On Saturday, 25 September 1976, the Florida State University cross country team hosted Valdosta State College in a dual meet on the Seminoles' home course at the Seminole Golf Course and the old FSU Dairy Farm in Tallahassee. The distance was five miles, measured by Florida State head cross country coach Dick Roberts.

Valdosta State won, 26 to 31.
This had to be a humbling experience for a NCAA Division I team like the Seminoles--a Division II school comes into town and beats your team on your home course. The Blazers, though, were a very good Division II cross country team. The previous year, 1975, they had placed seventeenth in the NCAA-D2 national championship cross country meet. After outrunning the Seminoles in Tallahassee, the Blazers would go on to place eighth in the 1976 NCAA-D2 national championship meet. The Blazers were eighth in NCAA-D2 again in 1977.
And in 1978, my first year of running for Florida State, Valdosta State returned to Tallahassee and beat us again.
