Valdosta girls, Bainbridge boys take season opener in Pelham

Pelham City High School HornetsHigh school cross-country season is starting about a week earlier than usual in Florida in 2013, with opening day scheduled for August 31. But even that head start puts Florida a week behind Georgia, where the season is already under way. While the high school runners of Florida's Big Bend were looking forward to one last week of summer training, just over the state line the harriers of southwest Georgia were opening their fall campaign at the Pelham Hornet Invitational on Saturday morning, 24 August 2013.

The morning of competition at the Pelham High School Sports Complex opened with the high school girls' 5K. The Valdosta Wildcats eked out a 40 to 41 victory over the host Pelham Hornets. The margin was so close that if Valdosta's non-scoring sixth and seventh runners, Liz Kelly (14th, 29:16) and Demeonna McDuffie (16th, 31:03), hadn't finished ahead of Pelham's fifth runner, the race would have gone the other way. Top individual honors went to Paige Braswell of Bainbridge High. Braswell ran 21:51 for the 3.1 mile course, finishing nearly 800 meters ahead of runner-up Zakirra McKinnon (2nd, 25:37) of Valdosta.

The high school boys took the stage next in this cross-country debut. It's a mathematical impossibility for a team to lose a cross-country meet with a score of 27 points, and 27 points was what Bainbridge High's Bearcats tallied in the boys' 5K, led by the one-two finish of junior Chase Harris (17:48) and senior Dre Banks (18:57). Pelham's Guthrie Edwards finished third, running 19:08 for the home team. Led by the fourth-place 19:36 of frosh runner Matthew Baun, Valdosta took second in the team standings with 68 points.

The middle school race followed the high school races. The team competition for middle school girls mirrored that for high school girls in that Valdosta Middle School prevailed by a single point. This time it was Valdosta MS over Bainbridge MS, 32 to 33. Valdosta put a winning total together by putting three runners in the top four--Madeline Posse (1st, 13:50), Rachel Massingill (2nd, 15:16), and Sophia Noll (4th, 16:05)-- with Bainbridge's Uriyah Davis (3rd, 15:18) keeping the little Wildcats from sweeping the first three spots.

  10. 17:24.55 ~ Kiera Williams (Valdosta) 7

Led by the 11:40 first-place showing of seventh-grader Caleb Harris, Bainbridge Middle School edged out Valdosta Middle School by a single point, 35 to 36, for the title in the boys' two-mile race. It was extremely close, and the Early County Middle School runners actually tipped the balance--in a duel meet, with Early County missing, Valdosta would have beaten Bainbridge, 27 to 28. Such are the fortunes of cross-country. Noah Richards of Valdosta placed second in the individual standings with a 12:29, and Brandon Wombley of Early County was third in 12:58.

Rogers and Houppert win for Team RWB at Life Is A Beach 5K

Westgate Park Trail, Dothan, AlabamaSaturday, 17 August 2013, wasn't a good day for the trail's in Dothan's Westgate Park. Two inches of rain fell on the city that day, enough to turn any trail into a muddy strip. At 8:00 AM, when the Dothan Runners' Life Is A Beach 5K was scheduled to start, an inch of rain had already fallen and the storm raged on. The race was postponed.

It was of course entirely coincidence that this was the thirteenth annual Life Is A Beach 5K.

Team RWB Fort RuckerBefore accepting this as an example of the Curse of Thirteen, or evidence that Life is a Beach, let's keep in mind that the race was only postponed, not canceled. A week later, on 24 August 2013, 81 athletes were in Westgate Park for the rescheduled 5K. Quite a few were there representing Team RWB of Fort Rucker, and the fastest of that contingent was the race winner, Cliff Rogers. Rogers covered the 3.1-mile cross-country course around the park in 20:26, finishing 80 meters ahead of the runner-up, Wes Cantrell. Cantrell was the fastest master runner in the race, posting a 20:45.

The women's competition turned into a race between two Team RWB runners, with Brooke Houppert ultimately triumphing over Carmel Cammack, 22:29 to 22:47. Houppert and Cammack placed ninth and thirteenth overall. Alford, Florida's Jill Wofsey was the first female master, coming in 29th overall in 26:31, the eighth woman finisher.

The Dothan Runners Club returns to Westgate Park on 7 September 2013, this time not to run cross-country in the morning but to race the roads in the evening at the 28th annual Critter Run 5K.

Stanford and Showman go crazy on the competition

Stanley LintonTake it from an old distance runner, there is land that demands that you lace on some shoes and do a cross-country run. Tallahassee's Phipps Park is such a property. Managed first for agriculture and then for hunting until coming under the control of the Northwest Florida Water Management District, it's a rolling mixture of meadow and woodland akin to the rural districts of Britain where cross-country running became a sport. So for the last six years Phipps Park has been home to one of Gulf Winds Track Club's annual cross-country races, the Miller Landing Madness.

There are actually three races at the Madness, eight kilometers, five kilometers, and three kilometers. The 8K and the 5K were first, with close to 400 athletes gathering for the 8:00 AM combined start.

2013 Miller Landing MadnessStanley Linton launched himself into the lead as the race started, speeding ahead of even the runners in the shorter 5K race. At the mile mark Linton, a second-year NROTC midshipman at FSU, was three seconds up on the defending champion, Vince Molosky. Will Stanford trailed Molosky, followed by 2009 Miller Landing Madness champion Chris Lake. Molosky faded, leaving the chase to Stanford. Stanford made the most of the pursuit, overtaking Linton early in the second half of the five-mile race.

"I put in a surge about three miles," said Stanford.

Will StanfordIt was effective. A mile later, Stanford was over half a minute up on Linton and going away. Stanford went on to post a winning time of 26:29, finishing the race with a lead of almost 400 meters. Lake started to close in on Linton late in the race, but Linton was still well ahead of the UF med student at the finish line, taking second in 27:44. Lake was third in 28:04 and Molosky fourth in 29:23. Fifth place went to the top master runner in the 8K, Bryan Koon, Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Koon's time was 29:31.

Katie Showman
In the women's competition, Tallahassee's Renee Cox led for the first two miles before being overtaken by FSU professor Katie Showman. Cox fought to remain in contact, keeping Showman in sight. With a mile to go, Cox was still less than ten seconds behind Showman. But it was the economics professor's race, and Showman finished the 8K with the Miller's Landing Madness women's title, placing 26th overall in 35:11. Cox was runner-up in the women's division, taking 30th overall in 35:32. Lisa Rutledge, the sixth female finisher, took women's master honors, coming in 43rd overall in 39:10.

Joseph Garcia
Lincoln High alumnus Joseph Garcia saw that there was no drama in the Miller Landing Madness 5K. The defending champion in the shorter event, Garcia jumped out to an early lead and held it, covering the 3.1 miles in 16:55. It wasn't as fast as the Miller Landing Madness record that Garcia set in 2012, but it was good enough for the title, putting him ahead of runner-up Brian Griffith. Griffith, the cross-country coach at Florida State University School, ran 17:20. Emily Ness of Capital City Runners led wire-to-wire on the women's side, earning the women's championship with a 19:20 and placing 11th overall. Wakulla High student-athlete Madison Harris was the second female finisher in the 5K, coming in 16th overall in 20:13.

Jacob Dodson and James McClure
The Miller Landing Madness 3K is usually a preview of the local middle school cross-country season, and this year was no exception. Two eight graders, James McClure of Maclay and Jacob Dodson of Raa, reached the halfway point of the 1.8-mile race together, far ahead of the rest of the field. The two continued to outdistance the rest of the runners in the second half of the race, but McClure outdistanced Dodson as well, finishing first in 10:48. Dodson, who was fifth in last year's Leon County School's middle school championships, was runner-up in 10:59. Maclay seventh-grader Max Eastman was third in 12:03.

Chase Merrick
Chase Merrick of Swift Creek Middle School was well ahead of the rest of the girls in the race about halfway through the 3K, but Katherine Resavage of Holy Comforter closed that gap. Merrick and Resavage were just a few steps apart with a quarter mile to go. They were still only a few steps apart at the finish line, where Merrick was a few steps ahead of Resavage, 12:20 to 12:22. Grace Jackson of Deer Lake Middle School was the third girl in, running 12:57.
