Bolmer and Lisse grab some sky at the Above The Rim 5K

You don't have to be at a cross-country meet to race cross-country. For instance, the Above The Rim 5K in Valdosta, Georgia was a cross-country race that was open to any athlete interested in running on turf and trails. Nevertheless, it was runners from high school cross-country teams who dominated the Above The Rim field in Freedom Park on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017. Morgan Bolmer, a sophomore on the Berrien County High cross-country team, won the race in 19:40. Alden Lisse, a senior on the Highland Christian Academy team, was the first woman in the 5K, placing sixth overall in 22:51.


More high school runners followed Bolmer across the finish line. Valdosta High junior Ben Carlson was second in 20:36. Johnny Miller of Georgia Christian took third in 21:47, and Alex Carlson, a Valdosta High junior, was fourth in 22:27. There were some older athletes in the race, though. Renaldo Smidtas of Naylor, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the 5K, coming in eighth overall in 24:26.


Makayla Ross of the Highland Christian cross-country team was second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 25:52. Tifton, Georgia's Gina Purvis was the top woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 27:19.


39 athletes finished the 2017 Above The Rim 5K. Proceeds of the event went to the Highland Christian Acaemy Eagles boys' basketball team. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Katie Sherron runs 18:13 in hilly Indianhead

For four kilometers, Katie Sherron and Ani Veltcheva raced side-by-side through the streets of the Indianhead Acres neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida. Then, during the fifth and final kilometer, Sherron pulled away, winning Gulf Winds Track Club's 36th annual Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K in 18:13. A few minutes later, Charlie Johnson won the men's 5K, running 16:28.

The Women's Distance Festival is unique among Tallahassee races in that the women start in a separate wave than the men. The women's wave starts five minutes earlier. It's part of a Road Runners Club of America program that seeks to celebrate women's running with a series of races where the women are highlighted--either by having their own race, or their own starting wave. Over the years the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival has tried both approaches. Having two different starting waves for women and men is what's currently in favor.


So it was that on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017, at 8:00 AM the athletes in the women's wave of the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival set out going north on East Indianhead Drive. Before the competitors covered the first 200 meters, Katie Sherron and Ani Veltcheva had broken away from the field. Sherron, a Florida State University economics professor, had run the Women's Distance Festival before, winning the race in 2015. Veltcheva, on the other hand, was racing in Indianhead for the first time. An eighth-grader at Abraham Lincoln Middle School in Gainesville, Florida, Veltcheva had already two of Tallahassee's biggest races, the Springtime 10K and the Palace Saloon 5K. She also has an older sister at Florida State.

"My mom told me there was a course up here," Veltcheva said about the decision to race the Women's Distance Festival. "So I thought it would be a good idea to come up here and support the cause. And also visit my sister."


It quickly developed into a two-person race. Up and down the hills of Indianhead, neither Sherron nor Veltcheva gave up any ground until, with just over a kilometer to go, Sherron made a break.


"I haven't run a 5K in a long time, and the hills up here are always a surprise to me," said Veltcheva. "So around two-and-a-half miles I was feeling tired and Katie was full of fuel. She just ran away from me."

Coming off a 17:43 at the Sickle Cell 5K, the slower pace at the Women's Distance Festival must have been comfortable for Sherron. She was certainly comfortable enough to open up a lead of almost 200 meters on Veltcheva during the final kilometer. Sherron took her second Women's Distance Festival title in 18:13. Veltcheva was second in 18:54. Sheryl Rosen, winner of the race in 2006 and 2007, placed third in 19:22. Kenya Rich was the top woman master in the race, eighth in 22:07.

Unlike Sherron and Veltcheva, Charlie Johnson didn't have much company along the way while racing the Women's Distance Festival.


"I was up front almost right away," said Johnson. "I usually start off conservatively and work my way up, but today I decided to just go for it during the first mile."

Johnson went for it. No one else went with him as he led the men's field by a steadily increasing margin. It was his first time on the course.


"Jim Halley told me it was downhill the last half mile," said Johnson. "I hit an uphill at the two-mile mark, and I was hoping that was true."

It was. Johnson coasted down the final slope to win the race in 16:28, well over 200 meters ahead of the next runner and hungry for more competition.

"What's coming up next week?" asked Johnson.


Chris O'Kelley finished second in 17:17. Just behind O'Kelley, Vince Molosky passed Tristan Cravello during the final kilometer to take third in 17:21. Cravello was fourth in 17:25. Jim Halley, Johnson's adviser on course topography, was fifth in 18:06. Mickey Moore was the fastest master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 18:06.

Gibson and Smith gallop to victory at the Trot With S.W.A.T.

The annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K was back in Dothan, Alabama's Poplar Head Park on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017, and so was Myles Gibson. Running 39:39, the Donalsonville, Georgia master runner won the race for the second year in a row. Kate Smith took the women's title, placing tenth overall in 49:10.


Gibson was so far ahead of the rest of the field that he might have been getting lonely on the streets of Dothan; by the time he finished the ten-kilometer race he had a lead of nearly a kilometer and a half on the next runner. It was Gibson's third Trot With S.W.A.T. win; in addition to the 2016 race he had also won the inaugural Trot in 2007.


Eric Bernard was second in the 10K in 46:23. Master runner Bernardo Defarro was third overall in 46:33.


Tabatha Murdock edged Krystal Sheerun for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 55:03 to 55:04. Murdock and Sheerun placed nineteenth and twentieth overall. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 55:44.


58 athletes finished the eleventh annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K.

The Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K has been around since 2007, but the 5K wasn't added to the event till 2009. Master runner Dale Thomas won the shorter race for the second year in a row in 2017, running 20:13. Richie Fernandez was second in 21:25, and master runner Mark Nichols third in 22:25.


Master runner Carolyn Houston was the women's champion in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 23:37. Rebecca Jewell was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 25:14. Rachel David was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:26.


103 athletes completed the 2017 Trot With S.W.A.T. 5K.

The Wakulla boys and the Community Christian girls prevail at the Panther Invitational

Some things are worth waiting for. The second annual Panther Invitational Cross-Country Meet couldn't be held as originally scheduled because Tallahassee, Florida was in the path of Hurricane Irma, but still took place seven days later on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017. Eight high schools brought athletes to the Southwood campus of Saint John Paul II Catholic High School to resume the storm-interrupted cross-country season. Wakulla scored a perfect fifteen points to win the boys' race, while Community Christian took the girls' team title with a score of 29.


Competition opened at 8:00 AM with the high school girls' 5K. Alyssa Langston, a Wakulla junior, won the race by nearly 300 meters, running 22:31. Community Christian athletes took the next two places, with junior Madison Crews second in 23:56 and eighth-grader Katherine Bouck third in 24:21. Community Christian had two more Charger girls in the top ten, frosh Karis Desotell was sixth in 24:58 and junior Maggie Gilbert was eighth in 25:20. Frosh Rachel Christian was eighteenth in 28:22, making it five across the line for Community Christian, giving the Chargers 29 points and first in the team standings. Wakulla was second with 40 points. Led by seventh-grader Sammi Drawdy, Aucilla Christian was third with 54 points.

There were no 300-meter leads in the boys' 5K. Wakulla junior Chris Porter edged Wakulla senior Scott Lloyd for first, both runners clocked in 18::17. Wakulla sophomore Daniel Wiedeman took third in 18:53.


Wakulla didn't just take the first three places, though. The next two places also belonged to the War Eagles, with senior Caleb Wiedeman fourth in 19:02 and sophomore Mason McCord fifth in 19:09. In fact, the first nine runners were from Wakulla, as the War Eagle boys racked up 15 points, the best possible score in cross-country. Led by junior Chris Robinson (11th, 20:20), Rickards was second in the six-team field with 52 points. Frosh Matthew Steen (14th, 20:32) was the first runner for Jefferson County and senior Kyle Moran (17th, 20:45) the first for John Paull II, but when the scores were tallied each of those two teams had 104 points. But John Paul II had the faster sixth runner, senior Jose Torres (37th, 25:14), so the Panthers were awarded third and Jefferson County fourth.

Paige Churchill and Ben Kirbo get their first Everhart Invitational wins

The middle school cross-country teams of Leon County Schools gathered at Gretchen Everhart School on Thursday morning, 21 September 2017, for the 31st Everhart Invitational. In the girls' two-mile, Swift Creek seventh-grader Paige Churchill picked up her third win this season, while Ben Kirbo, a Montford eighth-grader, won the boys' two-mile race. In the team competition, the Swift Creek girls got their second win in a row and the Deerlake boys remained perfect on the season, picking up their third win in three outings.

As a sixth-grader, in 2016 Paige Churchill had won three of the four races in her first Leon County Schools cross-country season. Those victories had included the girls' County Championship race. The one event she didn't win was the girls' two-mile at the Everhart Invitational, the oldest middle school meet in Tallahassee if not in the entire state of Florida. In 2017 she was back for a second try.


The race started just after 10:30 AM. It wasn't Churchill setting the early pace for the field, though. Another seventh-grader, Deerlake's Maya Tang, was up front.

"She was pretty much leading the whole race," said Churchill. "I just tried to stay with her and kick at the end. She's a good runner."


Through the schoolyard and onto the streets around Gretchen Everhart School, Churchill trailed Tang. Finally, Churchill made her move.


"It was right before the finish coming up the hill," recalled Churchill.

That was back in the schoolyard, going up a grassy slope with 400 meters to go in the race. Churchill put some daylight between herself and Tang at the base of the hill, then widened the margin during the climb. 200 meters from the finish the course turned back downhill, and Churchill scampered home with a 13:45 win. Tang took second in 13:56. Swift Creek eighth-grader Elise Ferguson was third in 14:03, and Montford seventh-grader Livia Rose Clark placed fourth in 14:11.


Swift Creek had two more girls in the top ten--sixth-grader Ava Jones was sixth in 14:39 and seventh-grader Stella Lewis placed seventh in 14:41. Swift Creek's fifth scorer was seventh-grader Alima Hemenway, giving the team 28 points and first place out of the eight schools in the race. Deerlake placed second with 37 points and Montford was third with 75 points.

As a seventh-grader, Churchill is in her second year of middle school cross-country on the Leon County Schools circuit. Although Ben Kirbo is an eighth-grader with some cross-country experience, 2017 is his first year racing in the Leon County Schools league.

"I ran for Holy Comforter last year," explained Kirbo.


Holy Comforter Episcopal School isn't in the Leon County Schools system, but the school has one of the hilliest three-kilometer cross-country courses in town. Kirbo has done a lot of running on that course.


"Last year training on hills helped me a lot," said Kirbo. "I developed a strategy for hills, and now that's my strength."

Half a mile into the race, Kirbo was running in sixth place. At the mile mark, Deerlake seventh-grader Wyatt Townsend had the lead, with Fairview sixth-grader Patrick Koon in second and Kirbo running third. But at the mile mark the course started heading uphill, taking the runners past a water table on their way to a U-turn. Kirbo made a move going up the slope.


"Everyone was slowing down for the water table, but my coach had told me not take on any water so I gained on them," said Kirbo. "At the turnaround I moved into first. And stayed there."

Koon was still with Kirbo with half a mile to go, but over the next quarter mile Kirbo broke contact, re-entering the schoolyard in command of the race. Kirbo finished strong over the last quarter mile, racing across the finish line in a winning 11:41. It was the fastest time on the Everhart course since the 2010 race, when Wil Luca of Raa also ran 11:41. Townsend overtook Koon on the homestretch to take second in 11:55. Koon was third in 11:56, and Swift Creek seventh-grader Connor Edwards was fourth in 12:10. Deerlake eighth-grader Filippo Reina, winner of the previous week's Fort Braden Run, placed fifth in 12:11.


Townsend and Reina were joined in the top ten by Deerlake eighth-graders William Wilkerson (8th, 12:36) and Matt Reynolds (9th, 12:39). Another Deerlake eighth-grader, Grant Gallagaer, placed sixteenth in 13:07, giving Deerlake 40 points and first place out of nine teams. The 2016 champs, Swift Creek, were second with 57 points. Montford took third with 80 points.

After the Everhart Invitational, Leon County Schools middle school cross-country runners head to Montford Middle School for the fifth annual Mustang Stampede on Thursday evening, 28 September 2017. Only six days after that, on Wednesday evening, 4 October 2017, the season closes with the Leon County Schools Middle School Cross-Country Championship at Apalachee Regional Park. The championship had originally been scheduled for Thursday, 5 October 2017.

Pezent and Hall have super runs at the Superhero Dash

The Moultrie, Georgia YMCA Superhero Dash was Saturday morning, 16 September 2017. The event has a confusing history. Was it the inaugural Superhero Dash? Or was it the fifteenth annual Superhero Dash, nee Race of the South? Or would you claim the seventeen years from 1980 to 1996 when the Race of the South was held prior to its revival in 2003? The 32nd annual Superhero Dash (formerly known as the Race of the South)?


A few things are clear, though. For the fifteenth September in a row, the Moultrie YMCA hosted a 10K road race. This year they called it the Superhero Dash. And for the second year in a row, Cody Pezent won that 10K. This time around Pezent, a junior on the Cook County High cross-country team, ran 40:46, finishing the ten-kilometers more than a kilometer ahead of the next runner. Moultrie master runner Shannon Hall took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 52:53.


Moultrie's Lee McGill edged Mark Niday of Moultrie for the runner-up spot in the 10K, 46:05 to 46:10. Patrick Bius of Moultrie was the first master runner in the race, coming in fifth overall in 50:00.


Moultrie master runner Angela Pezent was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 54:32. Master runner Char Davidson of Nashville, Georgia was the third woman and ninth overall in 54:52.


Twenty athletes finished the 10K.

Like the Race of the South from 2003 to 2016, the 2017 Superhero Dash included a 5K race. Josh Bratcher of Moultrie won the shorter event in 22:29. Dexter Hopper, a frosh on the Colquitt County High cross-country team, took second in 22:39.


Master runner Pollyanna Bass was the first woman in the 5K, placing third overall in 22:50. Bass had been the fourth woman in the 10K in 2016.


Margarito Moctezuma was the top male master in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 23:56.
