Andrew Colley, Matt McClintock, and Joanna Thompson ZAP the field at the Matanzas 5000

ZAP Fitness is based in North Carolina, but during the winter months you're likely to see ZAP athletes training on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course or some other Tallahassee, Florida trail. But on Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, you would have seen ZAP's Andrew Colley and Matt McClintock in Saint Augustine, Florida flashing across the finish line of the 39th annual Matanzas 5K in a dead heat for first place. Another ZAP Fitness star, Joanna Thompson, was the first woman in the race, placing ninteenth overall in 17:05.

The officials gave Colley the win over McClintock, but both runners were clocked in 14:26. About thirty meters behind them, their ZAP teammate Joe Stilin took third in 14:31. Yet another ZAP runner, University of Florida alum Josh Izewski, was fourth in 14:46. Jacksonville, Florida's Kristopher Shold of the PRS Racing Team was fifth in 15:25. Apparently, you need to be a ZAP runner to break 15:00. Brian Shrout of Jacksonville was the first master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 15:50. John Sorensen, the first prep runner in the 5K, was just behind Shrout, ninth overall in 15:57. Sorensen, a senior at Fernandina Beach High, was an All-State cross-country runner in Florida during the 2018 season.

In the 2018 Matanzas, Francine Nzilampa and Lydia McRae had finished just a single second apart, taking seventh and eighth in the women's standings. They were close again in the standings of the 2019 race, with Flagstaff-based Nzilampa running 17:54 for the second women's spot and 28th overall, while Jacksonville's McRae was the third woman and 31st overall in 18:01. Amelia Williams took fourth on the women's side and 37th overall in 18:15. Laura Roberts of Saint Simons Island, Georgia was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 52nd overall in 19:15.

985 athletes finished the 2019 Matanzas 5K.

Nicholas Samuel and Kaley Ford were up to the test at the TMH Challenge

There was a lot of racing choice in Tallahassee, Florida during the weekend of Saturday, 26 January 2019. Three 5K events and one 10K event were on the calendar, each race slated to be run on a USATF-certified course. On such a busy schedule, it would have been easy to overlook the fifth annual TMH For Life Challenge 5K, but 151 athletes chose the Challenge for their Saturday morning race. The fastest of them was Nicholas Samuel. A sophomore on the Lincoln High cross-country team, Samuel edged Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach Gary Droze for the Challenge title, 18:40 to 18:45. Kaley Ford, a 2012 alumna of the Saint Andrews High cross-country team, was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:11.

It was a chilly morning and a hilly course, and Samuel had never run the Challenge before, but his 18:40 was still the third-fastest winning time in the history of the race. Droze's 18:45 made him the fastest master runner in the race. Kurt Dietrich, a Lincoln High cross-country alum, took third in 19:36, while master runner Duane Evans was fourth in 20:21.

Janie Leacock was second in the women's standings and Jamie Leacock finished just steps ahead of Jennie Merchant to take second in the women's standings, 25:02 to 25:05. Leacock and Merchant were twelfth and thirteenth overall. Fran McLean was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 26th overall in 28:46.

The TMH For Life Challenge is hosted by Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare to promote wellness in the Tallahassee community. In addition to the 5K, the event also includes a 3K walk, health screenings, and activities. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the 2019 TMH For Life Challenge.

Brad Busboom and Lisa Johnson launch the 10K at the Trent

The Trent isn’t a new event. It was first run in 2009 at Roberts Elementary School, northeast of Tallahassee, Florida. But on a chilly Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, the event got a new name and a new race. It also got a new champion when Brad Busboom won the 10K at the tenth annual Trent, covering the new 6.2-mile course in 37:37. Lisa Johnson was the first woman in the race, coming in fifth overall in 40:07.

Shortly after the 8:30 AM start at Roberts Elementary, Myles Gibson, a Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, was leading the 10K. A mile into the race Gibson was still in front as the athletes galloped through the Dublin Downs community, but three Tallahassee men were just a few steps behind him--master runner Tony Guillen, Corey Osgood, and Brad Busboom.

Myles Gisbon

Busboom didn’t stay behind. On the hilly roads of Dublin Downs he took command of the race, ultimately building up a lead of more than a hundred meters. When Busboom crossed the finish line back at the school in a winning 37:37, Gibson and Osgood were still in a fight for second. Their battle went to the final meter of the 10,000-meter race, where Osgood barely beat Gibson, both runners clocked in 38:04. A few seconds later, Guillen finished fourth in 38:19.

Corey Osgood

From first place to fourth, the top men were spread out over less than 200 meters. The women’s competition wasn’t that close; Lisa Johnson never had to look back. Leading from wire to wire, Johnson was more than a thousand meters ahead of the next woman in the 10K when she crossed the finish line in 40:07. Cecilia Bouaichi was runner-up in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 45:01. Nikky Manausa was the third woman and twelfth overall in 45:20. Sarah Samford was the first woman master and ninth female finisher, 28th overall in 51:18.

Lisa Johnson was also the first woman at the Trent in 2014, back when it was called the Red Fox Trot. Corey Osgood had been the overall winner in 2018, by which time the race was called the Trent Trot. Both of those years, as in each of the first nine editions of the race, the distance had been 5K. The 10K was added in 2019 when the event shortened its name to the Trent, but there was still a 5K race at the tenth annual Trent, run concurrently with the longer race.

Zach DeVeau

The two races were also on the same course in the early going. Zach DeVeau, the 5K leader, ran with the fastest 10K runners for the first two kilometers, with master runner Michael Martinez following closely. DeVeau broke contact with Martinez during the second half of the race, going on to win the 5K in 18:25. Martinez took second in 19:01. Jackson Rowe, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at nearly Montford Middle School, placed third in 19:50.

Kate Chunka

Austin Whitelaw and Lourena Maxwell were the new champions on Old Centerville at the GWTC 30K

North of Tallahassee, Florida, Old Centerville Road is, well, old. Old Centerville and its mate, Sunny Hill Road, have been around since at least as early as the 1800s, connecting small farming communities with one another and with their markets in Tallahassee and in Thomasville, Georgia. Still unpaved, the roads haven't changed much since the introduction of the automobile more than a century ago. The land may have nurtured cotton at one time but it's home to game birds and timber now, the sole products of game plantations like Horseshoe, Cherokee, and Foshalee that line the way. Cotton wagons are gone and logging trucks are rare. You're more likely to see a school bus, a car headed to one of the remote country churches, or someone taking the road less traveled between Florida and Georgia.

Old Centerville Road

On Saturday morning, 19 January 2019, though, you would have seen some 250 athletes out for a run. They were competing in either the 42nd annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K or its junior partner, a 15K. Austin Whitelaw was the fastest in the long race, covering 18.6 hilly miles in 1:46:53. Master runner Lourena Maxwell was the first woman in the 30K, placing eleventh overall in 2:33:55.

The races started at 8:00 AM from the Retreat at Bradley Pond, near a spot labeled on the map as Moccasin Gap. Austin Whitelaw, an intern with Florida State University's Athletic Academic Support program, hit the first mile in 5:27, already nearly 200 meters ahead of everyone else. Whitelaw's pace eased along the way, but he continued to leave the field behind, finishing 30 kilometers in 1:46:53 while the other runners were still making their way to the 28-kilometer mark. Charlie Johnson, a Tallahassee triathlete and two-time winner of the 30K, took second in 1:55:18. The top master runner in the race was Tony Guillen of Tallahassee, third overall in 2:09:36. Another Tallahassee master runner, Hong-Guo Yu, placed fourth in 2:13:08.

While the men had been widely separated, the lead women were much closer. When Lourena Maxwell crossed the finish line back at Bradley Pond, her 2:33:55 put her just 150 meters ahead of the women's runner-up, Nikky Manausa. Manausa was twelfth overall in 2:34:41. Tallahassee master runner Tsige Tadesse was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 2:39:31. Darcy Brinkman of Tallahassee placed fourth on the women's side and seventeenth overall in 2:40:35.

It was a bit faster than the usual training run, though, as they hit the first mile in 6:05 as a group with only Austin Whitelaw ahead of them. The group started to fall apart a mile later, and Leon frosh Jackson Yarbrough went on to win the 9.3-mile race in 56:27. Jackson Roberts, a Leon High junior, was second in 56:42, close enough to see Yarbrough finish. Chris O'Kelley of Tallahassee took third in 57:02, while Leon junior Joseph Ashebo was fourth in 57:48.

The Leon athletes were familiar with Old Centerville Road and its hills, but Ann Centner was seeing it for the first time.

"I never ran out on Old Centerville Road and Sunny Hill Road," stated Centner, a doctoral studen at Florida State University. "Back in college at the University of Georgia we used to drive out twenty minutes and run a paved road that turned to packed clay and gravel with rolling hills. But that's been a while! I liked the course today, though, I will probably go out and run it again to get in a long run."

What wasn't to like? Centner won the women's competition by about a mile, finishing fifth overall in 60:09. Alyssa Terry of Tallahassee was the women's runner-up, placing fourteenth overall in 66:52. Tallahassee schoolteacher Laura McDermott was third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 69:09. Leon High sophomore Lilli Unger was the fourth woman and 23rd overall with a 70:38.

Don Autore of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the race and the seventh male finisher, eighth overall in 62:12. Dana Black of Port Saint Joe, Florida was the first woman master and fifth in the women's standings, 28th overall in 71:43.

59 athletes finished the 2019 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, with another 191 completing the 15K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races.
