Shawn Logan and Paula O'Neill were Half-Shell Hustlers in Apalachicola

Reportedly, Apalachicola Bay is the source of 90% of Florida's oyster production. So the only mystery about Apalachicola, Florida's annual Oyster Cook-Off is why it took till 2011 for the city to host that festival. Since 2014 the Oyster Cook-Off has included a running event, the Half-Shell Hustle. Shawn Logan won the seventh annual edition of that race on Saturday morning, 18 January 2020, running the five kilometers through the streets of Apalachicola in 18:18. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing seventh overall in 23:07.


Duane Evans was the fastest master runner in the Hustle, placing second overall in 19:19. seventh overall in 23:07. Reece Juno, the eighth-grade ace of the Franklin County School cross-country team, took third with a 20:50.


In a battle of two past champions of the Hustle, Eden Keene edged master runner Genee Meleski for second in the women's standings, 23:49 to 23:50. The two athletes were eighth and ninth overall. Keene had been the first woman in the race in 2018 and 2019, while Meleski had taken the women's title in 2017.


106 athletes finished the 2020 Half-Shell Hustle, the race's largest field yet.

Speed made the difference for Mike Martinez and Paula O'Neill at the MAD Dash 5K

It could have been a match race on the streets of Tallahassee, Florida between Michael Martinez and Myles Gibson. By the end of Harvest of Life Ministry’s Make-A-Difference Dash 5K, the two master runners were more than 600 meters ahead of the rest of the field, practically in a race by themselves. And when Martinez crossed the finish line at Thomasville Baptist Church that Saturday morning, 23 March 2019, he was a hundred meters ahead of Gibson. Martinez had won the inaugural MAD Dash 5K, running 18:36 to Gibson’s 19:00. Master runner Paula O’Neill was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 23:15.

The 5K started from Thomasville Road Baptist Church at 8:30 AM, following a one-mile fun run. Martinez and Gibson put a gap on the field right away. Sometimes Gibson would lead, sometimes Martinez.


“He’s a good downhill runner,” Martinez said about Gibson. “He didn’t seem to be feeling well on the uphill, so I would get away from him. But he would come back on the downhill.”

On a long, uphill stretch near the end of the third kilometer, Martinez got away from Gibson for the final time. Martinez pulled steadily away after that on the way back to the church and his 18:36 win.


“Myles was getting over a cold, so he wasn’t racing like usual today,” said Martinez. “I’ll take it, though!”


Behind Martinez and Gibson, fourteen-year-old Jaze Buchheister took third in 21:43.

The MAD Dash wasn’t the first race to be run from the church. The Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race had been run in the area annually on the first Saturday in March from 2006 to 2016, and ten of those eleven years the event had included a 5K race. In fact, the course for the MAD Dash was the same as that for the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 5K, but run in reverse. Martinez, though, had never run the previous race.


“I had never seen it before,” he said. “I like the course.”

Unlike Martinez, after the MAD Dash Paula O’Neill had run the course in both directions.


“This was a tougher course that the old 5K,” insisted O’Neill. “It was a lot harder.”


O'Neill started the race with another master runner, Shelby Augustyniak. She was soon ahead of Augustyniak, but never forgot about her.

“Oh, I knew she was behind me,” said O’Neill. “That was my incentive to keep going.”


O’Neill kept going, returning to the church in 23:15. She was pleased with the performance.


“I don’t know where I pulled that from,” said O’Neill. “I haven’t been doing any speedwork, and I’ve only been able to run every other day.”

Augustyniak was runner-up in the women’s standings, placing eighth overall in 24:01. Carrie Smith was the third female finisher and thirteenth overall in 26:05.


70 athletes finished the 2019 MAD Dash 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Triumph in Tallahassee's Midtown for Rhodes and O'Neill in the 5K at Fifth

10 June 2017 was a very good Saturday morning for master runners in the Midtown section of Tallahassee, Florida. Master runners Michael Rhodes and Duane Evans took the first two spots in the sixth annual 5K at Fifth, with Rhodes winning the race in 18:49 and Evans finishing runner-up in 19:53. The first two athletes in the women's standings were also master runners, with Paula O'Neill taking the women's title in 23:31 and Angela Dempsey right behind her in 24:21.

The race started on Ingleside Drive at 8:00 AM, then almost immediately made a 90-degree turn to the right to head into Lafayette Park. Three more right-angle turns and a few hundred meters later, the field was out of the Park and headed east on Ingleside with fourteen-year-old Reed Turner leading. About a kilometer into the race the course turned north onto Crestview Avenue, heading downhill. Master runner Michael Rhodes had overtaken Reed Turner by the turn, and proceeded to leave him behind as the race circled Winthrop Park. When the runners returned up the Crestview hill, Rhodes was alone out front and Duane Evans had caught Turner. Rhodes was nearly 300 meters ahead when he crossed the finish line in a winning 18:49. Evans was second in 19:53 and Turner third in 20:48.

Paula O'Neill

Paula O'Neill was already setting the pace for the women's field by the end of the first kilometer. For the remaining four kilometers she just expanded her lead, ultimately winning the women's title and finishing sixth overall in 23:31. Women's runner-up Angela Dempsey was tenth overall in 24:21. Melanie Leitman was third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 24:50.


78 athletes finished the 2017 5K at Fifth. Proceeds of the race benefit the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center and the Leon High School volleyball team.

Gibson and O'Neill were the rapids at this River Run

In 2016 the Bainbridge, Georgia Kiwanis River Run 10K got a new date. The race had been scheduled for January, but the Flint River, from which the race takes its name, was in flood stage and the course was under water. So the event moved to February. Although the river behaved itself in 2017, the race remained in February. And although there was a new course for the thirteenth annual 10K, the winner was the same as in 2016. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson won the Kiwanis River Run 10K for the second year in a row on Saturday morning, 25 February 2017, running 39:04. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Paula O'Neill took the women's title, placing third overall in 48:10.


It was the third Kiwanis River Run 10K title for Gibson, who also won the event in 2013. In the 2017 race no one else had gone more than eight kilometers before Gibson finished the ten-kilometer run. Mark Tombrink took the runner-up spot in 47:59. Behind O'Neill, Michael Marchman edged Dale Nash for fourth, 49:29 to 49:35.


Run concurrently, the Kiwanis River Run 5K also got a new course for 2017. Tanner Norman, a junior on the Early County High cross-country team, inaugurated the new 3.1-mile course with a winning 18:42. Trevor Cleveland, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second in 19:15. Ramsay Miller outkicked Lance Wilson for third place in the 5K, 22:50 to 22:51. Also a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, Miller was the first woman in the race.


41 athletes finished the 2017 Bainbridge Kiwanis River Run 10K. Another 35 completed the 5K.

Riparian victories in Bainbridge for Gibson and Stedman

"I can't close on him!" said Paul Guyas.


It was Saturday morning, 27 February 2016, and Guyas had just one kilometer to go in the Bainbridge, Georgia Kiwanis Club's twelfth annual River Run 10K. In spite of his best efforts he was twenty seconds behind Myles Gibson, stuck in second place. It was the same story at the finish line, with Gibson crossing the finish line first in 37:27 and Guyas following in 37:48. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Nancy Stedman took the women's title in 48:31, placing sixth overall.

It was a race that almost didn't happen. The River Run had originally been scheduled for 9 January 2016, but that week the Flint River had crested at more than five feet above flood stage. All indications were that most of the course through Earle May Boat Basin Park would still be underwater on race day. The Bainbridge Kiwanis rescheduled the River Run for 27 February 2016 with the hope that the river would cooperate.


The Flint was back in its banks when the runners set out on the new date. Donalsonville, Georgia's Myles Gibson took the pace out hard.


"He was out like a shot," said Paul Guyas, a Tallahassee athlete.


At the mile mark Gibson was half a minute ahead of the next runner, Guyas. Guyas was determined not to give up any more ground to Gibson, and actually gained a bit over the next two miles. At the halfway point, Gibson noticed him.

"I saw him back there when we came out of the woods," said Gibson. "I knew I really had to start working then."


It was a tough second half. Guyas wouldn't give up the chase, Gibson wouldn't give up an inch. Guyas' 37:48 was his best 10K time ever, but it didn't get him any closer to Gibson's winning 37:27. John Hemanes was a distant third, running 44:46.


For Gibson, it was a faster time than the 38:14 he had run two weeks earlier to win the Run 2-1-1 10K in Tallahassee. He would like to go faster still.


"I ran 32 races last year," said Gibson. "I'm not going to do that many this year. I'd rather run one 10K under 37:00 than four slower ones."


Even so, Gibson had his eye on the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K in Tallahassee the following Saturday, 5 March 2016. When the racing bug bites you, you tend to stay bitten.

In the women's standings, Nancy Stedman's winning 48:31 gave her a lead of more than 700 meters over the runner-up for the ladies, Darla Castoro. Castoro ran 52:16, placing tenth overall. Carla Elliott was the third female finisher, coming in twelfth overall in 53:05.

Rik Pool won the River Run's 5K race, held concurrently with the 10K. Pool, a former member of the Bishop Moore High cross country team, ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:00. Bainbridge High frosh Caleb Harris took second in 19:21. Al Whatley of Cairo, Georgia was the top master runner in the shorter race, placing third overall in 20:48. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the top woman in the 5K, finishing sixth overall in 23:51.

39 athletes finished the 10K, with another 34 completing the 5K.

Garcia and O'Neill tear it up at Tulip Trot

Joseph Garcia doesn't necessarily like racing in Tallahassee, Florida's Cascades Park.


“There were a lot of turns. I felt like a snake,” remarked Garcia after running the 2014 Firecracker 5K through the park.


Garcia may have found the serpentine nature of the course disagreeable, but he still won that race. The Florida State University student also won the Tulip Trot 5K in Cascades Park on Saturday morning, 30 January 2016. At that race Garcia went 16:47, faster than anyone else has ever run in the park. Maybe Cascades Park is starting to grow on him.

The Tulip Trot 5K started just after 9:00 AM. Garcia was out front right after the start with Vince Molosky a few steps behind. Grady Smith and Maclay School cross country coach Gary Droze followed a little farther back. Smith and Droze soon dropped off the pace, content to debate third place between themselves. Molosky stayed within a few seconds of Garcia for the first half of the race, but Garcia broke away during the second half. During the fourth and fifth kilometer Garcia widened the gap, getting more than 100 meters ahead of Molosky. Garcia crossed the finish line first in 16:47, with Molosky taking second in 17:14. Grady Smith dropped Gary Droze during the second half of the race to take third in 17:48. Droze finished as the top master in the Tulip Trot, fourth overall in 18:12.

Early in the race the lead in the women's competition seemed up for grabs, with several athletes taking a turn up front before falling back. By the halfway point, though, a group of three runners was setting the pace for the women--Shelby Augustyniak, Sheryl Rosen, and Paula O'Neill.


"We pretty much ran together," said O'Neill, a Tallahassee master runner. "They were chatting all the time and I was breathing hard all the time."

O'Neill took the lead with about 400 meters to go, as the runners rounded Boca Chuba Pond for the final time. Building on that lead, she went on to take the women's title, finishing fifteenth overall in 23:14. Augustyniak and Rosen were each clocked in 23:22, taking the next two women's spots and placing sixteenth and seventeenth overall. Sophia Sultan was fourth in the women's standings, coming in twentieth overall in 23:38.


240 athletes finished the 2016 Tulip Trot 5K.

Chris Lake blasts a 15:49 at the Nene Fest 5K

If you were in the Indianhead Acres neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday morning, 9 May 2015, you might have seen Chris Lake racing on the streets. If you paused and waited long enough, you might have seen some of the runners following him, too. But you'd have to wait patiently, because Lake finished more than half a kilometer ahead of the next runner that morning in the second annual Nene Fest 5K. His time for the hilly 3.1-mile run was an impressive 15:49. The Nene Fest 5K doesn't have much history behind it yet, but it's run on the same USATF certified course as the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. In 14 of the last 15 years, Lake's time would have won the Women's Distance Festival race. Only Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan has run faster on the course during that time period.


Most of the streets in Indianhead Acres are called "Nene," which is Muscogee for road or street--a nod to the language of the people who once inhabited the area. Thus the race took the runners on Chockasacka Nene, Ostapakin Nene, Chuli Nene, Apakin Nene, and Chowkeebin Nene. However, the race started on one of the few non-Nene streets in the Neighborhood, East Indianhead Drive. Lake lost little time in getting into the lead once the starting siren sounded at 8:00 AM. It was his last race in Tallahassee before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, to become a resident physician. Lake wanted to make it a good one.


"My main goal was to be under 16:00 today and try to make up from a subpar Palace Saloon 5K performance," said Lake. "This would be the last chance at the 5K to achieve my goal before moving up to North Carolina in a few weeks. I ran a really consistent race, even splits each mile."


FAMU professor Geb Kiros was the only runner to keep Lake in sight through the first kilometer or two; after that even Kiros lost track of Lake on the winding roads. Alone out front yet maintaining an even pace, Lake hit the finish line in a winning 15:49. Kiros was second in 17:38, the top master runner in the race. Tallahassee master runner Michael Kennett was third in 21:05.


Chris Lake had never run the course through Indianhead Acres before at either the Nene Fest or the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival. Paula O'Neill had. In fact, she had won the women's title at the first Nene Fest 5K in 2014. About two kilometers into the second Nene Fest, O'Neill was leading the women's field, but Nancy Stedman was just 16 seconds back.


"Nancy had me running scared," said O'Neill.


Fear proved a powerful motivator. O'Neill widened the gap over Stedman during the second half of the race, going on to successfully defend her women's title with a 22:28, finishing sixth overall. Master runner Stedman was the women's runner-up, seventh overall in 23:00. Sarah Monbarren was third in the women's standings, coming in 10th overall in 23:57.


84 athletes finished the 2015 Nene Fest 5K. Award winners in the race received a jar of Nene Honey, produced by the bees of Indianhead Acres apiarists Michael and Shelly Callen.

Moore and Basford come out on top in the 10K at the Red Shoe Run

In a duel of master runners, Tallahassee's Mickey Moore outran Myles Gibson of Georgia 38:17 to 38:56, winning the fourth annual Red Shoe 10K. The 6.2-mile race was contested in the Southwood community of Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday morning, 18 April 2015. Former Mosley High cross country runner Kaci Basford won the women's tile, placing tenth overall in 48:38.


Eric Godin had won the inaugural Red Shoe 10K in 2012, but in the 2015 race he was third behind Moore and Gibson, running 40:07. Mark Tombrink was fourth in 43:15, and FSU student Brandon Buck took fifth in 46:11.


Shelby Augustyniak was second on the women's side behind Basford, coming in twelfth overall in 50:09. Master runner Andrea Birch was the third female finisher, 15th overall in 50:45. Sarah Monbarren (18th, 51:26) was fourth in the women's standings and Renee McNeill (19th, 51:43) was fifth.


131 athletes finished the 2015 Red Shoe 10K.

The fastest finisher of the 5K was Maclay School cross country coach Gary Droze, who covered the 3.1 miles in 17:19, crossing the line nearly 600 meters ahead of the next runner. Thomas Parker was second in 19:34, just ahead of Crawfordville, Florida, master runner Duane Evans. Evans was third in 19:44. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill took the women's title in the shorter race, placing tenth overall in 22:54. Finishing second to O'Neill in the women's standings was Alyssa Bertinelli, a Florida State University student and former Charlotte High cross country runner. Bertinelli was twelfth overall in 23:26.

For Cox and Sherron it's 2011 all over again at the Ten-Mile Challenge

Stephen Cox doesn't always run Gulf Winds Track Club's Ten-Mile Challenge. But when he does, he wins.


Cox first ran the race in 2011, scorching the field with a 56:13. He did it again at the 27th Ten-Mile Challenge on Saturday morning, 6 December 2014, racing twice around the five-mile loop in Ox Bottom Manor in a winning 56:37. Katie Sherron, the women's winner in 2011, also added a second victory in 2014, finishing 16th overall in 72:48 as the top woman.


Since 2010, the starting line of the Ten-Mile Challenge has been at Hawk's Rise Elementary School, and the race returned there again in 2014. Vince Molosky, a two-time champion of the Ten-Mile Challenge, shot out right away, running so far ahead of everyone else that he nearly vanished in the thick morning fog. Molosky finished the first mile more than a hundred meters ahead of the next runner, Patrick Dawson of Shaw's Running. Stephen Cox was another thirty meters back.


But one mile into a ten-mile race is still nine miles to go. Just a mile later Cox had overtaken Dawson, and Molosky's lead had been cut in half. At the end of the third mile, Cox had left Dawson behind and caught Molosky.


"We ran most of three-to-four together," recalled Cox. "I moved ahead after that steep downhill during mile four."


After that the race belonged to Cox. He hit the halfway point in 28:15 then spent the second time around the course building up a lead of more than 800 meters. While Cox cruised the second loop on his way to a 56:37 win, Patrick Dawson passed Vince Molosky then went on to take second in 59:43. Molosky finished third in 60:20. Mike Peymann was the fastest master runner in the Challenge, placing sixth overall in 64:52.


Katie Sherron has run the Ten-Mile Challenge each year since 2010, five times in all. Her nearest rival in the 2014 race, Jillian Heddaeus, has only run the event twice. Nevertheless, after this year's Challenge Heddaeus had a definite opinion about the race.


"That was so hard!" she declared.


It is called a Challenge, after all.


Sherron and Heddaeus raced side-by-side for much of the first few miles, but by the end of the first five-mile loop Sherron had opened a gap of a few meters. That margin widened to more than 400 meters during the second time around the course while Sherron ran home to a 72:48 win. Heddaeus was the women's runner-up, coming in 20th overall in 74:50. 30th overall in 80:57, Kate Chunka was third in the women's standings. The fourth woman finisher and top woman master was April Bentley, 32nd overall in 82:54.

109 athletes finished the 2014 Ten-Mile Challenge, while another 82 successfully tackled a shorter five-mile race. Gary Galvez of Capital City Runners won the junior race in 31:54, finishing almost 300 meters ahead of runner-up Aaron Taylor. Taylor had led through the first mile but Galvez had caught him on the second, then spent the rest of the race building a margin of victory. Tad David was the third five-mile finisher and first master, running 35:14.


Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the first woman finisher in the five mile, placing sixth overall in 37:24. Ten-year-old Kate Krizner was runner-up in the women's standings, finishing 11th overall in 41:55.
