take second, 22:24 to 22:34. At 22:50, Stedman was the fourth woman finisher and first female master.

On Sunday morning, 21 October 2012, Paul Guyas took the lead at the 800 meter mark of the 12th annual FSUCares 5K, then held off all challengers for the rest of the race around the Florida State University campus to win in 18:28.

Leon cross-country alumna Anna Busby was the fastest female finisher in the race, placing seventh overall in 20:31 to take the women's title.

Tallahassee's Rosen outraces the entire pack at Run For Rover 5K

Finishing with a lead of over 900 meters, Tallahassee lawyer crushed the competition at the 21st annual Run For Rover 5K, hosted by the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society on Saturday morning, 13 October 2012. Rosen's time in the 3.1-mile race was 18:39. Placing second overall behind Rosen in 22:56, Allen Thornhill was the first male finisher. At 23:17, Chris White of Thomasville, the third finisher overall, was the top male master. Lee Sausy was the fastest female master in the race and second woman overall, finishing sixth in 24:12.


Sheryl Rosen is no stranger to the streets of Thomasville, Georgia, where she won the women's division in the Rose City Run 10K in 2007 and 2012. Nor was this her first time as overall champion of a road race; Rosen also won all the marbles at the Quincy, Florida Run With The Moose 5K in 2010.


The race started and finished near the campus of Thomas University on the south side of Thomasville, Georgia. 99 athletes completed the run.

Molosky and Johnson take titles at Tall Timbers

If you pick the right October morning and one of the right places at Tall Timbers Research Station, you can stand on a grassy road out in the piney woods and see a dozen species of wildflowers in bloom. You can hear, although you may not see, about as many different bird species. The deer and the bears may stay hidden, but if you wait long enough, you'll hear the padding of feet, then the panting of breath, and a runner will go by. After the athlete passes the woodland noises will return, unchanged except for some additional scolding by the woodpeckers.


That's what it has been like the last five years when the Gulf Winds Track Club hosted their annual Pine Run 20K at Tall Timbers, most recently on Saturday morning, 13 October 2012. Just short of 200 competitors finished the 12.4-mile trail race this year, led by Vince Molosky at 74:48. It was the third title at Tall Timbers for Molosky, who also won the event in 2008 and 2010. Finishing runner-up behind Molosky, Tony Guillen was the fastest master runner of the morning, running 81:04. Jane Johnson was both the first woman and the first woman master, placing 27th overall in 95:05. Johnson also won the women's title in 2010.


The start of the race was delayed till after 8:00 AM ET, quite a bit later than the scheduled 7:45. Once the runners were let loose, Molosky leapt into the lead. In the 2011 race, Molosky had run about half the Pine Run with Kevin Sullivan, who went on to win the race. Not so in 2012. Molosky just got farther and farther ahead as he knocked off the distance at close to 6:00-mile pace. Tony Guillen moved into second early, but for most of the race he would have needed binoculars to see Molosky, who finished the race with a lead of nearly a mile. Eight kilometers into the race, though, three runners were fighting for third--Charn McAllister, Mike Peymann, and Geb Kiros. Of the three, Kiros dropped off the pace first, and was eventually passed by Jack McDermott. McAllister and Peymann continued their duel through 15 kilometers, but after that McAllister opened a gap. While McAllister went on to take third in 82:35, Peymann had to deal with a closing McDermott. In the end, Peymann held off McDermott for fourth, 83:34 to 83:38.


Jane Johnson handled the women's field much like Vince Molosky did the men's field. Johnson was already leading the rest of the women 400 meters into the race when the runners left oak-lined Henry Beadle Drive. After that, tall grass, clutching vines, loose sand, and steep hills made little difference to Johnson; she just kept getting farther ahead. When Johnson crossed the finish line in 95:05, the next woman was nearly 1200 meters behind. Tallahassee's Kate Chunka placed second among the women, running 1:41:02 and finishing 41st overall. Master runner Michelle Burke of Fernandina Beach was the third female finisher, placing 44th overall in 1:42:08.

More wins at home for Holy Comforter cross country

Tallahassee's Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosts two middle school cross-country meets each season, but neither seems to have a name. "Meet #1" and "Meet #2" aren't exactly names. It would be much more inspirational to compete at, say, the "Crusader Challenge," or the "Lawson Invitational," or the "Red-and-White 3K." It would also be easier to write about.


But a name isn't as important as a venue, and Holy Comforter races on one of the finest cross-country courses around--Lawson's Course, in the meadows behind the school. The Crusaders' held their second home meet of the 2012 season on Lawson's course on Thursday afternoon, 11 October 2012, and the outcome was much like the first meet. Led by Molly McCann's winning 12:14, Holy Comforter shut out the rest of the field in the girls' race, scoring the best possible total of 15 points. Behind the 11:29 first-place finish of Johnny Fitzgerald, the Crusaders boys scored 18 points to take the title in their race.


Competition opened at 4:00 PM ET with the girls' 3K. Holy Comforter's Molly McCann seized the lead early, trailed by her teammates, Katherine Resavage and Gray Kinch. By halfway through the race the three were well ahead of the rest of the field. Kinch fell back during the second half, while Resavage maintained contact with the leader, McCann. McCann continued to lead, though, crossing the finish line ahead of Resavage, 12:14 to 12:18. Kinch was third in 12:45, while Holy Comforter's Julia Rose Travis (4th, 13:22) and Julianna Heuchan (5th, 13:28) were the other scorers for the Crusaders. Ellone Levy (6th, 13:31) of Trinity Catholic was the first visitor to finish, followed by her fellow team member, Julia Chodyla (7th, 13:36). Trinity Catholic scored 46 points to finish second in the team standings behind Holy Comforter's 15 points. The School of Arts and Sciences was third with 79 points, headed by the 18th place finish of their top runner, Katie Huffman (15:01).


51 athletes lined up for the boys' race. Holy Comforter sixth-grader Johnny Fitzgerald led the charge at the start, but Crusader eighth-grader Aaron Amidon soon took over early pacesetting duties. Fitzgerald retook the lead about 800 meters into the race, and never had to look back after that. He went on to win the race, beating Amidon 11:29 to 12:06. Zachary Jackson of Cornerstone was third in 12:30, with Josh Ciarlariello of Community Christian fourth in 12:51. Jordan Pichard (5th, 12:55), Bryce Valveri (6th, 12:55), and James Ford (7th, 12:55) filled out Holy Comforter's scoring contingent, giving the Crusaders a winning total of 18 points. Trinity was second in the team standings with 55 points, led by their top finisher, Aidan Murtha (13th, 13:31). Cornerstone's team was third with 62 points.

Williams and Williams winners at a growing Get-A-Mammy 5K

Jackson Williams of Willacoochee, Georgia was the first runner back to McKey Park and the finish line in the second annual Get-A-Mammy 5K in Valdosta on Saturday morning, 29 September 2012. Williams ran the 3.1-mile race in 21:43, finishing nearly 300 meters of the second-place runner, Valdosta's Michael Kuo. Scott Gardenour of Valdosta placed third in 23:19, and Larry Morts of Valdosta was the fifth-place finisher and fastest master with a 23:41. Just ahead of Morts, Valdosta State University student Audrey Williams was the top female runner, placing fourth overall in 23:38. At 23:52, Amanda Parson of Valdosta was the second woman finisher.


165 recorded finishers ran the second annual Get-A-Mammy 5K, a few more than completed the inaugural event in 2011. Proceeds of the race benefit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., a non-profit whose programs include providing and administering funds for free mammograms to those who need financial assistance in obtaining a mammogram.
