Linton gets his first Prefontaine 5K win, Adriani her third

SilverSometimes cross country is about running in beautiful places. An example would be Gulf Winds Track Club's 37th annual Salute To Prefontaine 5K, staged west of Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 22 September 2012 at Silver Lake Recreation Area. Silver Lake is one of several gem-like ponds in the Apalachicola National Forest, kin to Moore Lake, Dog Lake, Lost Lake, and other nearby pools with or without names. Silver Lake was a destination years before the runners found it. Boy Scout Camp Semialachee was in the area from 1948 to 1965. The campsites in the recreation area were closed in the 1990s, and there were years when federal budget woes closed Silver Lake entirely, but for the most part the Forest Service has kept the area open for swimming, hiking, and picnicking. Lately it has become the headquarters for off-road vehicle use in the Apalachicola National Forest. And, once a year, cross-country racing comes to Silver Lake.

2012 Prefontaine 5K

The race was named after the late Steve Prefontaine, who, among his other athletic accomplishments, was a three-time NCAA cross-country champion. There isn't much competitive advantage in being a Prefontaine veteran; the course changes frequently. This year it was two loops around the lake and its twin, Girl Scout Lake. The course featured stretches of grass, loamy trails through hardwoods, and ankle-wrenching sand. Runners, of course, only talk about the sandy part, except when they're emphasizing the one slight uphill on the course.

Stanley LintonComplaining about the terrain or not, nearly 200 runners started the race at 8:30 AM. Crawfordville’s Stanley Linton went to the front early. It was Linton’s third Prefontaine; while at Wakulla High School he had placed third in the race in 2009 and fourth in 2010. Trailing him this year were Joel Piotrowski, who had won the race the first time Linton ran it, and Jay Wallace, the Prefontaine champion in Linton’s second outing. This time, though, Linton stayed ahead of them and of everyone else, winning the race in 17:20 and finishing almost a quarter-mile ahead of the runner-up, Nate Kaiser (18:43). Jay Wallace was the first master runner, placing third overall in 18:49.

Micah AdrianiLinton’s win may have been a case of the third time being the charm, but in the women’s competition it was a third win for Micah Adriani, who had won the Prefontaine 5K in 2007 and 2009. In fact, Adriani had finished a second ahead of Linton in 2009. She placed behind Linton this year, but was still at the top of the women’s field, 21st overall in 21:00. The women’s runner-up, Katie Showman, trailed Adriani throughout the race, finishing 27th overall in 21:39. Kristine Cox was the third female finisher, 31st overall in 21:50.

It was a valedictory event for the race director, Jeff Nielsen, who will be turning next year’s Prefontaine over to other hands. He did express one regret. “I wanted to drag some kind of obstacle onto the course,” confessed Nielsen. “But I just didn’t have time.”

I suspect that when the runners went home, few of them regretted Nielsen’s tight schedule.

McCann and Fitzgerald lead Holy Comforter victories at Crusader 3K

Lawson's CourseLawson's Course, the cross-country course behind Tallahassee's Holy Comforter Episcopal School, is a great place to just watch the grass. The acres and acres of soothing green framed by live oaks draw your eyes. It may make you think of getting up and bounding over the hills, but mostly you just want to sit and watch the blades rustle in the wind.

If there's a cross-country race going on, well, that's just icing on the cake.

Crusader's 3K girl's raceIt was some particularly good icing on Thursday afternoon, 20 September 2012, when Holy Comforter hosted its first Crusader 3K middle school cross-country meet of the season on Lawson's Course. The girls race started at 4:00 PM.  From the spectator area, you didn't need the contrast of red Holy Comforter uniforms against the green grass to see that there were a lot of Crusaders in the front of the field. The Holy Comforter charge was led by eighth-grader Molly McCann, who went right to the front and stayed there, clocking 12:39 for the 1.86-mile cross-country run. McCann was followed in by her teammates Julia Travis (2nd, 13:13), Gray Kinch (3rd, 13:26), Emma Travis (4th, 13:41), and Rachel Rumana (5th, 13:44), giving the Crusaders a winning 15 points, cross-country's best possible score. Georgia Slay (7th, 14:28) of Community Christian was the first non-Crusader to finish, but her team was one runner short of having a full squad of five scorers, so second place in the team standings went to Trinity Catholic with 56 points, led by Ellone Levy (8th, 14:30).

Crusaders 3K boys' raceSoon after the last of 50 girls had finished their three-kilometer tour of Lawson's Course, 48 boys had their turn at the Crusader 3K. Holy Comforter sixth-grader Johnny Fitzgerald grabbed the lead on the first straightaway, then spent the next 1.86 miles widening his gap on the field.  11:49 after the start, Fitzgerald crossed the finish line with a victory, over half a minute ahead of the next runner.  Behind him, Holy Comforter's Aaron Amidon outkicked Zachary Jackson of Cornerstone for second place, 12:23 to 12:24. Gannon Hundley of Trinity Catholic was fourth in 12:27, and then came Holy Comforter's pack of Jordan Pichard (5th, 13:19), Tripp Shippen (6th, 13:19), and Bryce Valveri (7th, 13:25), giving the Crusaders a team total of 21 points and the top spot in the five-team field. Led by Hundley's fourth-place finish, Trinity Catholic was second with 58 points.

Holy Comforter will host their next cross-country meet on Thursday, 11 October 2012, at Lawson's Course, starting at 4:00 PM.

Swift Creek girls and Montford boys end season as champions

For the third year in a row, Leon County Schools ended the middle school cross-country season with a trip to Leon County's championship cross-country course at Apalachee Regional Park. Raa Middle School hosted the championship meet on Wednesday afternoon, 26 September 2012, but it was the Swift Creek girls and the Montford boys that went home with the team trophies. Raa's Audrey Dogan won her third race of the four-meet season, blistering the two-mile course in 12:49 to win the girls' individual championship. In the boys' two-mile race, Matt Cashin of Raa completed a perfect four-of-four season with an 11:49 win.

The girls lined the start just after 6:00 PM. Dogan, coming off a loss at the Everhart Owl Run the previous week, lost no time in taking the lead. Swift Creek's Zoe Sheldon, the 2011 Leon County Schools' champion, trailed closely, followed by Montford's Caroline Grace Brantley. Sheldon and Brantley were still in striking distance of Dogan when the Raa runner took them through the mile in 6:19.  No one was going to stay with Dogan on the second mile, though. Not even pausing to wave "good-bye," Dogan widened the gap, building up a 100-meter lead by the time she crossed the finish line with a winning time of 12:49. Sheldon held off Brantley 13:11 to 13:12 for the runner-up spot, while Ana Wallace of Deerlake placed fourth in 13:33. Finishing fifth in 13:56, Swift Creek's Katie Jones joined her teammate Sheldon in the top ten, as did Swift Creek runners Arianna Neeley (6th, 13:56) and Shayla Nguyen (8th, 14:03). A 15th place, 14:46 by Swift Creek's fifth runner, Asta Hemenway, gave the Wolves a team total of 36 points, good enough for them to successfully defend their 2011 championship. Montford edged out Raa for second, 61 to 63.

In 2011, Raa's Evan Francis had gone undefeated through the Leon County Schools' four-meet season. When Raa's Matt Cashin arrived at the starting line at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, 26 September 2012, he was one race away from duplicating Francis's perfect season. For much of the first thousand meters of the race, though, Cashin trailed Matthew Newland of Montford, who led the race going into the Piney Woods section of the course. Cashin took charge in the Piney Woods, establishing a six-second lead on Newland by the mile mark. Newland fell farther back during the second mile, losing his position first to Griffin's Etavious Milton and then to Swift Creek's Stephen Veliz. Veliz overtook Milton to move into second, and then began to close on Cashin. After climbing the Wall, the course's infamous hill, Veliz had pulled to within 15 meters of Cashin. By then the finish line was less than half a mile away, and Cashin began to charge for home, once again widening his lead. Cashin crossed the line first in 11:49, completing an undefeated season.  Veliz was second in 11:57. Griffin outkicked Newland to take third, both runners clocked in 12:08. Newland's fourth-place finish, though, led Montford's total of 56 points, just slightly better than Swift Creek's second-place total of 59, but still a winning score. In third with a score of 68 were the Raa boys, the 2011 champions.

Georgia Peel runs 17:06 at Women's Distance Festival 5K

So who won the Gulf Winds Track Club's 2012 Women's Distance Festival 5K on Sept. 15? Was it the first woman across the finish line, the woman who received the first place award, or the woman who ran the course the fastest? At most races these would be one athlete, but at Tallahassee's Women's Distance Festival a different runner was cast in each role.

The race is a part of the Road Runners Club of America's Women's Distance Festival program which "encourages...women’s only events or races with women’s only start waves." Tallahassee's run falls into the latter category. On Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, a women's-only wave started racing north on Indianhead Drive near Optimist Park. Five minutes later the men’s wave started.

Chelsi Woodruff, a Florida State University student from Winter Park, went right to the front of the 146 athletes in the women's wave. By the end of the first mile, Woodruff had broken contact with the field, while a tight group of eight runners competed for the next spot. For the rest of the race Woodruff only widened the gap, and was the first runner across the finish line. Woodruff's time of 18:31 was well ahead of the next finisher, Catherine McMeekin, who clocked 18:59 for the 3.1-mile run through Indianhead Acres.

Then, just over three minutes after Woodruff finished, FSU cross-country runner Georgia Peel came in. But Peel had started with the men, so she had actually run a course record 17:06, nearly a minute and a half faster than Woodruff. Further complicating matters, all the FSU runners in the field--including Peel, Woodruff, and McMeekin--were ineligible for awards, so the first place hardware went to Katie Showman who had finished sixth (or seventh) in 19:05. The was no confusion about the top woman master; that was Nancy Stedman in 22:11.

The men's competition was more straightforward. 84 male athletes (and Georgia Peel) started in the second wave. 2010 champion Vince Molosky was the early leader, together with Stanley Linton and Chris Rego. During the third mile, Linton and Rego had managed to shake off Molosky, building up a six-second lead by two-and-a-half miles. Then came the fight for the win. On the final straight back to the finish line at Optimist Park, Rego managed to outsprint Linton for a narrow 16:03 to 16:05 victory. Molosky followed in at third in 16:23, while 2011 champion and men's course record holder Kevin Sullivan was fourth in 17:07. The fastest master finisher was Tony Guillen, fifth in 17:59.
