Schmidt and Sherron take out the Trash

Access to most championship sporting facilities is very exclusive. For instance, you couldn't stroll into Yankee Stadium just to hit a few balls. Even if you succeeded in breaking in, you'd end up arrested and in a holding cell while New York's Finest pondered whether to charge you with criminal trespass or turn you over for psychiatric evaluation.


Distance running is a bit more democratic. In Tallahassee, Leon County's Apalachee Regional Park Cross Country Course has been the site of many championship races, but you can still go out there just about any time, stride out on the grass, and pretend you're Pat Porter. You can even race on ARPXC in several community events. One of those is the Trash Dash 5K.


The fourth annual Trash Dash 5K came to ARPXC on a chill Saturday morning, 8 November 2014. Zach DeVeau took the lead soon after the 8:30 AM start of the race. DeVeau had won another all-comers 5K at ARPXC just seven days earlier, but this time Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners was in the race. Schmidt ran down DeVeau, and by the halfway point he had a respectable lead, a lead that continued to widen through the second half of the race. The two front-runners left the rest of the field far behind as Schmidt ran home with a 17:12 win, and DeVeau finished runner-up in 17:40. After running with Schmidt in the early going, Lincoln High sophomore Donnavan Duchene was third in 18:31. Jasen Fulghum took fourth in 19:14.


Unlike Schmidt, Katie Sherron didn't need to make any moves on the second mile. The FSU economics professor led the women's field from start to finish, posting a 20:07 to place fifth overall and take the women's title. Twelve-year-old Maia Mast, a cross-country runner at Cornerstone, was second in the women's standings, coming in 18th overall in 24:55. Ten-year-old Kate Krizner was the third female finisher, 20th overall in 25:16. Just behind Krizner was the fourth female, Martha Bademan, 21st in 25:22.


The fastest master runner in the Trash Dash was Michael La Bossiere. The Florida A & M philosophy professor ran the 3.1-mile cross-country race in 21:25, finishing seventh overall. Fran McLean was the first woman master, placing 27th overall in 27:13.


80 athletes finished the 2014 edition of the Trash Dash.

Pool and Thompson bag Deer Run titles

North of Tallahassee, Florida, Killearn Lakes doesn't actually feature much in the way of lakes. There are a few ponds, and some of the houses are situated on a body of water large enough to be called a lake, Lake Iamonia. There isn't much open water in Lake Iamonia, though; it's so filled with weeds that if you flew overhead you'd think you were looking at a large prairie. During dry periods, the lake is a prairie. Real estate marketing being what it is, though, the community is still called "Killearn Lakes" and the major road is called "Deer Lake Road." There isn't a Deer Lake in the area, but there are plenty of white-tailed deer, enough deer that Deer Lake Road and Deerlake Middle School have names that are halfway appropriate. And enough deer that Deerlake Middle School's annual Deer Run 5K has an entirely appropriate name.


Rik Pool, a recent alumnus of the Bishop Moore High cross-country team, won the 2014 Deer Run 5K on Saturday morning, November 1, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19:05. At 20:04 Duane Evans of Crawfordville, Florida, was the runner-up and first master runner. 14-year-old Tallahassee runner Logan Venclauskas was third in 20:40.


Nine-year-old Layla Thompson was the top runner in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 22:01. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the second female finisher, coming in ninth overall in 22:14. Deerlake Middle School cross-country runner Emily Molen was third on the women's side, finishing 10th overall in 23:20.


91 athletes finished Deerlake Middle School's 2014 Deer Run 5K, while another 69 ran a one-mile fun run.

Guyas rolls and Heddaeus sets record at Run For Lawson

The plans are published. Welaunee Plantation is going to be developed. Welaunee Boulevard is going to be extended all the way to Interstate 10 and beyond and the land will fill up with houses, apartments, businesses, streets, and trails. That's in the future, though. In the meantime you can still make an annual tour of the "toe" of Welaunee Plantation in the Run For Lawson.


At the fourth annual Run For Lawson on Saturday morning, 1 November 2014, Paul Guyas didn't pause to appreciate the scenery. Winning by almost 600 meters, Guyas ran the 10K cross-country race in 38:58. Behind him, Mike Peymann edged Joel Piotrowski for second place and the top master spot, 41:23 to 41:29.


Jillian Heddaeus wasn't stopping to smell the goldenrod, either. Placing ninth overall, Heddaeus not only won the women's title by more than a kilometer, but also set a new women's course record of 45:32, breaking Renee Cox's 2013 record of 45:53. Jill Sweeny was second in the women's standings, coming in 21st overall in 51:46. Beth Culley was the third woman finisher and first woman master, 22nd overall in 52:10.

The Run For Lawson 10K course takes runners twice around a loop through the Welaunee Plantation "toe," possibly the toughest 6.2-mile run in the Tallahassee area. For athletes who prefer a smaller dose of cross-country running, there's the Run For Lawson 5K. Rickards High senior Evan Wilson was the fastest runner in the junior race, posting 19:16 for a single trip around the loop. Aaron Taylor was second in 19:51, and Nick Trombetta third in 20:44. The fastest master runner in the 5K was Dewey Hudson, ninth overall in 23:00.


Placing fourth overall, Maclay sophomore Molly McCann won the women's division for a fourth straight year, and for the fourth straight year she set a new women's course record. This time around the new standard was 20:47, well under the 21:23 McCann ran in 2013. Brittney Barnes was second in the women's standings, finishing sixth overall in 22:18. Montford Middle School cross-country runner Emily Culley was third in the women's competition, coming in 13th overall in 23:28. Sky Feller was the first female master runner, 41st overall in 28:26.


The Run For Lawson is hosted each year by the Lawson Mayfield Memorial Foundation in memory of Lawson Mayfield, who lost her life to bacterial meningitis when she was 18. Proceeds from the event benefit the National Meningitis Association. Finish line and timing services for both races were provided by RaceSmith.com.

A Wakulla day at District 2-2A

The Wakulla War Eagles swept the team titles at the District 2-2A Cross Country Championships, hosted by Rickards High School at the Apalacheee Regional Park Cross Country Course on Saturday morning, 1 November 2014. It was the third year in a row that the War Eagles had swept the meet. Wakulla sophomore Haleigh Martin won the girls' race in 20:01, and Rickards junior Solomon Stevens led the boys' race with a 17:23.


The harriers of FSUS, Marianna, Rickards, Taylor County, and Wakulla got a preview of the State Meet course in their District 2-2A races. More than track and more than road racing, cross country is ruled by conditions. Conditions were great the morning of the District Meet. ARPXC was in excellent shape and the temperatures were in the 40s. A stiff wind was blowing from the west, a tailwind for the athletes on the top part of the course. On the bottom part of the course, the runners were sheltered from any headwind by the woods.


"Four of our girls ran PRs," reported one of the coaches.


Haleigh Martin didn't run her best time, but she did run fast. The Wakulla sophomore headed to the front right after the start of the race. Taylor County junior Meagan Giddens, the 2012 District 2-2A champion, ran with Martin during the first 800 meters. After that, Martin took command, leading by 40 seconds at the halfway point. The second half was more of the same, as Martin went on to win by over 300 meters in 20:01. Giddens took second in 21:29. Wakulla senior Lydia Wiedeman was third in 22:03, and the War Eagles also got top ten finishes from junior Constance Lewis (5th, 22:10), sophomore Juliana Prestia (8th, 23:08), and sophomore Emily Lawrence (9th, 23:54). That gave Wakulla a near-perfect score of 17 points and the 2014 District 2 girls' title.


Led by the 23:05 seventh-place finish of eighth-grader Summer Williams, Florida State University School took second in the team standings with 45 points. Both Wakulla and FSUS advance to the Region 1-2A Championship on Thursday, 6 November 2014 in Pensacola. Meagan Giddens also qualified for the Region, as did Rickards athletes Mezindia Nkembo and Carina Richardson, Mariana's Natasha Smith, Taylor County's Ruth Anne McGehee, and Marianna's Amanda Carnley.

Unlike the girls' race, the boys' 5K was far from over at the halfway point. A tight group of five runners crested The Wall together the first time around the course--Rickards Raiders Solomon Stevens, Abraham Grandison, and Evan Garrison, plus Bryce Cole and Lane Williams of the Wakulla War Eagles. Williams dropped off the pace, then Garrison. With a kilometer to go, the fight for the lead was down to Stevens, Grandison, and Cole.


Solomon Stevens broke away on the second trip up The Wall, leaving Grandison and Cole fighting for second place. Stevens charged home to win in 17:23, while Cole outran Grandison on the homestretch to take second, 17:29 to 17:37. Rickards junior Evan Garrison edged Wakulla senior Lane Williams for fourth, 17:54 to 17:55, giving the Raiders three of the top four places. However, the next three finishers after Williams were the next three scorers for the War Eagles--junior Evan Guarino (6th, 18:24), senior Travis Parks (7th, 18:29), and senior James Piotrowski (8th, 18:44). With that, Wakulla had 28 points, the District 2-2A boys' title, and a spot on the starting line in the Region 1-2A meet. Rickards and Florida State University School also advanced to Region, respectively placing second with 42 points and third with 69 points.

Tallahassee runners fly at FLYRA

Maclay's Clay Milford is the 2014 FLYRA Middle School Boys' State Cross-Country Champion. At Holloway Park in Lakeland, Florida, Milford won the 3K title race in 9:56.30, winning by over ten seconds. The Maclay boys were third in the team standings and the Fairview Middle School boys were 20th.


Deerlake's Lawton Campbell (14th, 11:35.80) and HCES's Katherine Resavage (18th, 11:40.50) were the top Tallahassee athletes in the girls' race. The HCES girls' team placed third.


It was the fifth annual Florida Youth Running Association Championships, an event that has become a fixture since it was established in 2010. 261 athletes and 28 teams from every corner of the state competed in the boys race. The girls' race featured 223 harriers and 25 teams. The FLYRA was established to promote cross country to middle school athletes with a goal of improving the sport at all levels. Based on the alumni of that first FLYRA championship, you could say that the project has been successful. The first FLYRA boys champion, Kurt Convey, is a senior on the Miami Coral Reef High cross-country team and an All-State performer. Tallahassee's Raa Middle School took the team title at that first race, and one of their runners was Sukhi Khosla, the defending FHSAA-3A cross country champion as well as the 2014 FHSAA-3A champ in the 1600 and the 3200. Daesha Rogers, the first winner of the FLYRA girl's race, was second in the 2013 FHSAA-2A Girls' Cross Country State Final as a Miami Jackson frosh.


Pine Crest seventh-grader Yared Tsion won the 2014 FLYRA girls' race, blazing a 10:39 3K and winning by nearly half a minute. Yared was joined in the top ten by another member of her school's "Panther Nation" team, Mahdere Yared, sixth in 11:18. Behind the Yareds, the Panther Nation scored a winning team total of 81 points. Led by the 11:38 16th place performance of Savannah Schwab, Tavares Middle School placed second in the girls' team standings with 108 points. The Holy Comforter girls were third with 132 points on the strength of the performances of Katherine Resavage (18th, 11:41), Hannah Hosay (34th, 12:04), Avery Smith (51st, 12:28), Ella Thames (61st, 12:36), Elizabeth Calabro (72nd, 12:44), Hailey Hobbs (80th, 12:50), and Emma McGibany (110th, 13:10).


Tallahassee's Swift Creek Middle School was represented by seventh-graders Alyson Churchill and Megan Churchill, who placed 20th in 11:44 and 33rd in 12:02. Seventh-grader Caitlin Wilkey was Tallahassee Montford's entry in the race; she was 24th in 11:46. Eighth-grader Kenzie Mazziotta (31st, 12:00) and sixth-grader Lindsay James (32nd, 12:01) ran for Tallahassee Maclay in the championship race.


Maclay ace Clay Milford won it all in the boys' race, but Belen Jesuit put two runners in the top ten--Henrique Souza (8th, 10:27) and Sebastian Roa (9th, 10:29--plus another in the top twenty--Rodrigo Madiedo (17th, 10:37). That set up Belen's championship-winning total of 47 points. Hunter Boyd of Tavares Middle School came in 24th in 10:47. 25 seconds later Tavares had their fifth runner across the finish line and had squeaked by Maclay for second place, 92 to 93.


Holy Comforter's sole entry in the boys' race was Joseph Ashebo, who placed 12th in 10:32. Montford Middle had four runners in the race--Bryant McKnight (46th, 11:07), AJ Hodges (67th, 11:15), Hawthorne Hay (147th, 12:05), and Isaiah Estomos (209th, 13:13). Fairview's Charles Hruda (128th, 11:54), Townshend Porcher (152nd, 12:08), Alexander Gilliam (154th, 12:09), Jalen Greenwood (162nd, 12:17), Christopher Robsinson (180th, 12:30), and Jakeim Plummer (184th, 12:36) combined for 521 points, putting the Falcons 20th in the state.

Touchton and Faletti fleetest at FSECC 5K

On Thursday, 30 October 2014, folks in Southwood out for a morning walk around the Central Park Lake may have been puzzled by the site of Trevor Touchton being chased by a man dressed as a Mexican wrestler. It was the day before Halloween, though. It was also the day of the Florida State Employees Charitable Campaign's 14th annual 5K race. For any bystander who was left wondering, the luchador never caught Touchton, who went on to win the race.


Touchton has years of distance running experience, competing for Swift Creek Middle School, Lincoln High School, and United States Military Academy. He had been away from it for for a few weeks though.


"I had surgery back in August so I'm seeing how I'm coming back," explained Touchton.


The recovery is going well. Touchton ran a course record 16:19 in the race, winning by over a minute. The Lincoln alumnus took the lead early, had the race wrapped up by the end of the first mile, then kept pushing toward the finish.


Behind him, second place went to 2012 FSECC champion Bryan Koon. Koon was the fastest master runner in the race, covering the course in 17:28 in spite of being dressed as the notorious Mexican wrestler, El Jefe del Desastre. Koon did wear the Luchador costume better than Jack Black in Nacho Libre, although he did make some compromises for speed.


"I left the cape and belt off during the race," said Koon.


Meaghan Faletti wasn't fleeing any luchadores in the women's competition, but she did post a swift 20:58 win, placing seventh overall and finishing nearly 800 meters ahead of the next woman. Tinffany Hersey was the women's runner up, coming in 20th overall in 24:30. Becky Sponholtz was the third woman and first woman master, 22nd overall in 24:46.


255 athletes finished the 2014 FSECC 5K.

Blountstown boys and Wewahitchka girls repeat as District 2-1A cross country champs

Cross country teams are tested every time they race, but the important weighing comes at the end of the season. For the class 1A high schools of the Apalachicola River valley, that weighing came on Wednesday morning, 29 October 2014, in Blountstown's Sam Atkins Park. It was the FHSAA District 2-1A Cross-Country Meet, and it would determine which teams and athletes advanced to the Region 1 championships.


Racing started at 9:00 AM with the boys' 5K. Cottondale sophomore Garry Barnes won the race by over 100 meters, taking the District title with a 17:37. The defending District 2-1A champion, Blountstown senior Thomas Howell, was second in 18:00. Right behind Howell was Wewahitchka Gator sophomore Elijah Sarmiento, third in 18:02.


Two of Howell's Blountstown teammates, sophomore Tyreek Sumner and frosh Jesse Boyd, took fourth and fifth in 18:18 and 18:28. Blountstown's next two scorers were William Price, 15th in 20:07, and Alfredo Puente, 16th in 20:17. After that, the Tigers had a team total of 42 points and the 2014 District title. The top four teams earned the right to compete at the Region 1 meet. Cottondale was second with 61 points, Wewahitchka third with 77, and Graceville fourth with 125; those teams joined Blountstown in qualifying for Region 1 at Sunnyhill Farms in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 8 November 2014.

With six teams competing in the girls' race, only three would advance to Region. Wewahitchka frosh Sha Maria Cole did her part to see that the Gators made it to Region 1; the 2012 District champ, Cole won the 2014 race in 22:17. Cottondale seventh-grader Valerie Sampson, the 2013 District champ, edged Altha seventh-grader Bobbi Finuff for the runner-up spot, 23:09 to 23:12. Port St. Joe eighth grader Quinci Elphinstone and Blountstown frosh Bailey Johnson battled for fourth, with Elphinstone prevailing 23:41 to 23:42.


In addition to Cole, the Gators had seniors McKenna Waters (6th, 23:50) and Brittany Griffin (8th, 23:54) in the top ten. Frosh Rylee Waters (19th, 25:26) and eighth-grader Rayanna Penix (20th, 25:27) rounded out the Wewahitchka top five, giving the Gators 48 points and the 2014 District 2-1A title, their fourth in a row. Behind Valerie Sampson, Cottondale totaled 54 points to take second.


One qualifying spot remained. The Blountstown Tigers had 63 points, the third best score, but so did Altha's Wildcats. In high school cross country, when the scores are the same place is decided by the sixth runner. Blountstown's sixth runner, sophomore Keirstin Mosher (23rd, 25:53) finished ahead of Altha's, giving the Tigers third place in the team standings and a spot on the starting line at the Region 1 meet. Demonstrating that every athlete on a cross-country team counts, Blountstown's seventh runner, junior Dawn Starr (28th, 27:05), had already forced the tie score by finishing five seconds ahead of Altha's fifth runner, adding a point to the Wildcats' score. No place, no point, no second, and no runner can be ignored in cross country, the greatest sport in the world.

Rebekah Smith and Andrew Jackson lead another Thomasville sweep in Region 1-AA

It's not true that Thomasville High teams always win the Region 1-AA cross-country meet. Why, just five years ago the Fitzgerald boys took home the 2009 Region 1 title. Of course, even that year the Thomasville boys were no worse than second, and the Thomasville girls won their race. And every year since then the Thomasville Bulldogs have claimed the Region titles, both boys and girls.


This year was no exception. The Bulldogs pulled off yet another sweep of the Region 1-AA team titles, this time on the course at Pebble Hill on Wednesday morning, 29 October 2014.


The Bulldogs' big day started with the girls' 5K race at 10:30 AM. Just four day earlier, Thomasville junior Rebekah Smith had won the Yellow Jacket Invitational, the first cross-country victory of her career. She must have liked the idea, because was first across the finish line again in the Region 1-AA race, coming in nearly a minute ahead of the next runner at 22:11. Is winning becoming a habit for Smith?


"I hope so!" she laughed.


Emily Boyd of Berrien placed second in 23:08. Boyd was joined in the top ten by two other Berrien Rebels, Janna Jernigan (4th, 23:25) and Haley Jernigan (10th, 25:17). But Thomasville had three other runners in the top ten--juniors Jacara Hayes (5th, 24:16) and Rebecca Jane White (7th, 24:40) plus frosh Miyah Beard (9th, 25:09). And while the Rebels were still waiting for their fourth scorer, junior Demetria Miley crossed the finish line for the Bulldogs, 11th in 25:30. That gave the Thomasville girls 37 points and a seventh straight Region 1 title for the Bulldogs. Berrien was second with 43 points, Pelham third with 84, and Fitzgerald fourth with 104. Those were the four teams that qualified for the GHSA State Championship on 8 November 2014 in Carrollton, Georgia.

Thomasville senior Travet "TJ" Witherspoon charged out into the lead right from the start of the GHSA Region 1 boys' race. For the first mile, Berrien sophomore Haven Gilbert ran as if he were stuck to Witherspoon, but the Bulldog senior broke away during the second mile, arriving at the two-mile mark with a ten-second lead. Meanwhile, another Thomasville senior, Andrew Jackson, had moved into second place. In each of four earlier races this season, Jackson had finished behind Witherspoon. During the third mile of this race, though, Jackson made Witherspoon's lead disappear. With 400 meters to go Jackson was the one with the ten-second lead. He continued to widen that lead on his way to an 18:29 win and the GHSA Region 1-AA title. Witherspoon held off Bryce Tucker of Berrien 18:47 to 18:49, taking second. Thomasville senior Neil White was fourth in 18:59. The Bulldogs' next two runners were junior Alex Perralta (9th, 20:16) and senior Jacob Bruhn (15th, 21:06), giving Thomasville a winning total of 31 points and a trip to the State Meet in Carrollton. Also qualifying for State were Berrien, second with 42 points; Seminole County, third with 82; and Fitzgerald, fourth with 107.
