Zyrianov and Denisova make it a Gainesville repeat at the Albany Snickers® Marathon

In 2017, Gainesville, Florida athletes Sergei Zyrianov and Lyubov Denisova won the men's and women's titles at Albany, Georgia's eleventh annual Snickers® Marathon. A year later, you could re-use the 2017 headlines, because on Saturday morning, 3 March 2018, Zyrianov was the top man at the twelfth annual Snickers® Marathon, and Denisova was the first woman. Zyrianov cruised the 26.2-mile course in 2:23:48, while Denisova finished sixth overall in 2:47:10.


Zyrianov took the lead early in the race and then never relinquished it, finishing the race more than 800 meters ahead of the field. Late in the first half of the race, Columbus, Georgia athlete David Marley overtook Nathan Haskins of Marietta, Georgia, moving into second place. Marley held the runner-up spot for the rest of the race, finishing in 2:26:44. Marley had been fourth in the 2016 Snickers® Marathon. Haskins was third overall in 2:29:20.


Denisova was not only the first woman in the race, she was also the first master runner. The Gainesville athlete took control of the women's race just before the halfway point, moving ahead of Natasha Yaremczuk of Montverde, Florida. During the second half of the race the marathon belonged to Denisova, as she built up a lead of 1300 meters on her way to a 2:47:10 win. Yaremczuk was second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 2:52:39. Master runner Laura Roberts of Saint Simons Island, Georgia was the third woman and 27th overall in 2:59:03.


Ian Brown of Americus, Georgia was the first male master runner and fifteenth in the men's standings, placing seventeenth overall in 2:56:43.

The Boston Athletic Association Marathon doesn't share it's day in April with a half-marathon, nor is the New York City Marathon paired with a shorter race, but many marathons come with a half-sized sibling. The Snickers® Marathon is one. Mason Chilmonczyk won the 13.1-mile race in 2018 by more than a kilometer, running 1:14:48. Chilmonczyk ran cross-country at Ridgewood High; currently he lives in Atlanta, Georgia where he is doing graduate work in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech and competing for Team West Stride. David Dement of Atlanta was second in the half-marathon at 1:18:54. Brandon D’Arienzo, a 2017 alumnus and former cross-country runner of Blessed Trinity Catholic High in Roswell, took third in 1:19:24. Jack Westrick of Atlanta was the first master runner in the shorter race, finishing tenth overall in 1:22:13.


Amelia Shea of Charlotte, North Carolina took the half-marathon women's title, placing thirteenth overall in 1:23:29. Not far behind in 1:23:44, Maxey Hebert of McDonough, Georgia was the women's runner up and fourteenth overall. Former Georgia Bulldog distance runner Ann Centner of Blakely, Georgia was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 1:25:05. Marietta, Georgia distance runner Kelly Cameron was the first woman master and ninth female finisher, 35th overall in 1:34:55.


489 athletes finished the twelfth annual Snickers® Marathon, while another 574 complete the half marathon. Event Technical Services of Sylvester, Georgia timed the races.

Molosky and Sherron were the cocks-of-the-walk at the Shamrock

Holiday celebrations seem to be expanding. Halloween was once a single day of tricks or treats, perhaps preceded by an evening of pumpkin carving. Now it’s at least a week of parties and a frenzied month of decorating. The Twelve Days of Christmas have become more like twelve weeks from the day of the first sales displays to the day of the last post-Holiday clearance. Even Saint Patrick’s Day has started to take over the month of March. Which explains why on Saturday morning, 3 March 2018, two weeks before the actual date of Saint Patrick’s Day, the Shamrock Scurry 5K was run in Tallahassee, Florida's Killearn Estates community. Unperturbed by the calendar, 531 athletes showed up to finish the 5K, and another 164 completed a one-mile fun run. Vince Molosky was the fastest in the 5K, winning the main event in 17:22. Katie Sherron was the Shamrock Scurry 5K women’s champ for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 18:40.

It was the 30th Shamrock Scurry. The race was run each year from 1980 to 1996, starting and finishing at Killearn United Methodist Church. After a hiatus, the Scurry was revived at nearby Celebration Baptist Church from 2004 to 2008. There was no Scurry in 2009, but the race returned to Killearn Methodist in 2010, where it has been run annually since. Vince Molosky has run more than a few of the recent series of nine races.


“Maybe four or five times?” said Molosky. “I enjoy the race. It’s always a good one. It’s a tough course.”

Of the five times that Molosky ran the Scurry, his best finish in the race prior to 2018 was second place. Molosky had finished second three times--in 2012, 2014, and 2017. A gambler might say he was due.


Molosky certainly ran that way. He took the lead right after the start, and at the mile mark he was ten seconds ahead of the next runner, Michael Niezgoda. During the next hilly two miles, Molosky left the rest of the field even further behind, finally crossing the finish line back at the church in a wining 17:22. Niezgoda was second in 17:55. Tony Guillen was the fastest master runner in the race and the third male finisher, placing fourth overall in 18:40.

Just ahead of Guillen, women’s winner Katie Sherron finished in an identical 18:40.


“Tony and I ran stride for stride for about two miles,” said Sherron. “It was pretty cool.”

Before catching up to Guillen, Sherron was in the seventh position overall, leading the women’s field. Racing together, the two overtook three athletes during the middle of the race. When it was over, Sherron had a third Scurry women’s title to add to her wins from 2014 and 2017, plus a time to be pleased with.


“It was my best Shamrock time,” said Sherron.


It was also the best time by any woman at the Shamrock Scurry since the race returned to Killearn Methodist in 2010.

Sheryl Rosen, the 2011 Shamrock Scurry women's champ, took second in the women's standings and seventh overall in 19:30. Brittney Barnes was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 21:00. Corinne Porcher was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 25th overall in 22:30.


Corned beef and cabbage may be traditional Saint Patrick’s Day fare, but the Shamrock Scurry always ends with a pancake and sausage breakfast. Should the race switch to boiled beef? The athletes don’t seem to think so, because the Scurry was the largest 5K in Tallahassee so far during 2018.

Nadler burns a 15:28 and Veltcheva a 17:34 for new records at the Race The Tortoise 5K

After eight annual events from 2009 to 2016, the Race The Tortoise 5K took a year off in 2017. The Tortoise returned to Florida's O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 3 March 2018, and maybe a year of rest was what the coach ordered. Outkicking Calum McFetridge and Chris Cabret, Enoch Nadler of Team Florida Track Club won the race in 15:28, setting a new course record. Ani Veltcheva, an eighth-grader at Gainesville, Florida's Abraham Lincoln Middle School, won the women's division for the third time in the past four years, setting a women's course record of 17:34 and finishing eighth overall.


The top three athletes crossed the finish line within inches of one another, with Nadler and McFetridge both clocked in 15:28 and Cabret posting a 15:29. All three runner were more than half a minute faster than the previous course record, the 16:10 run by Vladimir Tontchinski in the 2012 Race The Tortoise. In fact, Nadler, McFetridge, and Cabret are the only athletes to break 16:00 on the O'Leno State Park course. Far behind the fireworks up front, Ravi Kumar edged Sam Luttier for fourth, 16:28 to 16:30.


The women's competition wasn't as close as the men's; Ani Veltcheva finished 70 meters ahead of the second woman. Nevertheless, Veltcheva pushed herself hard enough to trim 24 seconds off the previous Race The Tortoise women's record of 17:58, set by Lyubov Denisova in the 2015 race. The women's runner-up, Kelly Griffin, was also under the old record, placing ninth overall in 17:49. Kate Egan took third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 19:17.


Rich Joel was the first master runner in the race and the tenth male finisher, placing twelfth overall in 18:52. Victoria Pagan-Wolpert was the first woman master and twelfth female finisher, 37th overall in 23:54.


The Race The Tortoise 5K is a fundraiser for the Friends of O'Leno State Park, who use the proceeds to help provide for the creatures in the park's Nature Center and to help expand the center's exhibits. Timing for the 2018 race was provided by Milestone Race Authority of Jacksonville, Florida.

Adams and Shen shine at the Viking Glow Run 5K

In a Friday evening 5K, fourteen-year-old Sullivan Adams won the fifth annual Viking Glow Run in Valdosta, Georgia's Kinderlou Forest community on 2 March 2018, running 21:22. Eleven-year-old Fiora Shen took the women's title, placing eleventh overall in 26:17.


Michael Smith edged Mark Henderson for the runner-up spot, 22:02 to 22:05. Henderson was the first master runner in the race.


Eleven-year-old Elena Symon was second to Fiora Shen in the women's standings, finishing thirteenth overall in 26:26. Ten-year-old Olivia Shen was third in the women's division and fourteenth overall in 26:37. Kris Stites was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 26:57.


100 athletes finished the 2018 Viking Glow Run. The event was hosted as a fundraiser by the Westside Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization.
