Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2019 (through August 23)

After a summer where there were very, very few 5K road races in Tallahassee, we're about to go into a busy fall. In September alone there are three five-kilometer events scheduled on certified courses--the inaugural Race For Trace 5K on 7 September 2019, the Sickle Cell 5K on 14 September 2019, and the Women's Distance Festival on 21 September 2019. With three upcoming races on fast courses, it seems like a good time to update the Tallahassee road 5K performance lists.

That's not to say that athletes were idle over the summer. At the Firecracker 5K on 4 July 2019, Michael Niezgoda improved his standing to eighteenth on the men's list by winning the race in 17:43. Zach DeVeau kept himself in the men's top 25 by running 17:54 at the Firecracker 5K, good for 23rd on the list.


On the women's side, Ann Centner won the Firecracker 5K in 18:03, giving her the three fastest women's performances of the year on the Tallahassee roads. In the same race, Alyson Churchill ran 18:55 to debut on the 2019 women's list at #6. Churchill was Tallahassee top woman performer in the road 5K in 2016, running 18:00. Her sister, Megan Churchill ran 20:54 at Firecracker, grabbing the twentieth spot on the list. Mo Palmer, third in the women's standings at Firecracker, is ranked for the first time in 2019, eighth with a 19:45. Caroline Willis also broke into the women's rankings with a Firecracker 5K performance, running 20:20 and earning the fourteenth spot on the list.

As for September's 5K events, the inaugural Race For Trace 5K will be held on the same USATF-certified course (FL11132EBM) as the Trent Trot 5K. Stan Linton ran 16:10 on that route in 2013, Seeley Gutierrez owns the top women's time on the course, the 18:49 she ran in 2015. The Sickle Cell 5K bills itself as "the fastest race in town," but hasn't produced the fastest time in town during the years that I've been doing these rankings, 2012 to 2018. Still, Chris Haynes and Ricardo Estremera ran 15:16 there in 2018 while women's champ Amy Hines posted an 18:07, and none of those are times to sneeze at. The 2016 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival had the fastest time in Tallahassee that year, Stan Linton's winning 15:29. The top women's time in 2013, Kayleigh Tyerman's 16:51, also came from the Women's Distance Festival. In October, the UPLIFT 5K debuts on the same Tallahassee Community College course as the Run For The Cookies, a race where Stan Linton ran 2014's fastest time (15:24). The Run For The Cookies also produced the fastest women's times in 2017 and 2018--Ani Veltcheva went 17:35 in the former year and Adriana Piekarewicz ran 17:59 in the latter.


Those aren't the only three races on the schedule where athletes can log a ranked performance. Through the remainder of 2019, I'll be considering results from any race that meets these criteria:

• The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
• The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
• The race has to have published results
• I have to see the results
