Leonardo Canete and Addie Vaughan tear it up at the Trailblazer Trot

Saturday morning, 12 March 2022, was a cool one in the Florida Panhandle, less like spring and more like the kind of weather you expect during cross-country season. Fortuitously, that was the morning of the fifth annual Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race in Ponce De Leon Springs State Park. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete won the race for the second year in a row, running 18:13 to successfully defend his 2021 title. Eleven-year-old Addie Vaughan of Westville, Florida was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 29:25.


Master runner Toby Hauser was the second runner across the finish line, posting a 21:42 on the trails. Josh Hall took third in 23:36.


Westville's Candy Vaughan was the first woman master and second female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 30:42. Vaughan was just a step ahead of Kassyn Pope, third in the women's standings at 30:43. Pope was eleventh overall.


40 athletes finished the 2022 Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race. Race Krewe of Auburn, Alabama timed the race.

David Jones and Ana Freitas were coming up roses at the Azalea Festival Run

Azaleas are blooming earlier in South Georgia, possibly due to milder winters. The flowers are often out in February now, with some azaleas showing color in January or even December. In Valdosta, Georgia the bulk of azalea blossoms still wait till March and the city's Azalea Festival. The early flowers are just a reminder to athletes to get ready for the Azalea Festival 5K. Valdosta's 21st annual Azalea Festival Run was Saturday morning, 12 March 2022, and David Jones won the event with a 19:47. Ana Freitas was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 27:43.


Hahira, Georgia's Aaron Farris took the runner-up spot with a 20:12. Twelve-year-old R. Thurston was third in 20:38. Steve Jones was the first master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:51.


Terry Cooper was the first woman master and second female finisher, Astra Weismore nabbed third in the women's standings, coming in seventeenth overall in 29:27.


75 athletes finished the 2022 Azalea Run. The race was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority.

Courtland Buntin and Genee Meleski season the Red Pepper Run with speed

Courtland Buntin didn't win the 2021 Red Pepper Run 5K. He placed second in the annual Saint George Island race, running 18:41 while Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete posted a winning 18:12. Buntin returned to Saint George Island on Saturday, 5 March 2022, but this time he wouldn't settle for runner-up. The Georgia College Bobcat cross-country runner went 17:33 this time, winning the race by nearly 400 meters. Master runner Genee Meleski was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing fifteenth overall in 24:48.


A pair of Wakulla High cross-country runners took the next two places after Buntin. Sophomore Andrew Nix placed second in 19:00, and junior Joseph Wiedeman was third in 19:17. Dave Shackleford was the first master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 22:51.


Eden Keene took second in the women's standings, placing eighteenth overall in 25:31. At 26:26, Cydney Szymanski was the third woman and 21st overall.


140 athletes finished Saint George Island's 2022 Red Pepper Run 5K.

Michael Rosato and Lisa Johnson make it a Gainesville sweep of the Race The Tortoise 5K

Gainesville, Florida triathlete Michael Rosato went 17:30 for 3.1 miles in O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 5 March 2022, winning the twelfth annual Race The Tortoise 5K. Finishing second overall behind Rosato, master runner Lisa Johnson took the women's title with a 20:00.


In a showdown of two athletes from High Springs, Florida, Timothy Guinn edged Soren Brockdorf for the second spot in the men's standings, 21:05 to 21:08. The two runners were third and fourth overall, and Brockdorf was the first male master.


In another close finish, master runner Rahn Huffstutler crossed the finish line fifth overall, just ahead of Mandy Harrell; both runners were clocked at 21:236. Harrell was second in the women's division. Third place on the women's side went to Tierra Dozier, tenth overall in 24:28. Thirteen-year-old Abbey Robinson was the fourth female finisher and thirteenth overall in 24:46. A seventh-grader, Robinson raced for the Ocala Distance Project during the 2021 cross-country season.


203 athletes finished the 2022 Race The Tortoise 5K. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed and scored the race.

Wyatt Stafford and Alison Wells were the talk of the Shamrock

Up through the fall of 2020, much of Wyatt Stafford's racing efforts at 5,000-meter came while competing in cross country for Aucilla Christian Academy. Stafford also made annual appearances in Monticello, Florida's hometown road race, the Kiwanis Melon Run 5K. On Saturday morning, 5 March 2022, the Aucilla Christian alum expanded his resume to include Killearn Estates' hometown road race, the Shamrock Scurry 5K. Stafford won the 33rd annual Scurry, racing the hilly 3.1 miles in 18:01. Alison Wells crossed the finish line half a minute later, winning the women's division in 18:36--the best mark by a woman at the Scurry since 2008.


Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the race; the Tallahassee athlete finished second overall in 18:13. Peter Failma, an alum of the Chiles High cross-country team, took third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 18:33.


Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master in the 5K, running 21:14 to place second in the women's standings and 22nd overall. Liles-Weyant had also been the first woman master at the Shamrock Scurry in 2017. Andi Vilardo, a seventh-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country squad, was third in the women's division and 36th overall in 22:49. Vilardo's time bettered her three earlier appearances in the Shamrock Scurry 5K, well under her previous best showing of 26:50 in the 2020 race.


383 athletes finished the 2022 Shamrock Scurry 5K, and another 122 completed the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the races.

Dylan Dixon and Brayden Bailey were tough on the trails at Heart-to-Heart

After two decades of conducting its Heart-to-Heart Run as a road race on the streets of Douglas, Georgia, Coffee Regional Medical Center moved the event to General Coffee State Park in 2020, transforming it into a trail race. When it comes to trail racing, bet on a cross-country runner. Two cross-country runners demonstrated that on Saturday morning, 26 February 2022, taking top honors in the Heart-to-Heart 10K Trail Race. Dylan Dixon, a junior-year harrier on the Bacon County High team, won the race by almost 400 meters, running 43:30. Brayden Bailey, a Coffee High senior, won the women's division of the 10K for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 48:27.


Miguel Rivas finished runner-up in the 6.1-mile race, going 45:16 on the trails. Vicente Guerrero was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 51:57. John Harrison was the top master runner and seventh male finisher, coming in eighth overall in 57:03.


Tabetha Duncan placed second on the women's side and tenth overall in 58:46. Kristy Music was the first woman master and third female finisher, eleventh overall in 59:39.


26 athletes finished the 2022 Heart-to-Heart 10K.

Twelve-year-old Mario Howard won the 5K at the 2022 Heart-to-Heart Run; his 25:44 was more than a minute and a half faster than the time he had posted in the 2021 race. Placing second overall in 26:22, Shawn Lee was the first master runner in the race, but only by a few steps. Right behind him at 26:26 was master runner Libby Dodd, the first woman in the 5K and third overall. Master runner Derrick Bailey was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 26:47.


Chloe Ferris, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at Coffee Middle School, placed second in the women's division and seventh overall in 29:48. Brooke Floyd was the third female finisher and ninth overall in 29:58.


91 athletes finished the 2022 Heart-to-Heart 5K.

In Dasher, Greg George and Maggie Weber win the Hospice Half-Mary

Dasher isn't the biggest city in Lowndes County, Georgia. It's a don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it town along US 41. But if you manage to avoid blinking as you speed along the highway, you'll notice that there's a two-lane track around the city hall and other municipal buildings. Between that and the city's name, you might conclude that Dasher is a place that loves running. You'd have been even more convinced of that affection if you happened to be in Dasher on Saturday morning, 19 February 2022, when the little city was hosting the eleventh annual Hospice Half Marathon. Greg George of Valdosta, Georgia won the 13.1-mile race by more than a mile, running 1:28:18. Bluffton, South Carolina master runner Maggie Weber was the first woman across the finish line, placing fifth overall in 1:38:11.


Jared Hammond of Bonaire, Georgia was the first master runner in the race as well as the overall runner-up, running 1:36:03. At 1:36:58, Jose Trejo, a master runner from Fitzgerald, Georgia, placed third overall.


Master runer Terri Prange of Good Thunder, Minnesota took second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 1:56:06. Valdosta master runner Jennifer Varilek was the third woman, thirteenth overall in 1:57:14.


Every athlete in the Hospice Half Marathon was certain that they were going a full 13.1 miles, because the course is USATF certified (GA18003WC). 45 people finished the race. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdsota, Georgia timed and scored the event.

Blazers Brishen House and Angie Cipriani ran blazing times at the Blazin' Love 5K

After Valdosta State University's 2021 cross-country season, Brishen House was awarded as Most Valuable Athlete on the men's team, and Angie Cipriani as the same on the women's squad. A few months later, on 12 February 2022, the duo led a VSU sweep of the sixth annual Blazin' Love 5K. House took first overall, running 15:50 for 3.1 miles on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. Cipriani topped the women's field with an 18:11.


VSU's Charlie Eaton, recipient of his team's 2021 Blazer Award, took second in the race with a 16:30. A few steps back, Dalton Pender, a Blazer hailing from Brunswick, Georgia, placed third in 16:34.


On the women's side, Angie Cipriani's 18:11 was not only good for sixth overall, it was also the fastest time ever run by a woman at the Blazin' Love 5K. Blazer harriers Leah Johnson and Samantha Murray ended their run in a close race for the women's runner-up spot. The advantage went to Johnson, recipient of the 2021 Blazer Award, 19:48 to 19:50. Johnson and Murray were eighth and ninth overall.


The Blazers swept overall honors, but the Kellys of Lake Park, Georgia swept the master runner honors. Ryan Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, was the fastest master in the race, coming in seventh overall in 19:45. Heather Kelly was the first master runner in the women's standings, running 32:34 to finish as the tenth woman and 28th overall.


42 athletes finished the 2022 Blazin' Love 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services. Proceeds of the race benefit the Valdosta State University Blazer cross-country teams.
