Leon County Schools' 2023 middle school cross country schedule

There are things you can depend on. Every day the sun rises. Every 76 years Halley's Comet reaches perihelion. And every year, middle school cross-country season comes to Tallahassee, Florida. 2023 is no exception. Here are the meets that Leon County School has scheduled this season.

In 2022, seven meets were scheduled but only six were held--the Mabry Invitational at the Florida State University Rec SportPlex was canceled. For 2023, the Mabry Invitational didn't make it onto the schedule, but the Leon County teams have the option of entering the middle school races at the FSU Invitational Cross-Country Meet at Apalachee Regional Park on Friday, 20 September 2023. As far as I know, this is the first time Leon County middle school cross-country teams have been able to officially enter a meet other than those hosted by the county or its schools. So call the 2023 schedule a six-meet season--or seven if you want to count the FSU Invitational.


Once again, there is plenty of middle school cross-country going on in the Tallahassee area outside of the Leon County Schools. Holy Comforter Episcopal School is hosting two meets on their home course, one of the best cross country venues in town. The first is the Crusader Cross-Country Classic on Tuesday afternoon, 26 September 2023, followed by the Tallahassee Open on Tuesday afternoon, 10 October 2023. Both Holy Comforter meets open with an Elementary School mile at 4:30, with the middle school girls' 3K at 5:15 and the middle school boys' 3K at 5:45. In nearby Thomasville, Georgia the South Georgia Middle School Invitational is slated for Tuesday afternoon, 26 September 2023 at Thomas County Middle School.

Several of the high school meets in and around Tallahassee will include middle school races. The pre-season FSUS Invitational at the Southwood campus of Florida State University School on Saturday morning, 19 August 2023, has both a middle school boys' 3K and a middle school girls' 3K on the program. So does the Duelling Summits Invitational at Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 26 August 2023. Likewise the inaugural Nights Of Thunder Cross-Country Fest on 2 September 2023, the Panther Invitational at Saint John Paul II Catholic High School on 9 September 2023, the Wakulla County Meet on 16 September 2023, and the Bearcat Invitational at Bainbridge (Georgia) High School on 14 October 2023.
