Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2019 (through September 21)

With another week left in September, 2019, there have already been three 5K road races on USATF-certified courses in Tallahassee, Florida--one each weekend. There's another weekend with another such race left in the month, but Tallahassee's athletes have already revised the city's road 5K performance lists for the year. Let's take a look.

Paul Allen
Paul Allen

Paul Allen broke into the men's top ten with a winning 16:02 at Gulf Winds Track Club's Sickle Cell 5K on 14 September 2019, fast enough to put Allen fifth on the list. Bryce Parry also made it onto the men's list at the Sickle Cell 5K, but he moved into the top ten by running 16:56 on 21 September 2019 at Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K, where he finished runner-up to Allen. Michael Niezgoda moved from 18th up to 14th by running 17:21 at the Women's Distance Festival 5K. Zach DeVeau went 17:53 at the Women's Distance Festival, his best time in 2019 by a second, but dropped from 23rd to 24th on the men's list.

David Barney and Ricardo Estremera

Even after three weeks of September racing, David Barney and Ricardo Estremera still top the men's list with the 14:39 they ran at Gulf Winds Track Club's Palace Saloon 5K, back on 13 April 2019. Gary Droze ran 17:53 at the same race, which is still the fastest performance by a master runner in Tallahassee during 2019.

Ann Centner
Ann Centner

Ann Centner is also still on top of the women's list with the 17:38 she ran at Palace. It's almost like Palace is--dare I say it--the fastest race in town. But Centner wasn't idle in September, running 18:00 at the Women's Distance Festival 5K and 18:09 at the Sickle Cell 5K. Currently she has five of the city's top six women's performance during 2019.

Running 19:58 at the Women's Distance Festival 5K, Katie Sherron went under 20:00 for the first time in 2019 and held steady at eleventh on the women's list. Alyssa Moore ran 20:07 at the Sickle Cell 5K, putting her at the twelfth spot on the women's list. Brittney Barnes ran her best mark of the year so far, a 20:29 at the Sickle Cell 5K, moving from nineteenth to eighteenth in the women's top 25. Master runner Alison Thumm broke into the top 25 at #24 with a 21:28 at the Race For Trace 5K on 7 September 2019. Another master runner, Lourena Maxwell, grabbed the 25th spot on the women's list with a 21:31 at the Sickle Cell 5K.

The fastest woman master so far this year, though, is still Stephanie Liles-Weyant, the Tallahassee triathlete who ran 20:31 at the Palace Saloon 5K.

Those top times aren't immovable, though. Some athlete might turn a top time before 31 December 2019. It could happen at the Uplift 5K on 19 October 2019, the Marching Chiefs 5K on 27 October 2019, the Deerlake 5K or Race For Pace 5K on 2 November 2019, the VetFest 5K on 11 November 2019, the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K on 28 November 2019, or any other five-kilometer road race meeting thse criteria:
  • The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
  • The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
  • The race has to have published results
  • I have to see the results
Meanwhile, here are 2019's current lists, the top 25 men and top 25 women:

Ann Centner goes 18:00 on Tallahassee's hills to win the Women's Distance Festival 5K

It wasn't exactly cool and dry in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 21 September 2019, but it wasn't quite as hot nor nearly as humid as it had been. Encouraged by the pleasant change in the weather, Ann Centner tore through an 18:00 5K in Indianhead Acres, winning Gulf Winds Track Club's 38th annual Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival. Paul Allen won the men's 5K, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16:17.

Allen may have run a bit faster, but Centner crossed the finish line first. At the Women's Distance Festival, the women start the 5K in a separate wave, five minutes before the men. The race is part of the Road Runners Club of America Women's Distance Festival series of races, founded to celebrate and encourage women's running. The first Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival was held in 1982, a time when women were a small minority of the field in most road races. Today, it's not unusual for the majority of athletes in a race to be women. Still, in most of those events, the women are running with male competitors. That's not the case at the Women's Distance Festival.

"It was different, running all by myself," said Centner.

Centner did spend most of the race by herself. The women's wave of the 5K started at 8:00 AM, with the athletes headed north on East Indianhead Drive. By the first turn, half a kilometer into the run, Centner was already 70 meters ahead of the field and pulling away. Dr. Katie Sherron, winner of the race in 2015 and 2017, was part of the pursuit.

"We couldn't see Ann after a mile and a half," said Sherron.

Brittney Barnes, Alyssa Moore

As Centner disappeared from view, Sherron, Alyssa Moore, and Brittney Barnes raced for the runner-up spot.

"We raced together till somewhere after a mile and a half, where Brittney fell off," said Sherron. "Then near two miles I got away from Alyssa."

Extending her lead to nearly half a kilometer, Centner raced home in a winning 18:00. Sherron was second in 19:58. Moore and Barnes ended up in a battle for third, with Moore prevailing 20:30 to 20:33. Nancy Stedman was the first master runner in the women's race, placing seventh in 22:45.

Centner's time was her third fastest of the year. 18:00 was also faster than the 18:09 that she had run a week earlier at the Sickle Cell 5K, a nearly flat course. Bryce Parry, who won the men's 5K at the 2018 Women's Distance Festival, confirmed that the route through Indianhead Acres featured a hill or two.

"Especially that one after two miles!" said Parry.

By two miles Parry was chasing Paul Allen. Early in the race, Allen was setting the pace for a lead group that included Parry, Tristan Cravello, and Michael Niezgoda. With a kilometer to go, Allen was well out ahead. Parry was starting to pull away from Cravello, and Niezgoda had already dropped back. Unchallenged, Allen made it home first in 16:17. Parry was second in 16:56, just ahead of Cravello at 17:02. Niezgoda took fourth in 17:21. Dr. Hong-Guo Yu was the fastest master runner in the men's race, seventh in 18:40.

Kyra Swart and Patrick Koon saddle up at the Mustang Stampede Cross-Country Meet

There was a lot of Deerlake at the Mustang Stampede Middle School Cross-Country Meet on Thursday evening, 19 September 2019. Montford Middle School hosted the seventh annual meet, but it was the Deerlake Middle School Bucks who took team titles in both the girls' 3K race and the boys' 3K race. Deerlake sixth-grader Kyra Swart placed first in the girls' race. Instead of a Deerlake athlete, though, the top spot in the boys' race when to Fairview eighth-grader Patrick Koon, his fourth win in four outings during the Leon County Schools' 2019 middle school cross-country season.

Madison Sims, Kyra Swart
Madison Sims & Kyra Swart

Competition opened just after 6:00 PM with the girls' 3K. 99 athletes from eight different school scrambled for the lead. When the dust had cleared, though, Fort Braden seventh-grader Madison Sims was setting the pace, with Kyra Swart of Deerlake just behind her. Sims was still leading near the one-kilometer mark, where the athletes turned into a wooded section of the course. Coming out of the woods nearly a kilometer later, Swart was ahead.

Sims wasn't going away. Just past the two-kilometer mark, she overtook Swart. Sims was still ahead with less than 500 meters to go, but Swart was less than ten meters back. It was still a race.

Ella Holman

And it was a race all the way to the finish line, where Swart outkicked Sims to eke out a 13:03 to 13:05 win, the first of the season for the Deerlake sixth-grader. It was also the best showing of the LCS season for Sims, who had previously placed sixth at the Fort Braden Run and the ARPXC Invitational. Deerlake eighth-grader Ella Holman passed Sophia Youngberg, a Montford seventh-grader, late in the race to take third in 13:26. Youngberg was fourth in 13:29.

Sophia Youngberg

It was Montford' home course, and in addition to Youngberg, the Mustangs also put seventh-graders Aditi Mukhirala (7th, 13:59) and Clara Thompson (8th, 14:04) into the top ten. But four athletes cracked the top ten for Deerlake--Swart, Youngberg, eighth-grader Leah Kiros (9th, 14:07), and seventh-grader Callie Byington (10th, 14:17). When sixth-grader London Mellen crossed the line in 14:49 to take seventeenth for the Bucks, the Deerlake girls had 40 points and their first win of the season. Montford was a close second with 56 points. Led by the fifth place, 13:34 finish of eighth-grader Ava Jones, Swift Creek was fourth in the seven-team field with 56 points.

"I didn't think I ran well today," said Patrick Koon, shortly after the boys' 3K.

Patrick Koon

Some athletes are driven by discontent. It was difficult to find fault with Koon's performance, though. The Fairview eighth-grader won his race at the Mustang Stampede by close to 150 meters, leading from wire to wire and running 10:54. Behind him, though, there was a race on for second. Two eighth-graders, Justin Greenwood and Jackson Rowe of Montford, were in a dogfight all the way to the finish line. Rowe had been close to Greenwood all season, but not this close. The home course wasn't a factor, either.

"We just rebuilt the course this week," said Rowe. "I only got to run the course three times. Last time I was slacking a little bit, but this time I changed my game plan."

Greenwood made his own adjustments to Rowe's challenge.

Justin Greenwood, Jackson Rowe

"I just thought, I'm going to pace off of him and then kick it," said Greenwood.

Greenwood's plan passed the test. The Fairview runner held off Rowe on the homestretch to take second, 11:28 to 11:29.

Rowe was followed across the finish line by a whole lot of Deerlake. The Bucks took the next three places, with eighth-grader Brooks Bowden fourth in 11:41, eighth-grader Davis McNeely fifth in 11:49, and seventh-grader Danny Mauldin sixth in 11:49. Eighth-grader Cade Swart also cracked the top ten for Deerlake, nabbing ninth in 11:52. Eighth-grader Jonah Blay finished the scoring for the Bucks, taking twelfth in 12:06. The Deerlake boys had 36 points, putting them first among the eight teams in the race.

Fairview was second with 40 points. On the boys' side, Fairview and Deerlake have split the first four meets of the season, with each team claiming two wins. The boys from Montford, the host school, were third with 87 points.

The middle schools of Leon County Schools are close to the conclusion of their 2019 cross-country season. Next up is the penultimate meet of the year, the Falcon Invitational at Phipps Park on Thursday evening, 26 September 2019.
