Tristan Cravello and Lucy Baird respond rapidly at the Medical Response Unit 5K

Nobody was forecasting rain in Tallahassee, Florida for Sunday morning, 25 February 2018. So of course it rained that morning on the Florida State University campus during the FSU Medical Response Unit's ninth annual Run For Your Life 5K. Even so, more than 200 athletes showed up for the race, and the fastest of them was first-year FSU student Tristan Cravello, who covered the five-kilometer circuit of the campus in a winning 18:08. Another Florida State University undergraduate, Lucy Baird, won the women's title, placing fourth overall in 19:56.

The light rain started to fall at 9:00 AM, just as the race got started. Brian Prisbe, a 2016 alumnus of the Sante Fe Catholic High track team, took the early lead. Prisbe, however, couldn't escape Tristan Cravello. Cravello had raced at the Trailblazer 5K the day before, but was neverthless right behind Prisbe at 800 meters as the runners crossed Landis Green. Aaron Ostler and Scott Sigrist followed farther back. As the race progressed, Cravello overtook the fading Prisbe. Sigrist, who had already left Ostler behind, passed Prisbe to move into second. Halfway through the 5K, the rain had stopped. With a kilometer to go, Cravello was setting the pace with Sigrist in second, twelve seconds back. Sigrist didn't narrow that margin and Cravello didn't widen it as Cravello ran home to win the race in 18:08. Sigrist, a 2017 alumnus of the Lake Placid High cross-country team, was runner-up in 18:20. Prisbe took third in 19:46, and Ostler was the fourth male finisher and fifth overall in 20:16.

Lucy Baird
Lucy Baird

Cravello may have raced the day before the Medical Response Unit 5K, but Lucy Baird had run the Tallahassee Marathon three weeks earlier, placing third in the women's division in 3:32:54. Baird, a member of FSU's Seminole Striders Running Club, was recovered enough from the marathon to set the early pace for the women's field in the MRU 5K. At the one-kilometer mark she was a few steps ahead of Taylor Mogavero and 2017 Medical Response Unit 5K women's champion Lauren Aronson at the one-kilometer mark. It didn't stay that close. Baird widened her lead to more than 200 meters, then kicked on the final stretch to break twenty minutes, posting a winning time of 19:56. Mogavero slipped ahead of Aronson to take second in the women's standings and sixth overall in 20:53. Aronson was the third woman and seventh overall in 21:01.

Paula O'Neill was the first master runner in the race and the sixth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 23:42. Michael Magnuson was the first male master, placing nineteenth in the men's standings and 28th overall in 25:10.

Johnson and Sherron post record runs at the Trailblazer 5K

On Saturday morning, 24 February 2018, Charlie Johnson laid to rest a three-year-old course record at the sixth annual Trailblazer 5K, running a winning 16:45. The previous best on the hilly course around DeSoto Trail Elementary School was 16:54, posted in 2015 by Jack Redwing. Katie Sherron set a women’s course record in that same 2015 race, running 19:39. In the 2018 Trailblazer Sherron bettered that mark, winning the women’s title in 18:55.

The race started shorty after 9:30 AM, with the runners making two sharp turns--a right followed by a left--in the first fifty meters of the race. Tristan Cravello, a first-year student at Florida State University, came out of the zig-zag leading the race, but Charlie Johnson was just getting started. Johnson soon overtook Cravello and was well ahead before the end of the first mile. Meanwhile, Chris O’Kelley had Cravello in his sights.

“It was a hard lesson learned,” said Cravello. “I made the mistake of trying to stay with Charlie. The first mile was 5:10, and Chris caught me on the second mile.”

Chris O'Kelley
Chris O'Kelley

“I knew I couldn’t run with Charlie, so I was racing for second,” said O’Kelley. “I caught Tristan just past two miles.”

Johnson, unaffected by the racing going on behind him, raced home in 16:45, first across the finish line back at the school. Chris O’Kelley took second in 17:11 and Cravello third in 17:39. Paul Guyas, winner of the 2016 Trailblazer, was the first master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 19:26.

Katie Sherron

Three previous Trailblazer women’s champions were on the race’s starting line in 2018--2014 winner Debbie Peters, 2015 winner Katie Sherron, and 2017 winner Alyssa Terry. Sherron ran away from them all, leading the women’s field from the sound of the starting siren to the moment she crossed the finish line, winning the women’s title in 18:55 and placing seventh overall. Brittney Barnes held the second women’s spot early in the race, with Jillian Heddaeus following in third. As Barnes approached the midway point of the race, Heddaeus was closing in. Early in the second half, Heddaeus passed Barnes.

“I thought she was coming back,” said Heddaeus. “She always does.”

Not that morning. Heddaeus held on to second in the women’s standings, placing nineteenth overall in 20:50. Barnes held off a late charge from the defending women’s champ, Alyssa Terry, to take the third women's spot in 21:12, finishing 22nd overall. Terry was the fourth woman and 23rd overall in 21:13. Angela Dempsey was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 35th overall in 22:43.

The 2018 Trailblazer Run For Literacy was hosted by the DeSoto Trail Elementary School PTO as a fundraiser for the school's library. 240 athletes finished the 5K and another 131 completed a one-mile fun run. Both races were chip-timed by Gulf Winds Track Club.

Linenfelser and Smith were triumphant Trailblazers in Dothan

Mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun.” --Noel Coward

South Alabama doesn't have much recognizably winter weather, but things usually cool off in February. It certainly isn't like July, when going out for a run at noon just might get you in trouble with the mental health authorities. So on Saturday, 17 February 2018, it was reasonable to expect quite reasonable conditions for the 12:00 PM running of the fourth annual High Noon Trailblazer 5K. Certainly, no one expected temperatures of nearly 80 degrees when the race started.

There were temperatures of nearly 80 degrees when the race started.

Fortunately, it was also cloudy with a breeze, and the race was on the relative coolth of Dothan's Westgate Park Trail. The conditions agreed with Mike Linenfelser, who won the race in 20:28. Kate Smith, a frosh on the Dothan High cross-country team, won the women's title in 26:33, placing eleventh overall.

Kyle Bracklin was runner-up in the 5K in 21:03. Jerland Mack, a senior year cross-country runner at Dothan High, took third in 22:11. Dave Durbin was the fastest master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 23:58.

Rachel Gothard, another frosh member of the Dothan High cross-country squad, was second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 27:01. Nina Korges was the top woman master and third female finisher, thirteenth overall in 27:22.

54 athletes finished the 2018 High Noon Trailblazer 5K. The race was a fundraiser for the Dothan High track and field program.

Kevin Sweeny and Jenny Early leave Dasher with Hospice Half titles

Before 2018, Kevin Sweeny had raced the Hospice Half Marathon twice, finishing runner-up in 2013 and 2014. On Saturday morning, 17 February 2018, Sweeny made a third trip to Dasher, Georgia to race in the seventh annual Hospice Half. This time the Saint Augustine, Florida master runner won the 13.1-mile race, running 1:25:21. Jenny Early of Tallahassee, Florida was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 1:42:28.

At both of his earlier appearances at the Hospice Half Marathon, Sweeny had finished second to Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia. Kelly was in the race again in 2018, but in this rematch it was Kelly who came up second-best, taking the runner-up spot in 1:27:55. Colin Prinsloo of Hahira, Georgia was third in 1:30:15, and Valdosta, Georgia triathlete Dan Butzin took fourth in 1:35:18. Jacksonville, Florida master runner Bill Dorrian was fifth in 1:36:17.

Less than two weeks before her win in Dasher, Jenny Early had run 3:47:28 in the Tallahassee Marathon. Early had been seventh in the women's division that day, but no woman finished ahead of her at the Hospice Half. Anne Diaz of Valdosta was second in the women's standings of the Hospice Half, placing fifteenth overall in 2:02:12. Valdosta's Morgan Long (17th, 2:03:10) was the third woman finisher, just seconds ahead of Karisa Zickos (18th, 2:03:17) and Monika Miller (19th, 2:03:26), both Valdosta women. Penny Bell of Hahira, Georgia was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 25th overall in 2:15:03.

For the first time in the seven-year history of the race, the course for the Hospice Half Marathon was USATF certified (course number GA18003WC), measured by Valdosta State University cross-country coach Todd Smoot. 45 athletes finished the 2018 Hospice Half. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
