Meagan Giddens claims TCC's first state cross-country title

It was Saturday morning, 28 October 2017. For the second year in a row, the Florida College System Activities Association held a state championship in women's cross-country. For the second year in a row, that state championship race was also the NJCAA Region 8 championship. For the second year in a row, the race was at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. And for the second year in a row, the Bobcats of Pasco-Hernando State College won the team title. But for the first time ever, a Tallahassee Community College athlete took the individual championship, when Eagle sophomore Meagan Giddens won the 5K race in 20:07.

Meagan Giddens

"I was seeded third," said Giddens. "I wanted to get second. I was really happy to get first."

There were 37 athletes in the race that morning, up from the numbers in 2016 because of the addition of State College at Jacksonville to the field. Kylyn Burbine of Pasco-Hernando State set the pace during the first kilometer, closely followed by Kamryn Folger of South Florida State. The next three positions were held by Michaela Scruti of Florida State Jacksonville, Giddens of Tallahassee, and Quincy Mayer of Pasco-Hernando. The starting line is close to the highest part of the course, and much of the first two kilometers were spent descending to the lowest part of the course. After that, it was time to start heading back uphill to complete the first of two loops.

"All the hill training made the difference," said Giddens, a Perry, Florida native. "The hills broke us up. That was the game changer. I felt strong going up the hills and I felt the other girls holding back."

Back on top of the course at the end of the third kilometer, Giddens had moved into second, trailed by Scruti and Burbine. Pasco-Hernando's Mayer had taken the lead. Mayer hadn't been cowed by the hills.

"We go to Saint Leo some Saturdays and run hills," explained Mayer. "I'm pretty confident on hills."

Michaela Scruti

Early in the fourth kilometer, Giddens made her move.

"I stayed in second until the two-mile mark," said Giddens.

"She started pulling away after the second mile," said Mayer. "And the gap kept getting bigger."

With a kilometer to go, Giddens had a lead of five seconds. By the finish line that had grown to seventeen seconds, as Giddens ran home with a winning time of 20:07. Mayer was second in 20:24, and Scruti third in 20:42. After Mayer, Pasco-Hernando's remaining four scorers were each in the top eight, with Burbine fourth in 20:51, Lauren Hale fifth in 21:28, Skylyn Acuna sixth in 21:40, and Annaliese Besaw eighth in 22:26. Those five gave the Bobcats a mathematically unbeatable team score of 25 points and the schools' second straight state title. South Florida State edged Tallahassee for second, 67 to 69. Led by the seventh-place 21:53 of Haley Grayson, Florida State College at Jacksonville scored 86 points, placing fourth in their debut at the State Championship. Behind team leader Chelsee Cook-McGee (18th, 24:13), Chipola was fifth in the team standings with 123 points.

National Junior College Athletic Association cross-country continues to grow in Florida. In 2015, three schools had women's teams and there was no state championship. In 2016, Tallahassee Community College hosted the first state championship and four teams competed. In 2017, five teams were in the state championship. And in 2018?

"By next year we'll have two more teams," said TCC Athletic Director Rob Chaney. "Florida Gateway College and Daytona State are adding women's cross-country."

"My goal is to bring the NJCAA championship to this course right here," added Chaney.

Caleb Pottorff goes 15:30, Katie Sherron 18:34 in Apalachee Regional Park

Sustainable Tallahassee's seventh annual Trash Dash 5K came second on a two-event bill at Tallahassee, Florida's Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course, following the NJCAA Region 8 Cross-Country Championship. In cinema, the second half of a double feature is considered inferior, the lowly "B Movie." At a concert, however, the first performers on stage are a warm-up act; the headliner follows. There isn't such a convention for cross-country runs, and I'm not going to choose which race at ARPXC on Saturday morning, 28 October 2017, was the main event. I'm just going to note that Caleb Pottorff won the Trash Dash in 15:30, and that Katie Sherron took the women's title in 18:34.

Caleb Pottorff
Caleb Pottorff

Pottorff, a first-year student at Florida State University, is no stranger to the course at Apalachee Regional Park. As a member of the Lincoln Park Academy cross-country team, Pottorff raced at ARPXC in 2013, 2015, and 2016 in the State Cross-Country Meet. At the 2016 State Meet he won the class 2A title in 15:08.12, the fastest 5K posted in a high school race at ARPXC during that year.

In that 2016 race, Pottorff had been pushed by Bolles School sophomore Charles Hicks, a close second in 15:09.13. No one was challenging Pottorff at the Trash Dash, though. He led from start to finish, the only athlete to run sub-16:00 that morning. There were five other sub-17:00 performances, though. Tyler Dau, another Florida State frosh, took second in 16:03. Tom Hogarty, a Florida State grad student, took third in 16:19. Jacksonville University alum Jeremy McDermet placed fourth in 16:28. Tallahassee triathlete Charlie Johnson, just two weeks after competing in the Ironman World Championships, ran 16:36 for fifth. Matthew Butler was sixth in 16:58. Thirteenth overall in 18:38, Carter Hay was the fastest master runner in the 5K.

Women's champ Katie Sherron, a Florida State University economics professor, also considers herself a friend of Apalachee Regional Park.

"It's a nice day at the ARP," said Sherron after her win. "It's always a nice day at the ARP. I like the ARP."

Katie Sherron
Katie Sherron

She had every reason to like ARPXC that morning. Her winning 18:34 was her fastest time yet on Tallahassee's most famous cross-country course. Behind Sherron, Chiles High sophomore Emily Molen edged Clearwater High Alumnus Mariah Zupan for second in the women's standings, 21:01 to 21:05. Molen and Zupan were 32nd and 33rd overall. Kenya Rich was the first woman master and twelfth female finisher, 54th overall in 22:58.

After 3.1 miles around Apalachee Regional Park, Sherron is looking forward to something a bit longer--about ten miles longer, actually.

Emily Molen

"We've got a half marathon next weekend," said Sherron. "It's in Savannah. I'm hoping for a PR."

171 athletes finished the 2017 Trash Dash 5K, the most ever in the seven-year history of the event. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed the race.

High school cross-country standouts Norman and Tabb win Joyce's Jog

Joyce's JogAt the annual Joyce's Jog 5K, it's no longer unusual for high school cross-country runners to sweep the top places. In fact, it's getting to be routine. In 2015 Dustin Reynolds of Seminole County High won the men's title in the Donalsonville, Georgia road race, while Macy Williams of Seminole County was first in the women's standings. In 2016 Reynolds repeated as men's champ and Seminole County's Masey Tabb took the women's title. So it couldn't have been surprising that on Saturday morning, 21 October 2017, high school athletes once again came up winners at the eleventh annual Joyce's Jog. Early County High senior Tanner Norman was the first overall male, running 18:40 on the streets of Donalsonville. Seminole County sophomore Masey Tabb successfully defended her women's title, placing seventeenth overall in 22:48.

Norman had finished second in the race in 2016. He and Tabb weren't the only preps at the top of the results in 2017. Garrett Taylor, a Seminole County High sophomore, placed second overall in 18:53. Payton Price, another Seminole County sophomore, was third in 19:51. Early County frosh Rand McDonald was fourth in 20:07, and Seminole County junior Aubrey Johnson was fifth in 20:31. There were some more seasoned athletes in the race, though. Mark McCarra was the top master runner in the 5K, placing eighth overall in 21:38.

Close behind Masey Tabb, Southwest Georgia Academy frosh Katie Sheppard was second in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 22:54. Mary Hunt was the third woman and 26th overall in 24:30. Margaret Winkler of Blakely, Georgia was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 28th overall in 25:05. Winkler had been the women's champ of the Joyce's Jog in 2013 and 2014 and the top woman master in 2015.

97 athletes finished the 2017 Joyce's Jog 5K. The race is always held on the third Saturday in October, so expect the twelfth annual Joyce's Jog on 20 October 2018.

Seasoned athletes Kelly and Spry win the Cast Iron 5K

Quitman/Brooks County Skillet FestivalBy Saturday morning, 21 October 2017, the high school cross-country season was winding down in Georgia. For some schools, the State Championship Series was already under way. The Valdosta High cross-country team was looking forward to the Region 1-6A Meet in Leesburg, Georgia on 26 October 2017, the qualifier for the State Final. However, that was still five days away. That left plenty of time for Ryan Kelly, Valdosta High's coach, to head over to Quitman, Georgia for the seventh annual Cast Iron 5K. Kelly ran 18:35 on the streets of Quitman, winning the race for the second year in a row. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 23:45. 43 athletes won the seventh annual race.

Kelly wasn't the only athlete in the Cast Iron 5K with a Region Meet on the schedule. Berrien County High sophomore Morgan Bolmer was headed to the Region 1-2A Meet in Thomasville, Georgia on 26 October 2017. In Quitman, Bolmer finished second to Kelly in 18:57. Norman Park, Georgia's Yotzen Bruno was third in 19:51. Billy Taylor of Valdosta was the first master runner in the race, sixth overall in 25:58.

Valdsta's Lauren Bewley was second in the women's standings and seventh overall in 26:44. Stephanie Hurt of Greenville, Florida was the top woman master and third female finisher, eighth overall in 26:59.

43 athletes finished the 2017 Cast Iron 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Cravello and Terry take the Race For Readiness 5K

Since the Early Learning Coalition established its annual Race For Readiness 5K in 2014, the event has been run in three different Tallahassee, Florida locations. For the first two years, the race started at the Northwood Center. In 2016 the runners competed in Southwood. On Saturday morning, 21 October 2017, the fourth Race For Readiness was in Tom Brown Park. Changing the location didn’t prevent nearly 300 athletes from finding the event and running either the one-mile fun run or the 5K. Tristan Cravello won that 5K, running 18:57. Alyssa Terry was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 21:52.

Tristan Cravello
Tristan Cravello

The 5K got started just after 9:00 AM. Cravello charged to the front, leading the field along the Goose Pond Trail. A first-year student at Florida State University, Cravello was new to Tallahassee, but had been in town long enough to pick up his first road-racing win, a 17:38 at the 2017 Sickle Cell 5K in September. Cravello wasn’t challenged for the lead during the Race For Readiness, but he did have some problems along the way.

“It was just after the two-mile mark,” said Cravello. “The officials told me to go straight, but I was supposed to go left.”

Gary Droze
Gary Droze

After the misdirection, Cravello found his way back onto the course and crossed the finish line first in 18:57. Gary Droze, the Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach, was the top master runner in the race and second overall in 19:34. Tallahassee master runner Carter Hay took third in 19:43.

In the women’s competition, Lauren Aronson was the early leader, closely followed by Lucy Baird, her teammate.

Lauren Aronson
Lauren Aronson

“We’re part of the Seminole Striders Running Club at FSU,” said Aronson. “This is our first race of the season.”

It wasn’t the first race of the season for Alyssa Terry, who had won the women’s title at the Florida High 5K a week earlier, running 20:46. For the first half of the Race For Readiness, Terry wasn’t far behind Aronson and Baird.

“I was stalking them the whole way,” said Terry.

Alyssa Terry, Lucy Baird

Early in the second half of the 5K, Terry overtook Baird. Terry picked up the pace and caught Aronson less than 200 meters from the finish line, then raced home to take the women’s title in 21:52. Aronson was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 21:59, while Baird was the third woman and twelfth overall in 22:03.

With the 5K over, some of the athletes were already looking forward to their next race. Tristan Cravello has his scheduled.

“Next week I’m racing the Trash Dash 5K,” said Cravello. “At Apalachee Regional Park. I remember racing there in high school. It was just a remarkable experience.”

Indeed, Cravello made three trips to Apalachee Regional Park for the State Cross-Country Championship when he was racing for Doctors Charter High School. Lucy Baird, who made a trip to the State Meet in 2015, is also a fan of Apalachee Regional Park.

“I love that course!” said Baird. “I might check that out.”

171 athletes finished the 2017 Race For Readiness 5K, and another 124 completed the one-mile fun run. Age group and overall winners were awarded a medal and a folding camp chair. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
