Madeline Frank |
"I felt pretty good, but I was alone out there," said Madeline Frank.
The "loneliness of the long distance runner" that Frank experienced in Tallahassee, Florida's Indianhead neighborhood on Saturday morning, 21 September 2024, was entirely of her own making. It was because she had run faster than her competitors in Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K--fast enough to have finished over 200 meters ahead of the rest of the field.
Stephanie Liles-Weyant |
As has become the annual procedure at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival, the women started in a wave at 8:00 AM, five minutes before the men's wave. At the first turn, 600 meters north of the starting line, Madeline Frank and Tallahassee master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant were already well ahead of the rest of the field, with Frank a few steps up on Liles-Weyant. Frank steadily turned those few steps first into a few dozen and then into many dozens on her way around the course to a 19:09 win.
Liles-Weyant was the first woman master runner in the 5K, placing second in 20:03. Another Tallahassee master runner, Vicky Droze, took third in 22:36.
Ryan Ziskinder |
In the men's wave, the loneliness started for Ryan Ziskinder right after the start. A Palm City, Florida athlete, Ziskinder got away from the men's field field almost immediately, after which the only athletes he encountered on the course were those who had started earlier in the women's wave. There were quite a few of those, though--Ziskinder caught everyone in that wave except for the first two women, Madeline Frank and Stephanie Liles-Weyant. The first man over the finish line, Ziskinder ran 15:40--the fastest time at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival since 2016, when Stan Linton when 15:29.
Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee, the winner of the men's division at the race in 2021 and 2023, was the first male master, coming in runner-up to Ziskinder in 17:42. Elijah Oquendo took third in the men's wave, running 18:11.

71 women and 66 men finished Gulf Winds Track Club's 2024 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. Another four athletes completed a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
