A stunning senior year encore for Velasquez and Santiago at the All-Star Classic

Manuel Velasquez and Katrina SantiagoIn high school running, after the state cross country championships there's always a "Wait Till Next Year!" attitude. The winners are looking forward to notching another title. Everyone else is resolving to train hard and take the title from them. That doesn't apply to the seniors, though. For the members of the senior class, there is no next year. In Florida, however, there is the FACA Senior All-Star Cross-Country Classic, a meet hosted by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association each year since 1997.

Katherine MacNealThe 17th annual All-Star Classic opened at 9:00 AM Saturday morning, 23 November 2013, on the Apalachee Regional Park championship cross-country course in Tallahassee, Florida. Each of the 29 girls in the first race were familiar with the course, having run there two week earlier at the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championships. Of the All-Stars, the fastest performance at the State Meet belonged to Cypress Bay's Katherine MacNeal; MacNeal had run 18:28.18 to place second in the class 2A race. At the All-Star Classic MacNeal set the early pace in the girls' race, leading for most of the first of the course's two loops. Among the runners a few steps behind MacNeal was Ferguson's Katrina Santiago. Santiago hadn't run as fast as MacNeal at the State Meet, but Santiago had run 18:21.48 at the FSU Invitational in October--the fastest Apalachee Regional Park performance of the entire All-Star field. Santiago moved up through the lead group, working her way up into second. Then, early in the second loop, Santiago passed MacNeal to take over the lead. MacNeal fought to stay with Santiago, but with a mile to go Santiago held a growing four-second lead. Behind MacNeal, Wakulla Madison Harris had just passed Claire Castillo of Titusville to move into third. While MacNeal was chasing Santiago, Harris was stalking MacNeal.

Katrina SantiagoNo one was going to catch Katrina Santiago that morning, though. Santiago continued to run away from the field though the last mile, ultimately winning the All-Star Classic 5K in 18:39. Madison Harris had overtaken Katherine MacNeal, but MacNeal wasn't done yet. MacNeal charged down the final slope to the finish line, making up ground on Harris with every step. MacNeal slipped byright before the finish line to take second, while the defeated Harris stumbled and fell just past the finish line. Both runners were clocked in 18:49. Claire Castillo held off Palm Beach Central's Morgan Hull 19:09 to 19:11 to take fourth.

Whatever the athlete's school, at the All-Star Classic they were competing for their region, and Santiago and Castillo had given the South the first two places in the race. Hull and Luly Brea (9th, 19:24) gave the South another two runners in the top ten. When Emily Hernandez (11th, 19:32) finished the South had 28 points and the team title. Led by Castillo, the East, last year's top girls team, was second with 47 points.

2013 FACA Senior All-Star Cross-Country ClassicThe boys' 5K started just after 9:30 AM. Fort Walton Beach's Tyler Fabacher, running for the West, was setting the pace for the field at the one-kilometer mark. Manuel Velasquez of St. Thomas Aquinas, running for the South, was right behind him, and the rest of the field wasn't far back. At 1500 meters Leonel Delacruz of Immokalee, running for the West, had taken over pacesetting. Once again, Velasquez was right off his shoulder.

2013 FACA Senior All-Star Cross-Country ClassicAs the field spread out, Tyler Stahl of Land O Lakes, running for the West, took a turn at the lead. Early in the second half of the race, though, Manuel Velasquez went to the front. Stahl followed, with Fort Walton Beach's Charlie Shackelford, running for the North, holding down third. With one kilometer to go, Shackelford had moved into the lead, with Velasquez on his shoulder. Stahl and Deland's Keneth Pinero (East) were a few steps back. Over the final kilometer, Velasquez took charge. Pineiro fell back, leaving Shackelford and Stahl fighting for second place. Velasquez dashed home with the win in 15:39. Shackelford held on to second in 15:45, with Stahl third in 15:48. Pineiro took fourth in 15:55.
Manuel Velasquez

For the West team, Stahl was joined in the top ten by Land O Lakes's Travis Nichols (6th, 16:04), Mount Dora Bible's Troy Clark (7th, 16:06), and Immokalee's Leonel Delacruz (8th, 16:10). The North took the next four places, rounding out their team total of 44. But when Land O Lakes's Jack Poore (13th, 16:27) crossed the line for the West, the team had a winning total of 37 points.

Morning stars at Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday

Quality Inn signFor decades the Florida Athletics Coaches Association has held Florida's High School Senior All-Star Cross-Country Meet two weeks after the FHSAA State Finals. Since 2001, the meet has been held in Tallahassee. Since 2009, the Tallahassee venue for the meet has been the Apalachee Regional Park championship cross-country course. And since 2012, that course has also been the site for the State Meet. So on Saturday morning, 23 November 2013, some of Florida's top high school senior distance runners will be at Apalachee Regional Park for the FACA Senior All-Star Cross-Country Meet. For each of them, it will be an encore of their performance two weeks earlier at the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championships.

More than a few of the All-Stars also ran at ARPXC at the FSU Invitational, the Pre-State Meet, back on 12 October 2013. I've included team rosters for the All-Star Meet below, and for each athlete I've listed their FSU Invitational time (if available) and their State Meet time, just to give you an idea of what you might expect. Of course, we won't know anything till the races have been run. The girls start at 9:00 AM ET, and the boys at 9:30 AM ET.

Peter Kaus and Lauren Poulos are first to the Trough

Peter KausFlorida State alumni returning to Tallahassee for Homecoming 2013 may have been a bit shocked to find the industrial properties on West Madison Street swept away, replaced by the faux downtown of the Seminole Boosters' College Town project. On the Sunday after the Homecoming game, 17 November 2013, Peter Kaus sped past the College Town high rises to the finish line of Madison Social's Trough Run, winning the inaugural race in 14:51. Michael Martinez was the runner-up and top master in 15:00. Lauren Poulos took top woman honors, coming in fifth overall in 16:37. Leah Denger was the fastest master woman, placing 35th overall in 22:14.

As for those times, the course as planned turned out to be significantly shorter than 5K, and the lead vehicle took the front runners on an even more abbreviated route. Whatever the distance, it was a race, and 167 athletes finished. The event was hosted by Madison Social, which occupies a prominent spot at the corner of West Madison and South Woodward, the west end of College Town. The athletes competing in the Trough Run assembled in front of Madison Social at 3:00 PM for the start of the race; they would soon be returning to the same spot for the finish. From the starting siren Albert Reed led the runners east on Madison Street. Before the end of the first mile, though, Peter Kaus was out front, leading the field west on Gaines Street. Early in the second mile Michael Martinez also passed Reed, taking over second. Kaus, indifferent to the maneuvers behind him, was still setting the pace at the two mile mark where the race had started back east on St. Augustine Street. Back on Madison Street, heading west toward Madison Social and the finish line, Martinez started to narrow the gap, but it was Kaus's race. Kaus crossed the finish line in 14:51 as first Trough Run champion, and Martinez followed as runner-up in 15:00. Reed was third in 15:49. David Saxon took fourth in 16:09. Lauren Poulos, the women's champ, edged out Steven Buckner for fifth, 16:37 to 16:42.

Madison Social's 2013 Trough RunAny disappointment over the short course dissolved in post-race beer, cooling in the ice-filled troughs referred to in the "Trough Run" name. Proceeds of the race benefited Jimbo and Candi Fisher's Kidz 1st Fund, established in 2011 to provide education about, raise awareness of, and fund research into Fanconi anemia. Another Trough Run is in the future--"Maybe it is one year from now or six months," according to Matt Thompson, Madison Social's managing partner .

Just have those troughs full!

Shaw and McElroy go for a fast 5K Frolic at ARPXC

Avery ShawDesigned as a venue for championship cross-country meets, the Apalachee Regional Park Trail is starting to catch on as a site for open races. The 2011 Tannenbaum Trail 6K was the pioneer event in this regard. In the autumn of 2013 it was joined by the Run Wild 5K in September and the Trash Dash 5K in November. And the day after the Trash Dash, 17 November 2013, the FSU chapter of Alpha Delta Pi brought their Fall Frolic 5K to ARPXC.

Alexis McElroyThe Sunday afternoon race started about 1:08 PM. Florida State freshman Avery Shaw took the lead at about 800 meters into the run. Formerly a cross-country runner at Lennard High School in Ruskin, Florida, Shaw was unchallenged for the remainder of the 3.1-mile race, going on to win in 20:37. The top runner in the women's field, Alexis McElroy, was no stranger to ARPXC, having raced on the course earlier in the year as a Lincoln High School freshman at the FSU Invitational and the FHSAA District 3-3A Championships. This time McElroy came up a winner, staying ahead of Ashley Johnson and Torie Grey to finish as the first woman in the Fall Frolic 5K. McElroy was twelfth overall.

An excellent cross-country course doesn't necessarily translate to excellence in other areas of race management, though. Times and complete results are sadly unavailable. But here are the top ten finishers in the Frolic.

No rubbish runs for Linton or Ness at the Trash Dash

Stanley LintonFor excitement, it could have been a race the previous week on the Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course, when it was the site of the 2013 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championships. But on this Saturday morning, 16 November 2013, it was the third annual Trash Dash 5K, and it was a race that went down to the wire, with Stanley Linton holding off Caleb Carmichael for the win, 15:54 to 15:55, while Jonathan Campbell was breathing down their necks at 16:00. Tony Guillen was the top master in the race, coming in seventh overall in 18:43. Emily Ness won the women's title, placing ninth overall in 19:06. Debbie Peters was the first master women, 44th overall in 25:32.

Caleb Carmichael and Jonathan CampbellThe race started just after 8:30 AM from a starting line painted on the grass for the State Meet a week earlier. University of West Florida cross-country coach Caleb Carmichael set the early pace. Seven days earlier Carmichael had taken his team to the NCAA-D2 South Regional, but this Saturday he was ready to race himself.

Carmichael had also already seen Apalachee Regional Park with his team during the season. "After being there for the FSU invite, I have to run that course," he said.

Florida State University undergraduates Stanley Linton and Jonathan Campbell followed Carmichael closely through the first mile. "We went by the mile in 4:56," said Linton after the race. Apparently that wasn't fast enough for Linton, because he took over the lead right after the mile mark. Campbell went with Linton, while Carmichael was content to follow in third.

Remy TamerThat was the story through the second mile and on into the third--Linton ahead but never very far ahead. With 300 meters to go, Linton was just three seconds ahead of Campbell. But Carmichael was starting to move. Passing Campbell, the coach began to narrow the gap between himself and Linton. Carmichael got close, but Linton made it across the finish line without being caught.

"I went too late," said Carmichael. "He got me by a second."

Emily NessOne second was indeed the margin of victory, with Linton clocked in 15:54 and Carmichael in 15:55. Campbell followed seconds later, finishing third in 16:00. Former UNC-Wilmington miler, Remy Tamer, was fourth in 16:38. Jim Van Veen, a former FSU cross-country runner, took fifth with a 17:40.

Another former FSU cross-country runner, Emily Ness of Capital City Runners, led the women's field off the starting line. Yet one more former Seminole, Meredith Urban Van Veen followed Ness, as did Lisa Johnson. Johnson moved up, taking the second position away from Van Veen, but by halfway through the race Ness was almost ten seconds ahead of Johnson. That lead would only grow. Ness went on to take the first woman's spot in 19:06, while Johnson was runner-up, placing tenth overall in 19:29. Van Veen held onto third, finishing 16th overall in 20:22. Taylor County High's Meagan Giddens (19th, 20:36) was fourth in the women's competition. A week earlier on the Apalachee Regional Park course, she had finished 17th in the FHSAA-2A girls state championship race, running 19:39.

Formerly part of the America Recycles celebration at Apalachee Regional Park, the Trash Dash 5K was hosted by Sustainable Tallahassee. Although the race has been held in the park all three years of its existence, this was the first year that it was run on the championship course. The site seemed to be a hit with most of the race's 136 finishers.
